(there’s barely any fics of him anywhere and he’s so fine so i had to..)
the studio smelled like warm vinyl, hairspray, and somebody’s fried chicken from earlier. motown stayed busy no matter what time it was. people walked in and out of rooms with clipboards, wires dragged across the floor, and music leaked through every wall.
you sat on the edge of a chair outside studio b, tapping your fingers against your knee while your mom talked to one of the women working there. she’d brought you along because she helped with costumes sometimes, but honestly, you were just trying not to be bored.
that was until you heard laughing. loud laughing, boy laughing.
you looked up just in time to see the jackson 5 running down the hallway like somebody had set them loose from school early. jermaine was chasing marlon, michael was spinning in circles singing something under his breath, and tito looked tired already.
but jackie walked slower than the rest of them. trying to appear cooler.
he had on a denim jacket over a fitted shirt, an afro picked out perfectly, and that little smile that looked like he knew something everybody else didn’t.
and unfortunately for you, he noticed you staring.
“you know it’s rude to look at people like that,” he said, slowing down in front of your chair.
your eyes widened. “i wasn’t staring.”
“you definitely were.”
“okay maybe a little.”
he grinned. “i’m jackie.”
“i know who you are.”
“most people scream first.”
“well i’m trying to act normal.”
“you failing just a little.”
you tried not to laugh but it slipped out anyway.
michael suddenly popped up beside him out of nowhere. “jackie got a girlfriendddd.”
“man, go somewhere,” jackie muttered, pushing him away while michael cackled and ran off again.
you covered your smile with your hand.
“don’t listen to him,” jackie said quickly, suddenly looking nervous for the first time. “he talk too much.”
“seems like all y’all do.”
“yeah probably,”
there was a small silence before he nodded toward the studio doors. “you waiting for somebody?”
“my mom. she’s helping with wardrobe stuff.”
“oh.” his face lit up. “that mean you gon’ be around more?”
you shrugged, trying to act casual even though your stomach flipped a little. “maybe.”
“good.”
the way he said it made your cheeks warm.
before you could answer, berry gordy himself yelled down the hall for the boys to get inside. everybody immediately started moving.
jackie backed away slowly but kept looking at you.
“wait here after rehearsal,” he said. “i wanna show you something.”
you raised an eyebrow. “what?”
“it’s a surprise.”
“that sounds a lil’ suspicious.”
“nah. trust me.”
he pointed at you with a smile before jogging backward into the studio.
and somehow the next two hours felt like ten.
you pretended to read magazines while hearing pieces of songs through the walls. sometimes you caught jackie peeking out the studio window at you between takes. every time he did, he’d smile quick before somebody noticed.
finally the doors opened again.
the boys spilled out exhausted and sweaty while adults rushed around talking schedules. your mom was still busy, which meant you had nothing stopping you when jackie walked over holding two cold coca colas.
“c’mon,” he said quietly.
he led you through the building until you reached the roof access door. once outside, the evening air hit your skin soft and warm. detroit’s city lights stretched below you, glowing gold against the darkening sky.
“wow,” you whispered.
“told you.”
he sat down on the ledge carefully and handed you one of the sodas.
for a second neither of you spoke.
it felt weirdly peaceful up there compared to downstairs.
“you ever get tired of all this?” you asked softly. “people always around you?”
jackie leaned back on his hands. “sometimes.” he glanced over at you. “everybody always looking at us like we supposed to be perfect or something.”
“that sounds exhausting.”
“it is.” he smiled faintly. “but moments like this help.”
your heart did a tiny stupid little thing in your chest.
the wind pushed softly through his hair while he looked at you like you were the only person around for miles.
“you got pretty eyes,” he said suddenly.
you blinked. “that was smooth.”
“nah, i’m serious.”
“you say that to all the girls you talk to?”
“only the pretty ones.”
you laughed again, shaking your head.
he smiled watching you, and for a second you forgot he was famous at all. he just felt like a regular teenage boy trying to impress a girl he liked.
then quieter, he asked, “you got a boyfriend?”
“no.”
his smile got bigger immediately. “good.”
“jackie!”
“what? i’m honest.”
you rolled your eyes playfully, but your face was hot.
down below, car horns echoed faintly through the city. somewhere inside the building, somebody started playing piano keys.
jackie stared out at the skyline for a second before speaking again.
“sometimes i wish i could just…” he paused. “walk around normal. go to movies. hang out without security or managers yelling.”
“you’ll probably still be able to someday.”
“only if you come with me.”
you looked at him.
he looked back at you with that same nervous confidence boys got when they finally said what they’d been thinking the whole time.
“you flirt a lot,” you teased softly.
“only with you.”
that line should’ve sounded corny.
but under the city lights with his shoulder brushing yours and that shy smile on his face, it sounded perfect.
you leaned closer without really thinking about it.
jackie noticed immediately.
his voice dropped quieter. “can i kiss you?”
you nodded once.
he moved slow, careful, like he was scared to ruin the moment. his lips brushed yours soft at first before he smiled against your mouth a little.
and somewhere downstairs, somebody yelled for “jackie!”
you both pulled apart laughing.
“looks like you gotta go.”
“man,” he groaned dramatically, dropping his head back. “they never let me live.”
“guess being a jackson comes with interruptions.”
he stood up reluctantly and held his hand out toward you.
“you gon’ come back tomorrow?”
you slipped your hand into his.
“maybe.”
“there you go acting mysterious again.”
“and you like it.”
jackie smirked. “yeah. i do.”
