I don’t know. You’ve been acting weird again. Probably depressed. Did you know depression affects one in five Native Americans?
In Reservation Dogs, a theme that comes up frequently is an unspoken tension between generations and how they interact with things such as death, as in Mabel.
Elora is increasingly shaken by all the adults coming together to remember a woman she didn’t know. And she was in a position where bringing up the version of Mabel she knew, an unaffectionate and sarcastic woman, seemed inappropriate. To exacerbate this, Aunt Teenie sees Cookie in her and leans on Elora despite them being practically strangers and expecting her to understand. She also gives Elora a glimpse into who she could be like, leaving the Village due to a loved one’s death. Throughout the episode Elora is anxious about her feelings mismatching everyone else’s. We’ve previously only had a small glimpse into Elora’s life with Mabel as she tried to say goodbye to her in S1. Its not clear if Mabel was someone Elora somewhat hated or had otherwise complicated feelings about.
At the moment Mabel dies, Elora is completely overwhelmed. This is the second time shes seen the face of a deceased loved one in recent memory. Her Aunt Teenie hugs her, looking for mutual comfort that Elora is too in-shock to provide.
When she goes out for air to the backyard, where Bear previously met with his Spirit friend, she sees Mabel. And Mabel says goodbye and acts exactly how Elora remembers her, unaffectionate and sarcastic. Elora smiles and laughs and looks relieved. Mabel, in an indirect expression of love, gives Elora the space to love and remember her as she knew her, not the person she was before Cookie died.
"You're a good man, Cheese!"
These words ring true for my favorite 'Reservation Dogs' character, especially in this week's episode. I had a range of emotions watching this episode, starting first with shock to crying happy tears. I just love Cheese (played brilliantly by Lane Factor), he's kind, good-hearted and the heart of the Rez Dogs gang.
Grief continues to weave it's way through this season. We find out how it affected Cheese after Daniel died, though that experience he learned that empathy and kindness goes a long way on how you treat someone.
The appearance of Big at the end of the episode had me cheering because if it wasn't Willy Jack, Elora, Bear or Jackie to help take him out of the group home, Big was the next best option.
I found it very important to highlight the all familiar sight of Native kids being raised by aunties, uncles, and Grandparents when their parents are no longer in the picture due to circumstances. Happy tears, pure happy tears, when Big dropped Cheese off at Grandma's house with the rest of the Rez Dogs reuniting with him.
Protect Cheese at all cost!!!!!!
"Be good to your Grandmother's"
'Reservation Dogs' is the best show on television and streaming services right now, hands down, the best! Its continuing to make us Native people beam with pride each episode.
does anyone else ever think about the season 2 finale of reservation dogs when they were all at the beach and Daniel appeared in their circle and start uncontrollably sobbing
I only had the time to watch the newest Reservation Dogs ep now but what the fuck. Why do I care about Kenny Boy now.
Also unfortunately I'm going to need him and Big to become friends at the very least. They are too fucking funny together, but also... they weirdly complement each other? They're somehow on the same wavelength? I wasn't expecting that but I do love it.

LANE FACTOR as CHEESE in RESERVATION DOGS (2021- )
Paulina Alexis as Willie Jack was the best casting.
“Working in a loose, indie film style, Harjo and company build around moments, not plot points, and avoid the temptation to make a grand statement about the situation of American Indians. They use their young heroes’ daily life to offer glimpses — some silly, some profoundly moving — of a modern Native American reality that goes beyond the familiar narrative of victimization and misery.
Although they live with poverty and fractured families, the show’s characters are vibrantly alive. And there are episodes — like Cheese doing a ride-around with Officer Big; Willie Jack hunting with her dad; or Bear learning to become a roofer — that glow with a warmth and wisdom rare on television. I can think of no other show that gives a clearer sense of what it means to live in a community that feels like a community.
Reservation Dogs evokes a culture in which age-old tribal curses exist alongside discussions of gender pronouns, and the legacy of Crazy Horse sits side-by-side with hip-hop and references to Star Wars. The show is wised up enough to laugh at classic tropes, like the stoic and taciturn Indian, and to make light of the notion of spirit guides. Yet these are jokes from the inside. Even as the show has fun with Native American tradition, it finds a way of doing it honor.”
– John Powers, ‘Reservation Dogs,’ now in Season 2, remains one of the most original shows on TV

You're the deer lady. || How'd you know I was in trouble?
I love all the kids from Reservation Dogs, but Cheese-centered episodes always get me. My boy was trying to explain the concepts of gender and sexuality to some kid on juvie! He broke the rules to call his grandma, who's actually just a lady he found in the hospital one time!! He just tries to be nice to everyone he meets because he doesnt want others to feel what his late friend felt!!! He introduces himself to everybody by saying his name and pronouns, come on.
