Hi Josh, Im a second year graphic design student at UWE Bristol; you gave a talk to us in our first semester and since then I've followed your work and loved it. I was wondering if there's any advice you'd give on getting started with hand rendered type; it's my weakest area and it's become so popular I feel I need to learn some basics in order to keep up with the competition. Is there any advice you'd give or books you'd recommend as a starting point? Keep up the awesome work Regards Paul
Hi Paul, Cheers for the message buddy. Apologies for such a late reply. Feels like a lifetime ago I did that talk. Real good to hear you’re building up your hand lettering skills. Think it’s definitely something that’s become more & more popular. I’d say it’s important as a base anyway, just in terms of good practice in graphic design. Working with different styles, knowing what typefaces pair well... There's lots of good sources online for courses & lettering tutorials. Some beautiful work & great examples of process from Jon Contino, TYRSA, Jen Mussari, Tom Lane, Ged Palmer, Sean McCabe... Endless list. I wouldn’t worry too much about what others are doing though, just pick up some good books on letterforms, get some good pencils & gridded paper, then practice everyday.Hope that helps my man. Good luck with your lettering. JJS.
I think I'm in love with you.
