For my final project I wanted to make another gif. I had never made a gif prior to this and it intrigued me I believe. Last time I did it so manually that I didn’t work with photoshop framework at all. So I decided to give that a go because I gave up on my other gif I was going to make. This piece is called Weathering, I love all the colors that came together for this, and I just love all the seasons (especially fall) so that’s how the idea came. I realized that making framework animation was way harder than I imagined and I have to give props to make these, I just got to practice now! I wanna make more gifs!!

Animation Project GIF: Lose it.

For my process for this project, I really wanted to do something like what David did with his GIFs as I mentioned earlier but in actuality there was absolutely no way for someone mere like me to even TRY to make something of that sort. Though with enough research MAYBE I could’ve, but either way I am happy with my result. I have always had an interest in psychedelic art or psychological artworks that make you see things that aren’t moving. So something eerily colorful was what I was going for. I had made this fox drawing already but I definitely added some nice colors in there as well as change different colors as backgrounds and took multiple screenshots. In some rare shots the fox part is altered to look more weird.

RENAISSANCE GIFS BY SCORPION DAGGER

Blog Entry 3: For this last entry I wanted to review gifs of Scorpion Dagger, specifically The Renaissance. First of all, what name that this guy has, Scorpion Dagger? A synonym to it would be “Spider Knife”. Anyways, this guy had some amazing GIFs so I had nothing to complain. The picture I posted on top as well as another one where it depicts time to “EAT CHIPS” were my favorites. His work seems dependent on concept more than the technicality of the GIF. Nonetheless very enjoyable.

David Szakaly GIFs

Blog Entry 2: For my second entry for project Animate is multiple of David Szakaly’s amazing GIFs. I’ve always seen some of these somewhere on the internet, but I never knew who actually made it and now I dooooOO! Anyways, these are honestly amazing, looking at them I really want to learn how to attempt to make these. These are like GIF porn, and aesthetically these really please my eyes, and I love all the colors. I wonder how long it takes for him to make one of these, and the concept part. I definitely want to try.

Blog Entry 1: From all the newer media forms we have been seeing gaining popularity, GIFs are one of my favorites. There’s something about GIFs that really pull you in I think, I’m not sure if it’s the loop, or the concept. This one by Lorna Mills is really intriguing to me, it’s not that special, detailed or meaningful. It’s just a simple mountain forming as a gif, but in a really pixelated way. I even hate a lot of pixelation in a photo or artwork. I do think the piece looks a lot better at Times Square more than just looking at it from a laptop screen. I think the whole concept of not really knowing what it’s going to form as at the beginning is the most intriguing part and I think that’s what other people like about it as well.

Summary of Avant-GIFS

Turning online animations into high art by Jesse Walker. 

Before this hugely digital age, motion picture lasted only around 90 to 120 minutes. That was the norm, while film shorts really had not been picked up yet. But now in today’s society thanks to cable, DVDs and internet streaming, our television includes not just old soap operas but many other hours for anything people want to produce. On the other hand, there has been a great spike in short films, and obviously the one and only GIFs. Gifs are simultaneously the shortest variety of motion picture and the longest based on the loops. These have existed since the 1987 but didnt hit it’s spotlight until the past few years.

The most popular GIFs are small snippets from tv or movies, taken from the context and made into another. On the article is said “disposable little gag to stick in a Tumblr post or a Buzzfeed article” which related to me, and I completely agree. 

Milos Rajkovic a.k.a Sholim, made a GIF that kind of looks like a Max Ernst collage crossed with one of Terry Gilliam’s animations from Monty Python’s Flying Circus. That GIF actually was one of the coolest gifs I ever saw, though i definitely think I saw it before somewhere. There are other examples of GIFs but that one caught my eye the most.

For my Data Visualization Project I made one on a simpler subject with Ramen.

We all enjoy ramen, some of us enjoy it way much more than expected and eat it every day in college. For me ramen is sacred, it is not a dish that can be easily replaced in my mind as great. Not only do I enjoy the prices of ramen I actually really really enjoy the taste. I have also been to all of the ramen places in northern Virginia. But anyways, there were so many awful topics I could’ve done mine on that I chose the comic relief kind of, maybe heh.

Now that I see it though, I want to remove those dotted line I made for the facts. 

I am also hungry now.

The beauty of Data Visualization

For my last blog entry for Data Visualization, I am going to write about David McCandless at TEDGlobal on what he talked about on data visualization. He starts out saying that we are suffering from information overload or data glut. He says that if we start using our eyes more out data glut will get better. I really enjoyed the video, I think it packed a lot of information into one small video. And its crazy to visually see some of the information he picked up. Like when he compared the money uses for certain things in the world and how we use three billion in climate change fund, to OPEC’s revenue of a whopping 780 billion a year. That is insane to think about, and makes me lose a little bit of faith in humanity.

The World’s Most Wanted and Least Wanted Paintings, Komar and Melamid.

I thought this was a really interesting concept to think and to actually implement it, so clever. I did appreciate also how every painting has a term in parenthesis  describing the painting size-wise but the description is common house hold items as everyone has seen how big or small they are. What great extent they went to get this data. How do you even find out what Kenya’s least Wanted painting is? Who decided and how many people? 

Nonetheless what a great concept, kudos.

Blog Entry: Data Visualization by Neil Halloran

This data visualization is so amazing to look at, the whole process when it sprinkles on to a straight line you would never think that that data is a sad data.

This data visualization is the total number of deaths caused by an all-out nuclear war. It’s said in the site he used to use animated data visualization to illustrate how many soldiers and civilians were killed during the Second World War, but now he’s paying attention to something more potentially worse, which is the next world war.

I appreciate when he talked about how he always tries to find ways to make statistical information less boring and intimidating, and how it’s important to express numbers with emotion and cinematic drama. I think he works those magic well, his visual data was very powerful.

The Digital age of Data art

“By blurring boundaries between art and information, data art dispels the myth of the romantic artist while offering a fundamental artistic act in a crucial commentary of the digital age in which we live” says Grugier on his article on Data art which I think summarized the main point.

In a world where digital technology is everywhere data is very easy to retrieve, many new media artists have utilized and made an art form from datas.  These data could be graphics, simulations, worksheets, statistics, etc Any virtual data made by our environment can be transformed into images, sounds, or objects. 

He also talked in the article about algorithms and data flows and how they’re used in data art. Algorithms are a sequence computer instruction applied by a machine or a software. With these algorithms a computer does automatic tasks without being assisted. 

Data visualization is the first step in data art, which is finding out how to view the data. Amongst all the other techniques of data art there are bar charts, pie charts, scatter graphs, lines, bubbles, heat maps, etc. All of them have one goal in data art which is figuring out different ways of making visually attractive and understandable “datascapes” that our everyday.

Datascape: The data platform provides thedefinition of visualization and implementation.

Composite project: Half&half

I wanted to explore the general concept of a human with a face thats half something else. But I wanted it to be more surreal so I played around with the colors, contrast, brightness and boldness. I do like how they all came out different, though I think the regular brown ones are my favorites. This was a cool effect to do and explore, I had a lot of fun making these and choosing what color to go with.

Composite Project: CityWay

This was not a portrait but I wanted to play around and see what it would look like. The whole concept behind it is that living in the city you never get to see bright stars, you can only do that when you leave the city and go into the countryside with much less lights beaming at night. But more stars shining of course, though we would never see it actually happening, I thought would be nice.

This was my last experiment on glitch art. Though I have to say I’ve been really enjoying Glitch art and has been appreciating the works much more as well. I think it’s an underrated category with so much potential for making a lot of stuff work, what I love about glitch art the most is we don’t know what we’re going to get until we finish and can look at. The many ways of approaching this type of art should draw a lot of people in. I like this piece mostly due to it being very weird and creepy almost to look at. Like the earth is doomed, which it probably is :/

Blog entry 3: Celebrity Make-under

These set of pictures were so so so so so funny, honestly who ever did the technical work did an AMAZING job. But other than technical these picture bring out the fact that they are normal people too, kind of. I mean if they didn’t have millions of dollars and plastic surgery. The Madonna and the Lady Gaga one I literally lost it, and they really are like seeing people if they weren’t rich. What a great concept, makes me think if I had all that money I’d be good looking too? Kind of, heh.

Jason Salavon: Every Playboy Centerfold, The Decades 2002

Blog entry: These vague looking pictures are of mean averaging every Playboy centerfold foldout for the four decades starting 1960s. You see vague and then you look at it again and then it all makes sense. I think its funny how as the decades go on, the vague woman’s hair gets lighter. And it also just shows that these pictures do look very similar, I mean it is a naked woman somewhere 80% of the whole picture usually, doing something in the centre, and bam here we got it. I think Salavon did this to mock how similar they actually look.

William Wegman

Family Combinations 1972

Blog Entry: This I thought was a very interesting composite Wegman made. They all look so funny. The top three pictures is him and his parents and the bottom three are likely outcomes for all possible combinations. A portrait is supposed to be serious, mostly for passports and identification purposes, I like how he took that and made it into something humorous almost. I think what makes it most funny is the fact that there is a lot of the mom in all three of the bottom.
