Was she here with the girls? How had she found him? He thought back to running into Nell and hoped that she hadn’t told Zoe. This wasn’t how it was supposed to happen. The next time Josh wanted to see Zoe was when he figured out everything. He had a ride due next month; he wanted to be the best.

‘I–’ he didn’t know what to say. There was nothing he could say without him looking like the bad guy. ‘I needed to sort my head out!’ He finally said, eyes on the floor not looking at Zoe like a child behind told off by his mother.

'We had that fight and I was so pissed off, I just… I just found myself here! And the longer I left it, the worse I knew it would be to come home so I just… I’m just tryin’ to figure shit out!’

Zoe still couldn’t really believe they were having this kind of conversation. There had been quite a few arguments lately, you couldn’t deny that. But they were both adults after all, you didn’t just leave without saying anything. “Sort you head out?!”, she repeated, looking at him in disbelief. “When you wanna sort your head out, you go for a walk or get drunk or whatever! You don’t drive a thousand miles across the country and rent a fucking apartment!”, the brunette went on, somehow feeling like she was talking to her kids instead of her husband. “And without even saying a word. Or some stupid note! What were the girls supposed to think, hm..?! Did you even think about them for just one second or just about your egoistic self like always lately…?”

'What was I supposed to do?' Josh argued back. 'You're out here tryna tell me to stop ridin', stop doin' somethin' I been doin' all my life. What else am I meant to do, Zoe? I ain't smart like you!'

Josh knew he should've done something sooner, for the girls more than anything, but he just didn't want to face up to the truth. And sleeping with Hollis had made things worse for him. Now Josh definitely knew he wasn't straight. Was he even attracted to women?

'I can't have this fight with you again, Zoe, I can't.' He stepped back from the door, hoping she would come inside so the whole of Oasis Apartments wouldn't hear them yelling at each other.

Josh had heard that there was a woman who had moved into the apartment building but he hadn’t heard anything about who she was. He’d just got back from the gym and was about to head to the shower when there was a knock at his door. He frowned; he didn’t know that many people. Maybe it was Hollis. The two lived in the same building and had made up from their old fall out.

When he opened the door, he didn’t expect to see his wife standing there.

His mouth fell open and his eyes widened, stomach dropping to the floor and his heart pounding in his chest. ‘Zo–’ he started. Shit. What did he even say?

‘H-hi… What… What are you doing here?’ He asked with a frown.

Obviously Josh hadn’t expected to see her over here but when he asked what she was doing here, the brunette thought she hadn’t heard right. “What I am doing here??!!”, she hissed with her eyebrows raised, “Estás bromeando??!!” He had been the one who had left just like that without telling anyone, so what had he expected her to do..?! Just sit around doing nothing? “What the hell are you doing here Josh?!”, she countered, clearly getting more angry now, “I sat there, trying to explain to our girls, just in case you forgot about them, why there dad wasn’t home anymore, all while trying to not mess up my exams. Just to find out that apparently my husband had moved across the fucking country! So what do you think I am doing here?!”

She knew what she should tell him: that his wife and daughters missed him terribly; that they probably thought he was dead. Instead, she was mostly happy to see a familiar face thousands of miles away from home. The happiness subsided almost as quickly as it appeared when she remembered her other friend back in Texas. “Are you serious? What are you even doing here? You can’t just run away from home. Did you forget the part where you have a family? I mean, I get wanting to get away because life sucks sometimes, but couldn’t you have just — I don’t know, booked a cruise or whatever it is men do on the weekends to get away from their wives and kids? Like…golf?” Nell took a deep breath and ran her fingers through her dark hair. The last thing she wanted to do was create a scene. “I have to text her,” she said as she began to dig through her purse looking for her cell phone.

Josh sighed, knowing that the lecture would be coming from Nell. It was why he hadn’t told anybody he’d met in Silverlake what he had walked out on. He hadn’t done it to be nasty or mean; he’d done it because... he just needed some time. Some time to get his head straight, to figure things out. It was hard to decide on your sexuality when you’re married to a woman in the middle of nowhere, Texas. 

‘No-- no, don’t. Please.’ Josh could’ve jumped over the bar to grab the damn phone from her hand. ‘Please Nell, don’t tell her. I just... I just need time, y’know? I’ll tell her just-- not yet.’

Even though she had managed to find out Joshs address before she had even moved to SIlver Lake and had already been here for about three weeks now, Zoe still hadn’t found the courage to actually face him yet. But that’s what she was here for after all and the girls kept asking about their dad, so she knew it had to be done. When the brunette walked over to where his apartment had to be and spotted the familiar truck in front of it, she felt her anger well up once again. Stopping to take another deep breath, she pressed her lips together as she walked over towards the door and rang the bell. And when she finally looked into the face of the guy she had fallen madly in love all those years ago, she only managed to stare at him with a mix of anger, disbelief and sadness. “Josh!”, was all she managed to get out, still hoping for an explanation even though she already knew none would be good enough for leaving his children behind without saying anything.

So… Hollis…. wasn’t particularly happy when he left Holden’s place. But at least this was better than the absolute ire that burned in his chest when he had first read the text messages.

God bless Holden Alexander. Otherwise Hollis would have bounded to Oasis the minute he figured out what was going on – High and a little drunk and upset. Maybe this was fair. Karma. A way to get back at him for breaking off their friendship all those years ago.

Or was it some sort of sign that he had made the right choice? At this point Hollis wasn’t sure.

So he waited, coming down at his friend’s, taking a minute in his own apartment, then making his way to Josh’s. He didn’t even know what time it was. Late. It was too late for this bullshit. He knocked, fingers balled into a tight fist as his knuckles found contact with the door.

“I just got the most interesting text message tonight. You wanna guess what about?”

Josh was enjoying his night off work; he’d had a shower, got into some comfortable clothes and ordered a pizza. He’d finished it off with no hesitations and drank his way through 3 beers when he heard a knock at the door. Things had been all over the place for him for a long time now; not being at home, moving so far away, being away from his girls and then running into Hollis... and everything that happened after. 

Getting up from the couch, Josh walked over to the door and opened it. He grinned when he saw Hollis. He was so glad they’d made up with each other.

‘Hey!’ He said cheerfully. Josh was about to invite Hollis in for a drink when the other man spoke and his stomach fell. ‘What...?’ He asked. What was Hollis talking about. ‘A text about what?’

‘Shit,’ he laughed, one arm behind his head and looking to the side at his friend… his best friend who he had lost once and now they were… whatever this was.

‘I forgive you.’ How could he not, after that? Josh trailed his fingers over his chest, scratching at a scar. 'It’s fine. In the past, y'know?’ Did he need to apologise too? For what? For waiting too long for this?

'I missed you, man.’ And something clicked in his head, and he sat up and leaning on his elbows. 'You wanna come see me ride again? I’m ridin’ 4th of July.’ He loved Hollis out in the crowd, seeing him and his family after he’d made the eight seconds.

What did they do now? Did they stay intimate? Did Josh get to touch Hollis now the ways he’d wanted to when they were younger? Josh simply leaned over, kissed Hollis’ cheek and stood up.

'Better go to the bathroom - which way is it?’ Josh had to get cleaned up.

No. Josh definitely didn’t need to apologize. Hollis had been the one who harbored all this… bitterness after all these years. Of course, they would need to work through it. It wasn’t like sex was the cure-all for broken relationships.

Time, however, helped. And now, that they were both adults, and everything was out in the open, Hollis felt confidently that they could work through this. Get back where they were – stronger than where they were.

“I mean it. You didn’t deserve that. We have a lot of lost time to make up.” Hollis murmured, sitting up with a soft groan, and reaching over Josh to re-hook himself up to all his equipment. A small laugh, “I figured you were here for riding.” Before turning to look at Josh properly, “As long as you don’t get hurt. Maybe I’ll see what I can do.” he smiled at the kiss, running his fingers through his hair and getting up himself to search for boxers. It was all innocent enough, nothing felt awkward or uncomfortable. It was just… Josh. His Josh. His person. Whatever that meant. “It’s the first door on the right, there. Lemme get you a towel.”

'If that makin' up includes more of what we just did.... then I'm down.' Josh laughed, watching as Hollis got himself sorted. He hated that his best friend had to go through so much and had to deal with a lot. For all of Josh's injuries, he was grateful he was (for the most part) okay.

'Yeah-- I'm not just here for ridin' but I'm tryna get back into it after I got hurt last year.' He didn't want to go into it... if Hollis found out he would freak out. 'Don't panic I'm fine now. Just some broken bones but nothin' I couldn't handle.'

He smiled, and headed towards the bathroom once he had a towel. This whole situation was completely bizarre and to make matters worse, Hollis didn't know that Josh was still with Joanna. He didn't know he had twin daughters. There was a lot he didn't know and Josh felt like he should tell him but he also didn't want to ruin this moment between them.

It didn't take long for him to clean up, heading back into Hollis' bedroom, towel wrapped around his waist.

Nell had only been to Los Globos a handful of times. The booming bass of a song she had only heard as a child made her feel like she had been transported back to the 90s, and on the crowded dance floor, she easily lost track of her friends. A night out was just what Nell needed, but more than anything she needed a drink. She cast a glance down the bar, where the bartender had been serving someone else when she noticed his eyes. She could recognize those blue eyes from just about anywhere. It was one of the last people she ever expected to see in Silver Lake, let alone a club like this. “Josh?!” Her mouth fell open as she struggled to think of the right words. “What — What are you doing here? Does Joanna know?”

The day had been going like any other since Josh had arrived at Silverlake (minus the occurrence with Hollis, of course) until he heard a familiar voice, and immediately he wanted the ground to swallow him up. Luckily the bar wasn’t all that busy, but just enough that he’d served five people in a row before he heard Nell’s voice.

With wide eyes, Josh stared at his old friend for a long moment, hiding his left hand which was missing his wedding ring. The ring was tucked in a drawer in his apartment. ‘Nell-- I...’ Luckily, there were other bartenders working that could serve other customers. ‘No, I--...’ Josh sighed. ‘She doesn’t know I’m here.’

‘Yeah man, guys have gotta be tough all the time. Not show emotion and shit, y’know?’ Josh nodded. He was glad that Holden and him were on the same page. It was nice to have friends in LA. He laughed and shook his head at his friend and watched as he threw his first dart. 

‘Yeah, real bulls.’ He nodded. ‘She wanted me to stop. I got hurt and… she was sayin’ for the kids I gotta stop but I gotta feed my girls y’know? I’m not smart, I never finished high school. It’s all I know how to do.’ 

Josh shrugged, drinking some more of his beer. ‘So what are you gonna do with Athena, man? And your ex?’

Holden took a swig of his beer, trying to take it easy as he felt the wave of drunkenness wash over him. He hadn’t really intended on getting this shit-faced, but with how fast he was slamming those whiskeys, it was guaranteed to happen pretty fast. He didn’t think about the hangover he would have in the morning. 

“Yeah,” he nodded, eyes glossing over as he thought about his current situation. “I think that’s bullshit though, you know? Guys have feelings, too.”

“I couldn’t do that, man, I’d fall and hit my head or something,” he mused, imagining Josh riding a bull. “So were you good? D’you like riding bulls?” he asked, his words slurring together. “Wife shouldn’t have had a problem with it, I mean, I’m not trying to tell people how they should feel, I guess I”d have a problem with it if Ophelia did something like that but we’d talk about it at least…but if it was important to you…” he just trailed off. He laughed non-humorously and made a “pfft” sound. “Don’t say that. Of course you’re smart,” Holden insisted. “Real world smarts is a thing too. They don’t teach you that in a lot of high schools.” He shrugged. He’d gone to college, gotten two years training to become a paramedic, and had always done pretty good in school. “So many writers… they didn’t even finish school.” 

He shrugged. “Ophelia and I’ll get over it, I guess… We usually do. Then we’ll fight over somethin’ else. I just don’t think she’s gonna even try to compromise with me on this issue, and I don’t know why.” He shrugged a bit, his face turned into a small frown as he threw a dart, managing to hit somewhere close to the center that time. “This is kind of therapeutic,” he mused. “Man, I like Athena so much…” he slurred, upper half slightly falling over against the bar as his arms went up on the bar to catch himself as he stumbled off the seat. “Fuck, ow,” he groaned, bumping his arm on something.

Josh laughed and rubbed the back of his head. He had so many scars all over his body from injuries.

'Yeah that happens to all of us ya know,' Josh said. 'Fractured my C2 last time. Had some pretty bad head injuries, can't remember most of 2016 either.' He admitted. 'Any time a rider gets in the chute he could die. Just somethin' you gotta accept. But I was pretty good. Was in the top 10 in the world, was in championship finals in Vegas last year then I got bucked off so bad... landed on my neck. Bull got me bad.'

Josh explained it all as if it wasn't a traumatic experience, because to him it was just part of the job. He drank his beer, watching as Holden threw another dart.

'Tryna come back, though. I'm ridin' 4th of July at an event if you wanna come and watch.' It would be nice to have some people there who supported him. 'Think y'can watch my other rides on youtube too.'

He left the comments about being smart; Josh knew he wasn't the most stupid person in the world but he wasn't far off it.

'Wait until she meets a guy. Then she'll understand. Whoa--' Josh stepped closer to Holden to try and hold him up. 'You alright there, bud?' He laughed. 'You need some water or somethin'?'

If there was ever a doubt in Josh's mind about his sexuality before this, it had disappeared now. This felt.... better than anything he could've imagined, and the fact that he was experiencing this with Hollis was making things incredible.

As much as Josh wanted to respond to the praises being whispered in his ear, he couldn't say anything. The only thing leaving his mouth were pants and moans, whimpers and whines.

With every thrust of Hollis' hips, he hit the sweetest spot inside Josh that he never wanted to stop. That, combined with the hand now wrapped around his length, and Hollis asking him to come... well, he had to oblige.

Josh was on his back, legs open, as he looked up at Hollis with complete trust in his eyes. This was taking their friendship to a completely new level and he was completely comfortable with that. He kissed Hollis back hard, his hand on the back of the man's neck to keep him close, gripping tightly as Hollis pushed into him.

Josh shuddered a breath and let out a moan of pain and pleasure. 'Shit you're big,' he laughed against Hollis' lips. It took a moment of Hollis moving his hips, sliding in and out, for Josh to relax properly. When he did, his legs were wrapped around Hollis, keeping him as close as possible. Josh wanted that contact, skin against skin, as they moved together. There were many things that Josh wanted to say right now -- I'm sorry, I wish we had reconnected sooner.... but he didn't, he stayed wrapped up in the moment and wrapped up with his best friend.
