The Sagrada Familia, The centrepiece of Barcelona
This monumental minor basilica is the most visited attraction in all of Spain, and for good reason. Upon completion, the Sagrada Familia will be the world’s tallest church. And, it’s ornate steeples will outstretch that of current the holder, Germany’s Ulm Minster Cathedral.
Born from the mind of Jose Maria Bocabella, a book publisher, construction on the Sagrada Familia began in March of 1882. Francisco del Villar was brought on board as head architect, but after an argument with Bocabella he stepped down with Gaudi filling his shoes. Although Gaudi continued to work on other projects, the Sagrada Familia soon consumed him and towards the end of life he moved into the church. In 1926, Gaudi was struck down and killed by a tram only a short distance from the Sagrada Familia. He was later buried in the church’s crypt.
Despite the fact that construction is not set to be completed until 2026, the Sagrada Familia is still a triumph to behold. The church’s intricate exterior is a tangle of sculptures with each one helping to tell the story of Christ. Gaudi designed the church with three facades. The left facade is the Nativity facade and tells the story of Christ’s birth. The Passion facade is on the right. This side documents Christ’s last days and eventual death. The Glory facade, which sits above the church’s entrance, is dedicated to the Glory of Christ.
Inside, the Sagrada Familia continues to inspire. Here, the artistry and brilliance of Gaudi’s architecture further comes to life. A devout Catholic, Gaudi believed that nature and spirituality were inextricably linked and designed his church accordingly. The beautiful, dominant columns that support the structure stretch up to the ceiling, branching out like forest trees. And, the lights that reflects through the stained glass windows dances across the church’s walls, ceilings and floors.
