When the “Toxic” songwriting team of Cathy Dennis, Christian Karlsson, Pontus Winnberg and Henrik Jonback came up with “Sweet Dreams My LA Ex” as a reply to Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me A River” video, and his exploitation of the break-up to further his own career, Britney refused to record it, on grounds of lyrical content, and it was offered instead to Rachel Stevens. It was something of a surprise, then, to find that Britney was prepared to aim “Why Should I Be Sad” at Kevin Federline. It suggests that she still harbored some regard for Timberlake, but none for Federline, who seems to have been a disappointment on every level.
