The juices are flowing. Kinda.
I’ve came up with an idea of a game. Finally. I’ll be uploading some prototype documentations including rough sketches and gameplay plans soon. Or maybe not. You know how students are. A few weeks ago I read a story about a Drone that crashed in to a prison, that was smuggling drugs and a mobile phone in to it. How ironic. Thus, my game idea was born. A game based on smuggling packages in to a prison! What could possibly go wrong?
The Life of a Junior Beerstorian: Guest post by an OHBA intern
My name is Carly Clark and I am currently a senior majoring in History with a minor in Spanish at Oregon State University. When I turned 21 in January 2013 I discovered the world of craft beer in the Pacific Northwest – and my love for a good wheat beer.
Over the course of 2013, I looked for opportunities to discover the best craft breweries in Oregon. I spent my free time enjoying a nice local beer with family and friends, while deepening my passion for beer. I discovered where there are people, there is beer. Within the past year I have tried local beers in six different states -- and I am determined to try one in all fifty states!
During fall term 2013 I began working on my senior thesis paper. The research work centered on the roles and contributions made by female students at Oregon State College during World War II. I spent countless hours in the OSU archives digging through different collections looking for valuable primary sources related to my research topic. During my time in the archives I frequently heard about the newly established Oregon Hops and Brewery Archives (OHBA) at the OSU Libraries. After discussing the details about OHBA with OSU Archivist Tiah Edmunson-Morton, I knew I had found something I wanted to be a part of. I was determined to apply my passion for beer and love for history to the OHBA collection.
Not only are we proud to say our home state of Oregon is the craft beer capital of the world, but we are also proud to say we are part of history in the making. The OHBA collection is the first of its kind in the United States. Our mission is to work towards preserving and share the history of beer and hops in Oregon, but that is history that runs through the rest of the United States too! Our main goal for OHBA is to give any future historian, beer enthusiast, or anyone else the opportunity to use our collection as a building block for their research or own personal learning.
I have spent the past seven weeks compiling a list of sources related to hops, beer, the brewing process, and the history of beer in general to put in our Zotero library. Our research resources for OHBA have grown to include a list containing well over three hundred book titles. I hope to see our archive grow and continue to flourish. Tiah, my fellow interns, and I have big hopes and plans for the upcoming spring term. We plan to work with local breweries to assist with the compiling information for our archival collection. Tiah has currently worked with a well-known Oregon brewery, McMenamins, which happens to have been established by Oregon State University alumni.
After I graduate this upcoming spring, I hope that my contribution to the OHBA collection will help it expand into a well-recognized and unique piece of history within the world of craft beer not only in Oregon, but also in the United States.
I am proud to say I am part of something bigger than just you and I. I am a junior Beerstorian!
