In Episode 5, Season 1 of The Last Kingdom, Uhtred is once again his own worst enemy. He still can’t control the impulses that sabotage him. We want to root for him, but storming a church just to prove a point to Alfred? It’s the perfect example of how his anger keeps overpowering his rational side.
At this stage of the story, what interests me most is watching how he evolves. He needs to understand that justice isn’t achieved through rage but through clarity, patience, and strategy. And the irony is that he can be a brilliant strategist — we saw it at the beginning of the episode, when he sneaks into the Danish settlement and kills Ubba with precision and cunning. That version of Uhtred is the one who could actually win.
