Evil wizard tasteful pin-up magazine but it's all photos of like, skinny old goths coyly fingering cursed amulets, long-bearded sorcerers doing the 'oopsie' pose as their corrosive destruction spell destroys enough of their own robes to show some skin, naked desiccated lich king positioning his staff of human skulls just so it leaves something to the imagination, dark knights in full armor just holding their soul-eating blades out in front of their codpieces, orc chieftain who did not understand the assignment and is posing with a monster he killed like one of those guys-with-fish photos. Or maybe he DID understand the assignment. Hmm.

writing is 10% storytelling and 90% rearranging three sentences for an hour like you're trying to solve an ancient curse

#this is why it really bothers me that 90% of writing advice online is storytelling advice #often based on movies and series or lets be real just harping on cliches that have not been relevant in the genre for 20 years #but the person writing the post or video remembers being bored by at 15 which is the last time they engaged with new media #you really need to dig into writing spaces to get any prose related craft advice #even tho that tends to be the weakest point of newer writers and where you can lose people the quickest #and even with storytelling advice we should look at arcs and structures and theme more than tropes #good christ if I could take the word “trope” away from people for 10 years I would do so in a heartbeat
