hey, hey! it’s jay (they/them, 20+) here with jo chanwoo, a third year student in broadcasting & entertainment but you might know him better as the disc jockey behind the downfall of whl 89.4′s reputation 👀 i’ll elaborate more below the cut, where you can also find more information about him. if you’d like to plot, like this post and i’ll drop you a message. i’m also available on discord if you prefer it there!

STATISTICS / BIOGRAPHY

001. BACKGROUND

he was brought up by what you’d call “cool parents”, very open-minded and chill people, never believed in grounding or hitting him and were practically like his best friends growing up (but they also fought a lot because boy, do they have fiery personalities)

it probably has to do with the fact that they were teenage parents, fooled around and got pregnant with him at the age of eighteen and went against their parents to keep the baby, even if they had no clue what they were doing (could’ve been terrible, two kids taking care of another kid but it worked out... pretty much)

his parents never went to college but they hustled enough to bring him up without much support from their parents; his relationship with his grandparents are pretty rocky and his parents prefer to keep a distance since they never really approved of their life choices

he was born and bred in seoul, never moved anywhere else, practically lived in this safe little bubble all his life which is why he can be pretty ignorant about things outside of this bubble

his family was never well-off, but they make enough to get by, which is enough for them (explains why he’s the under-achiever that he is, definitely got it from his parents lol)

fast forward to present day, they’re doing better than before now that his parents had opened a bar near hansung university, which is pretty popular with the students

002. HANSUNG

it was a no-brainer that he would end up in hansung since he clearly did not do well enough for the prestigious universities to consider him (not that it ever bothered him since his main priority was to have fun in college and hansung did look like a lot of fun)

naturally gravitated to the communications programs and eventually picked broadcast & entertainment because, well, it looked like a lot of fun too 

he also joined whl 89.4 because he figures it’s something he’ll be good at—and he is good at it, until he made a little mistake last year

he was one of the disc jockeys behind the saga that led to whl 89.4′s downfall; he was doing a pretty good job until a particular advice/comfort segment where he had made fun of someone who called in to share their problem (i did ask the admin if it’s ok for me to make this canon and they gave me the green light!)

naturally, they received backlash for that and the radio station’s reputation went downhill from there

to make up for his mistake and avoid getting kicked off the club, he took on the role of the publicity officer, vowing to turn things around and fix the mess he made (this took his peers by surprise because if you know chanwoo, you’d know that he struggles with commitment and responsibilities lol)

and this is where he is right now, hopefully on his road to redemption!

p.s. he’s also in soccer, which he plays for fun, and is 1/6 of the tenants at the blue house

003. PERSONALITY

troublemaker and class clown in a nutshell

extremely talkative, can either make you laugh a lot or piss you off real bad

frivolous and lackadaisical, pretty much just wants to have fun and knows how to fun

a free bird that fears getting tied down because he’s always been allowed to spread his wings and do whatever he deems fit

also speaks his mind and could come across as a little too straightforward

but really, he’s harmless, kind of like a puppy that yaps a lot but never bites

playful and mischievous, with a little bit of childlike innocence to him, but that could also come off as immature and flippant (which are all true)

definitely makes a strong first impression but that might deter people from wanting to get to know him better as it seems like what he had already shown is all there is to him

likes flirting but is pretty bad at it, he’ll act like he’s still in middle school and tease you 24/7 if he has a big fat crush on you, that or he’ll accidentally blurt out that he kinda wanna kiss you

actually does really well with kids but that might just have to do with the fact that he’s just like a kid himself

004. WANTED CONNECTIONS

for starters, party people, perhaps fellow tenants at the blue house who are also keen on throwing secret parties?

likewise, other tenants who do not like breaking the rules and are fairly different from him

the other disc jockey involved in the whl 89.4 saga, someone he has amazing on-air (and off-air?) chemistry with and could’ve brought the radio station to greater heights together if not for their little fuck-up (does not have to be a present member of whl 89.4, could’ve left after what happened)

members of whl 89.4 when the saga happened, could’ve either blamed him for what happened and want him out of the club or could be working together with him to save the station

and of course, the caller he had made fun of (definitely needs more plotting but i think this would be really fun to flesh out)

crushes, flings, exes, whatever, come roast his flirt game if you must

would also be down for a more than friends, less than lovers plot

people who frequent his parents’ bar near the university (p.s. they’re also hiring servers and bartenders lol)

contrary to popular belief, chanwoo did not ask for many things growing up. there was just this one thing he’s always wanted, but it was something his parents were adamant he could not have, not only because they couldn’t afford it, but also because it was realistically impossible—how on earth were they supposed to give him an older brother?

as he got older (and developed whatever semblance of common sense he has), it dawned on him that this was something he probably wouldn’t have the luxury of experiencing. no one told him that family isn’t only who you share dna with, but also who you feel at home with. was it a coincidence he first met jaehyun at the place he would call home for the next four years?

they clicked right off the bat, kind of like how kids would get along right away. it was fascinating, to meet someone that fits the mould of what he had envisioned for the older brother he had always wanted; someone he could play soccer with, someone who would understand the inner workings of his mind because they worked the same way, and someone he could look up to because he wants to be just like them. to say the least, he had found an older brother in jaehyun.

the older brother he had always wanted, but even better, because in their home away from home, there is no parental supervision, no one to tell them they could not throw the craziest parties hansung has ever seen, or fill the refrigerator with cheap convenience store beer, and leave overnight pizza littered around beer pong cups that were knocked off the table—the usual aftermath of a party at the blue house (unless you count haksu, who is essentially like a stand-in parent). 

tonight is no different, just maybe a little special, since it is the first party after the soccer team’s annual recruitment, something he knows jaehyun takes very seriously (if not the thing jaehyun takes seriously). it’s a yearly tradition, for the team to celebrate the new additions and orientate them into the way things work around here. thankfully, jaehyun and chanwoo can agree on the best way to celebrate and build bonds—the reeking stench of alcohol in the blue house says everything.

chanwoo downs the can of beer in his hand, crushes it and tosses it towards the trash bag, unsurprisingly missing by a mile. he grabs another two more cans and hurls the other in jaehyun’s direction. “don’t tell me you’ve already had enough, it’s only your fifth can.” he gibes teasingly, knowing fully well that jaehyun was nowhere near his limit. “there’s still soju in the kitchen, but we should probably save that for after the highlight of the night.”

there were probably a few invisible flames on her head as she stormed off the diamond and into the locker room. grabbing her training bag, she slammed her locker shut before dialing a familiar number, making her way towards the main campus. 

“hey? you on campus? i’m in the mood to kick something.” not literally. well, yes, sort of literally, but she’s certain chanwoo knows what she’s talking about anyway. this wouldn’t be the first time she’s rung him up during times like this.

there are not a lot of things chanwoo’s good at (besides soccer and dj-ing for the school’s radio station but even that he managed to fuck up), but if there’s one thing he knows he’s good at, without even a sliver of doubt, it would be knowing how to have fun. it’s probably why hyerim has him on speed dial whenever shit happens and she needs to let off some steam (before she punches somebody in the face and they both know they can’t have that happening—that girl’s got a temper, one only chanwoo can handle). 

and frankly, chanwoo would have it no other way. sure, he likes to tell hyerim that she can be a little psycho, but it’s why she makes for a good partner when it comes to stress-relief activities, because watching her go at it is just about as cathartic as bruce lee-ing the shit out of a punching bag. while he knows that he’d never fully understand how it feels like to be in her shoes—facing the possibility of losing the one thing she lives and breathes, the reality of a world without the thing that makes her special (or so she believes)—he can only imagine, and he knows, she needs him in moments like this.

which is why she’s never had to ring him a second time, it’s just as he tells her—he’s only one call away. this time is no different, he picks up the call on the third ring, an attempt at a cheery greeting to extinguish some flames before he meets her. “hey! what’s up?” he asks, already packing up because he knows where they’d be headed to. “as long as i’m not the one getting kicked, you know i’m here if you need me.” he, of all people, would know that it’s no fun getting kicked by her. (there’s a reason why she’s a baseball player.) “i’ll meet you at the entrance. try not to kick anyone on your way out, kay?”

see, the problem is that not everyone has a sense of humor and he could blame it on the other party as much as he wants, but he knows that korea’s different from europe. the sidecast glances, exaggerated stories & shameless proclamations of ‘no, it’s true, he can vouch for me’ don’t fly over as easily here as they did there. lesson learned.

“if you had to guess, what do you think made ‘em give up on us like that?” he wonders, still grinning in that cheeky way of his as he redirects his attention to chanwoo. 

chanwoo and sverre do a lot of things together. they’re glued to the hip (not literally, sverre’s too tall for his own good) and practically operate on the same wavelength. if you spot sverre’s big head sticking out of the crowd, chances are, you’d probably find his good buddy chanwoo right by his side. it’s an odd pairing, but at this point, nothing feels weirder than not having the other by their side. it’s like wearing sneakers without socks, you can still go about your day just fine but why would you live like that?

they do everything together, but if there’s one thing they should probably (definitely) think twice about, it would be going on blind dates together. the likelihood of one of them succeeding alone is already debatable, much less both of them together, as in, twice the chaos and twice the bad jokes? hell, they’d be single for life at this rate. (picture this: lonely bachelors sverre and chanwoo rooming together in what appears to be their messy, dysfunctional bachelor pad? scary how believable this imagery seems already.)

fact is, neither of them are particularly talented in dating. they’re not ugly people (at least, that’s what they like to tell each other), but they can be a bit... facetious? childish? weird? put two of them together, well, there goes whatever’s left of their chances—right out the window. today’s date is probably no different and it’s about time they started realising that.

“i think we nailed it.” chanwoo declares, half-joking. “i mean, i thought you were pretty funny back there.” he says it like it’s a compliment, and it is, chanwoo thinks sverre’s hilarious—but that’s usually the problem. “they might just be playing hard to get, y’know, acting uninterested when they’re probably gushing over us right now.” he adds with a hint of playful sarcasm, shit-eating grin saying it all. “i bet they’ll ask for another date soon.” no, they really wouldn’t, but who’s going to tell them that?

for the most part, chanwoo hates the start of a new semester. it brings his short-lived freedom to an end and signifies the start of another gruelling semester. this means having to fix his body clock (morning classes are the bane of his existence) and god forbid, pick up a pen again. while most of it sucks, there’s one part he actually looks forward to, that is, meeting new people. with the start of every semester comes new students, which only means one thing—new friends! (even better if they happen to be your new housemate.)

if not for his jam-packed schedule the past couple of days, he would’ve made sure to give the new tenant a big welcome, chanwoo-style. (that usually involves some drinks and overt extroversion that might come off a tad bit overwhelming but it always earns him a new friend by the end of the night so, whatever works, right?) good thing a party is held at the blue house tonight, there is no better time and place for him to work his charms on his soon-to-be new friend. he hasn’t had the time to extend a formal invitation to him—heck, they still haven’t had a proper meeting (chanwoo dashing out of the sharehouse yelling “ohmygodsorryi’mlateforclassbutit’snicetomeetyou!” does not count), so the next best thing he could resort to was leaving a post-it note on his door, messy handwriting scribbled across: we’re having a party tonight, please come! ☺

as alcohol-starved college students began streaming into the blue house, chanwoo started looking around for his new housemate. he wasn’t sure if he had gotten his note, at least, not until he catches sight of who he assumes is the boy he was looking for—an unfamiliar familiar face (the kind you’d remember glancing at while you’re running off to class). it doesn’t go unnoticed how he was lingering uncertainly by the side, much like a fish out of water, foreign to this jungle-like environment. chanwoo takes this as his cue and wasted no time in sashaying up to him, a freshly poured cup of beer in one hand. “you made it!” he hollers above the music, handing him the plastic cup. “i take it that you saw my note? we haven’t had a proper meeting so i was really hoping to see you down here!” 

NEW BLOOD ft. @orosii

chanwoo does not take no for an answer. it doesn’t help that haksu is really bad at saying no too—it’s pretty much why they ended up drowning in all these clothing (figuratively speaking, thank god) at a street fashion store in hongdae, the kind of store you probably wouldn’t find haksu anywhere near, if not for chanwoo insisting they had to go shopping for “back-to-school supplies”.

to be fair, clothes are an essential (whatever haksu retorts with, chanwoo would simply argue back, “what? are we supposed to turn up to school butt naked?”), and haksu could really do with a new wardrobe this year. chanwoo always tells him, “i swear, if you just let me take you shopping, you’d have a looong line of suitors by the end of the semester.” whether or not haksu believes him, or even cares for a “looong line of suitors”, chanwoo decided it was time he took matters into his own hands. (he’ll thank him later.)

ignoring the visibly annoyed sales assistant eyeing them from behind the cash register, chanwoo continues piling pieces of clothing into the baskets before them. pile one reads, ‘no way in hell am i wearing that’, or at least, that’s what chanwoo inferred from the look of horror on haksu’s face when he whipped those bad boys out from the rack. pile two is a ‘maybe’, could be a ‘yes’ if he does a good job at persuading haksu, which is the number one agenda on his list today. it would’ve been nice to have a third pile, as in, one that reads, ‘oh my god, YES! chanwoo, you are a fashion god!’ but knowing haksu, chanwoo’s lucky he even got a ‘maybe’ pile. 

before haksu can slip away and start returning the pieces from the rejects basket, chanwoo lugs the basket of ‘maybes’ towards him (and stealthily slips in a sweater haksu had already said no to because he refuses to give up on it). “we can worry about those later,” he gestures towards the basket of rejects (poor boys, they were clearly ahead of their time, correction: haksu’s time), “but first, let’s get you into these.” he grins impishly as he hands haksu a pair of wide-legged distressed jeans and a jacket sitting atop the ‘maybe’ pile, shoving him towards the fitting room.
