Big up Circus Fam!
A Really Basic Minimap
I’ve added a really basic minimap to my game. One small thing I noticed was how long and boring it got walking over to the drop off point. I know I have to add some extra playability features, and they’re coming. But the minimap shows the drop off point, so it enables to player to already have a sense of achievement, because they can already see where the objective finished.
This is also gunna be awesome when I add NPC’s in to the game. The minimap will show them, allowing the player to make evading decisions.
You Break, You Buy
Not sure why the package was shaking so much, but break it, you buy it. Also, check out the fade script here. Nice fail too, huh?
Prototype Scene Selection
Created and updated three new scenes. First, the Splash. This is to showcase the name, logo, the developer (me, duh.) and some other boring stuff.
Level One Win, and Loss. Two different scenes to handle whether the user has met the win scenario, or loss. All scenes fade now, too.
Drop Off Area!
I’ve implemented a drop off area in the Cartel Base. Once the package is dropped on the area, the drop off point is destroyed. This will be changed to enable a win scenario. The lose scenario is catered by a time limit. Essentially, the player has a certain amount of time to run to the drop off point and deliver the package. If they don’t ... THEY DIE. So far, the drop off point is incredibly basic. But this is a prototype.
Pickup-able Items!
I’ve added a little script to my FPController, this will allow the user to pickup, and drop items. The next task is to create a drop-off point that allows the user to obtain points. Video here -

Building Le Cartel Base
I’ve started building the cartel base. This is the area where the packages need to be dropped off, in order to pass that level.
I’m most likely going to create one functioning level, however, an idea is to create levels in both the day and night, as well as possibly adding rain and wind as a factor of challenge for the drones flight. Maybe, maybe not.
The juices are flowing. Kinda.
I’ve came up with an idea of a game. Finally. I’ll be uploading some prototype documentations including rough sketches and gameplay plans soon. Or maybe not. You know how students are. A few weeks ago I read a story about a Drone that crashed in to a prison, that was smuggling drugs and a mobile phone in to it. How ironic. Thus, my game idea was born. A game based on smuggling packages in to a prison! What could possibly go wrong?
Mt Doom, here I come.
It’s a LOTR reference, and If you don’t get it just leave the internet. I have four weeks left of ‘untimetabled’ university left. I say untimetabled, because Im locking myself inside and working like hell to finish both end of year projects. Project One : A C# application that students can use to record deadlines, and work out their GPA for the year.
Project Two : Create a prototype 3D game. Sounds easy enough, right? I’m starting with the 3D game, and I’ve already gone arse about face. Instead of actually sitting down and planning something, I’ve jumped right in to unity and started building a pretty terrain, with a first person controller. So far, no ideas for my game. But enjoy this picture.
I’m thinking of maybe a quadcopter simulator, but as one of my tutors said. “What’s the win/lose situation?” There isn’t one. I just wanted to make a nice sim game. I would say “Back to the drawing board”, but I haven’t even been there yet. So, off to the drawing board, I guess,
Who even blogs, anymore?
I’ve never really understood blogging. Writing useless posts about your life, that in fact, no one really cares about. Anyway, let me introduce myself.
My name is Joss York, I’m 21, studying Computing and Games Development at Plymouth, and I freelance as a Product Designer/Frontend Developer.
I started designing at the tender age of 16. Back then, in the good ol’ days of my youth, I never thought I’d be pursuing a career within the creative technology industry. I’ve always had a feeling of what I wanted to do, and that was to be a programmer like my Granddad. What type of programmer? I didn’t really know. I guess over the last 5 years I’ve landed here, and this is the type of programmer I’m going to be. A game developer. Oh joy! Anyway, to bulk out my first post (Nhawww, I’m a noob) I’ll post some of my most recent design work.
