Hey there, folks! :)
Today we’ll get a little bit offline, to talk about this great, awesome card game.
Women in Science.
This cute, educational card game teaches about great women in science.
It is really easy to play, as the IndieGogo campaign explains:
“ Each player receives 6 cards, the deck is put at the center of the table and the first card is removed to start the discard pile. The goal is to collect 4 cards of the same color to form a « lab ». The first player who forms 3 labs wins. At the beginning of a turn, the player chooses to take a card from the deck or to take the first card of the discard pile. At the end of the turn, he can only keep 6 cards in his hand, the rest has to be discarded. To spice up things, some cards have more than one color, and special cards permit to take any scientist from the discard pile, steal 2 scientists from an opponent's lab (the lab is destroyed and the remains return in the opponent's hand) or make an exact copy of a scientist. “
It’s a really cool initiative, showing the kids different kinds of role models (scientists, mathematicians, biologists, etc).
And the folks behind it are so cool that they’re going to donate 100 packs of the game to charity (as a reward of getting R$ 6000,00 on the campaign).

The game looks pretty nice! Can’t wait to evolve into a giant creepy tentacle evil creature! :)

JOF Interview - Perturbia
Hey there, folks!
Another horror game here in Joysticks on Fire!
Today we’ll talk with Gonzalo Cuevas, the lead programmer from Perturbia, an indie horror puzzle-driven and focused on the story.
Check it out!
JOF: So let’s start! Tell us who you are and what's your role in Perturbia.
Gonzalo Cuevas: Hi,my name is Gonzalo and I'm Perturbia's lead programmer and game designer, along with Pablo who is also in charge of graphic design and the atmosphere and aesthetics of the game. The team is completed with three more people: Marcelo, 3d artist, Leandro, concept artist and Lucas, music composer.
JOF: Tellus what Perturbia is about.
GC: Perturbia is an old school, puzzle driven, psychological horror game. It's about all that. A game that remind us, old school gamers, of those games where getting to the next level was not an easy task, sometimes hard as hell. But it was rewarding to get there, and that feeling encouraged you to keep going, even when you were suffering! It has some Lovecraftian elements, as well as Masonic references that will help the player to get in the mood.
JOF: Perturbia will be centered on the story, right? What's the impact of it on the gameplay?
GC: Perturbia has two main focuses: the story, and the puzzle solving. Each puzzle tells something in relation with the story. Also, the gameplay is immersive so it won't be hard to be sucked into the story.
JOF: What can be told about the tagline 'The most terrifying game you will never win'?
GC: Well, as it says, Perturbia is a very hard game, and we wanted to point that out and make it as clear as possible. I think that maybe only a 15% of the players will be able to finish it. That's why Perturbia makes the difference among many others games, where the gameplay itself it's based on just wandering around on first person view, waiting for some cheap jump scares and no real game. Here, the player will be facing different kind of puzzles that will force them to use a variety of skills along the way.
JOF: The difficult game style makes you die a lot, right? The scare factor will not be repetitive with this?
GC: Perturbia is not meant to be repetitive, at all. In fact, the puzzle variety makes it hard to be. There are some moments where you can die, such as in the elevator's QTE sequence, but that's not happen in every single puzzle. Only in specific ones, and there's a reason that lays beneath for the player to die.
JOF: What games and movies (or any different media) that inspired Perturbia style and story?
GC: We are old school, hardcore gamers. Our main inspirations are games from the 90's, such us Alone in the dark, The 7th Guest, Silent Hill, Myst, among others. Perturbia is also inspired in some cult movies such as "In the mouth of madness" or "Event horizon", to name a few.
JOF: The story was conceived with the help from a team of psychologists. What was their contribuition?
GC: The psychology team plays a major role in Perturbia. They helped us to make a twisted story credible. Perturbia is not a supernatural story, although you may find some elements that may make you think that along the way. When the script was finished, we had several meetings with various psychologists in order to assure that it was well wrapped up.
JOF: How is the experience on Steam Greenlight and Kickstarter?
GC: They are quite different in fact. While Steam is more like a popularity contest where we vote things that we'd like to see come true, Kickstarter is more about your business plan. In Steam you show your game and the people will let you know if they like it or not. On the other hand, in Kickstarter you have to prove not only that your product is worthy but also that you are able to do it. While in Steam we did an excellent campaign, on Kickstarter we found the issue that the audience is becoming a little reluctant when it comes to projects from latin america, for example. And proving that you'll finish your product and make their money worth it's a really hard goal to achieve.
JOF: There will be retro mini games, right? How they will fit on the main gameplay and horror story?
GC: Every single mini game or puzzle is related to the main story plot. It tells you a part of it, even if you don't realize at that moment. Sometimes you'll find some puzzles or mini games a bit odd or bizarre, and that's what we want. When you find something out of place, you'll be with that in mind even longer that if you find something that fits. And that will be helping you unveil the story as you play.
JOF: I just loved the introductory comic, it will be another issues? Or an epilogue comic? (Download here!)
GC: Yes, there are a couple more on their way!
JOF: What's next on your projects?
GC: Glad you ask. We are planning to release Perturbia on December 2015, or Q1 2016, depending on some factors that we are taking into account but since it's our first big project we are aware that we may face some issues that make us modify our schedule. With that in mind, a few months ago we started sketching our next game, but I'm not able to tell much about it at this stage. All I can say is that it will be done for a wider audience, taking advantage of the power of Unreal Engine 4. Also we think that first person horror is a little bit worn, so we will be working on another perspective for the player. Of course, we will be sticking to our premises: we will deliever an original and intriguing story wrapped around a nerve wracking game! As if it were not enough, we are also working on a small project, that we will be releasing for free as soon as it's completed.

Oh, these awesome 8bit style. That will never end!
Against the current, this game features a local multiplayer up to 4 players.
It will feature amazing stages as the Battle Arena (something like Towerfall), Trap Run (that reminds us about Super Meat Boy), Lava Dogdge and many more!

JOF Spotlight - Orion Trail
Wait, that's grumpy cat as a ship captain?
Man, this looks awesome.
A space adventure where you need to deal with the galaxy issues as a captain of Indestructible II.

The mission: To explore and (try to) survive the Orion Trail.
Make crazy decisions, face enemies like Mysterious Illness, Warp Weasels and Spacesquashes as you deal with stats of Food, Fuel, Crew and Hull.

It's time for another game in our Spotlight!
This time we're going to introduce CrossCode, an awesome action rpg with an interesting story.
You play as Lea, a girl trapped in a MMO world, without memory and without voice.
As you play, you will find out what happened to her, and who you are.
The combat seems pretty fast-paced, and simple, with attacks on left click and dodge on right, running on wasd. It's pretty fun to play, and the demo is great!

JOF Interview - Legends of Pixelia
Hey there, folks!
Today we'll have a chat with Sima, the developer and creator behind Legends of Pixelia, an awesome rogue-like game that is a tribute for the 8-bit era.
So, let's go!
JOF: So, let's start! Tell us who you are and what's your role on Legends of Pixelia.
Sima: Hey there! My name is Florian Siemer, the nickname is Sima. I live, study and work in Berlin (Germany) and my one-man game studio is called SimaGames.
Sebastian Stern is doing the music for Legends of Pixelia, I'm doing everything else.
JOF: Tell us what Legends of Pixelia is about.
Sima: Legends of Pixelia is an action RPG playing in a low res pixelart world. I love the action RPG genre, but some games of it share one major flaw: It's not at all about the player's skill.
You left-click through hordes of brainless enemies again and again until you find the next pieces of your overpowered equipment set to let you left-click through more brainless enemies on a higher difficulty. This might be funny for a short time, but I wanted to make something different. So, to add a high player skill cap, I decided to implement arcade like controls (use a gamepad or your keyboard) and an interesting fighting system, inspired by the beat 'em up genre.
This worked out quite well. At the current state of development you can evade nearly all of the incoming damage if you are skilled enough. That allowes experienced players to choose full offensive stats -- what do you need HP for if you won't be hit at all? On the flip side: I highly recommend defensive stats for new players; you will be hit.
JOF: By the way, how did you came with this name? It's pretty fun!
Sima: Hehe, thanks! Some major inspiration for Legends of Pixelia comes from the "The Legend of Zelda" series, so I thought it would be a good idea to choose a name related to that. By the way: Pixelia is not a damsel in distress, it's the name of the game's world.
JOF: Legends of Pixelia is different from the other roguelike games, starting with the game design. What else is unique on it?
Sima: The main difference is the strong focus on the combat system and the player's skill. Some minor changes in attack speed or cooldown reduction has a big impact on the possible combos a player is able to do. If you play coop multiplayer, you are able to do combos together, if your team is skilled enough.
Another difference is that a run in Legends of Pixelia is not as random as runs in comparable roguelikes. You slowly build your hero over multiple playing sessions, allowing you to keep the items you find on your way. The items, stats and level up systems are inspired by the action RPG genre.
JOF: Great! Another 8-bit legend! I just loved the music and sound effects (specially the game over sound), they're pretty nostalgic! Tell us what inspired you guys into making this game.
Sima: The main inspiration came from other video games. To name a few, Legends of Pixelia has some similarities with or was inspired by: The Legend of Zelda (NES), Final Fantasy Adventure (GameBoy), The Binding of Isaac (PC), Diablo (PC) and Lunia (PC).
JOF: What kind of loot and enemies can we discover while playing Legends of Pixelia?
Sima: There are multiple dungeons in Legends of Pixelia, each one has a specific theme to it. In the first dungeon, The Crypt, you will encounter lots of undead enemies. This dungeon isn't too hard, so new players have a chance to get to know their hero and it's skills. The second dungeon is a cave full of flying and shooting enemies. The real game is starting here.
Regarding equipment: I decided to give the player full access to all of the hero's skills from the very beginning. The items you find while traveling through the dungeons give the player a wide range of different stats, that allow a unique playing style. Your character is moving too slow? Go for movement speed. Want to make crazy combos? Go for attack speed and cooldown reduction. Dying too often? Go for the defensive stats... You get the point.
JOF: The combat is pretty tactic, and the bosses are hard to beat. What inspired this gameplay decision?
Sima: I always loved some kind of challenge while playing video games. A high difficulty is necessary to help getting the most out of a player. No one is interested in learning combos in a game where every enemies dies in one hit. I really enjoyed watching some very skilled players doing speed runs in the recent AGDQ 2015. A high player skill component encourages your players to really learn, understand and master your video game.
JOF: How's the experience on Indiegogo and Steam Greenlight?
Sima: It's cool. The hardest part for a no-name gamedev is spreading the word. The IndieGoGo and the Greenlight campaigns really helped here. I got lots of cool feedback, some backers and thousands of views from all over the world.
JOF: Why recurring into flexible funding?
Sima: I will release Legends of Pixelia anyway. With flexible funding, interested gamers are able to preorder the game without the risk of not reaching the set campaign goal. As an unknown developer using zero budget marketing, it was hard to erstimate the campaign's outcome. Flexible funding will help to make Legends of Pixelia as polished as possible, no matter if the campaign succeeds or fails.
JOF: What's next on your projects?
Sima: I'm working on a tutorial for newly created heroes in Legends of Pixelia at the moment. Next up is the third dungeon and the Sentinel hero class.

JOF Interview - Jonathanjo
Hey there, pokemon fans!
How are you?
Today we'll have a chat with Jonathan Le Drappier Aka Jonathanjo, the awesome digital artist that is responsible for the amazing pokeball designs.

So, my questions were similar to an interview that Jonathanjo had with Edouard Prime, journalist at Melty.fr, so here's the english translation of it (By himself).
EP: Pokeball realistic, what is it?
Jonathanjo: It’s some photo edits made mainly from Adobe Photoshop.
In detail, I take one of my picture and then I add some elements to match the Pokemon universe to reality. I am the first to have create this digital concept, this is not very well known in France but in the oversea countries, thanks to Tumblr and DeviantArt because my concept has made a buzz. Moreover, each of my Pokeballs have a tremendous success.
EP: How did you get this passion?
Jonathanjo: December 2011, my little brother who is a fan of Pokemon, Lucario is his favorite one. Then, He asked me to put this character into a Pokeball.
Obviously he expected to have some in the real life, but I‘ve made it on the computer.
And that's where I got the idea of creating Pokeballs Realists on my blog DeviantART with advices. I'm not really a fan of Pokemon, but this concept appeals so many people and allows me to improve my creativity.
EP: Tell me about your debut?
Jonathanjo: Basically, I have a DeviantART account for all the drawings that I drew on the computer.
In the 6 previous years, my level drawing was not tedious, but I improved more over time.
With the acquisition of my graphics tablet in early 2012, I was able to made some work on computer much more developed like digital paintings, fanarts and concept arts.
EP: How do you work?
Jonathanjo: I work in my room or outside in peace.
My work tools are my Macbook pro, which is ideal for digital art. I mainly use Photoshop and I also own a SLR camera with which I can take pictures breathtaking.
EP: What are your plans, ambitions?
Jonathanjo: My project is to want to become 2D animator, and create animated cartoons.
For now, since the concept realistic Pokeballs still works and I will continue the same time to do a bit of Digital Art and Fanart.
Also, I will not get into an animation project quite common, which will no doubt be many debates, the name of it is "All Mighty"
Unfortunately, France on anything that is creative and digital is not very evolved.
My ambition is to leave at the end of 2014 in Australia to an art school in Melbourne. It’s already done =) If the RMIT in Melbourne does not accept me, I will go to the FZD Art School in Singapore. I Actually looking for a work in Melbourne CDB
EP : Who visit and observe the artistic site for which you publish your creations?
Jonathanjo: These are usually people who like Pokemon or digital art.
Most of them are already on DeviantART, which is still little known in France for my taste.
As a reminder, this site is a community where each person wishing posting his works may interact with other people with the same artistic interests, this is a kind of Facebook or Tumblr only devoted to art.
EP: How is your function perceived by those around you?
Jonathanjo: Most of the people around me know that I'm creative.
But I am someone who likes to share a lot of unusual things, original and artistic.
My best friends think it's normal, some are amazed by what I do with my drawings or my pokeballs. Everybody encouraging me to continue on this way.
EP: Working on it, what is their purpose?
Jonathanjo: I'm alone to work on realistic Pokeballs, but some people who follow me trying to do things based on my concept, even if most of the time people plagiarise this one.
EP: How much time devoted to you and who are you?
Jonathanjo: You should know, because some of my works became are popular, I was able to create a community that still more demand.
The time I spend in the development is quite difficult because it's pretty random according to requests and as a function of time I take. Of course, every day I have to check my social networks.
I am a French backpacker actually in Melbourne, I’ve near of 22 years old, I love my family and my friends.
I left the France because anything is original, everything is old and it’s economically not stable.
Despite my personal worries, I try to be of service to others and I would really like do that thru the art. Art can really a tool that allows to help others and also to convey important messages to an entire generation ..
EP: Oh yes, what are your strengths and possibly your difficulties to do this?
Jonathanjo: I taught myself everything I know about Photoshop through training, videos and also by myself especially.
It takes a rather critical analysis of his work to find out what people will perceive the final image. I have no difficulty in carrying out Pokeball, I get to have the desired result every time.
However, there are difficulties but not in the creativity, one is to be all the time in the trends related to Pokémon, Gaming and Geek.
Also, I try to reach as many people as I can for that those ones speak to their friends about my works. I have studied for several years by myself social marketing and also thru my business studies.

JOF Spotlight - NightCry
Hey there, folks!
Another horror game here, just funded on Kickstarter!
With an awesome team (that worked on Ico, Chrono Trigger and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night), NightCry is a new adventure horror game from the creator of Clock Tower games, with a collab from the director of The Grudge.
The story is set on a cruise ship, where is all going well, but soon the passengers starts to be murdered and chased by a killer with a giant scissor.
The game is focused on stealth and investigation gameplay, it features a really tense ambient where you use the smartphone to illuminate the rooms, look for survivors and search for clues. It's your main tool.
It looks like the survivor horror and adventure that we're waiting.
