I don’t know if I’ve already said this before or not, but Vader is SO horrifyingly yet endearingly hypocritical. This man murdered literal children and probably has personally slaughtered like THOUSANDS of OTHER people’s children without remorse, but GOD FORBID if any of them even THINK about touching HIS son!!! Like how dare they!!! Luke is just a pure baby who can do no wrong, and if anybody hurts him, Vader will 100% kill them!!! It’s SO good

i'm a little convinced the thing that breaks vader between ESB and ROTJ, that breaks his fervent desire for son, is the fact that he'd never actually imagined luke would rather die than follow him. because anakin himself had been a bottomless pit of desire for that same kind of connection, that in a lot of ways he'd desperately wanted obi-wan to be a father to him when obi-wan was interested, at most, in being a brother, that this - the craving for parental affection - was the thing that drove him to palpatine and into the dark in the first place. so much of vader's plan relied on luke being as desperate for that affection as anakin had been, and in some ways, luke is, but luke is not willing to capitulate himself to get that affection. he's not willing to work for in. in ROTJ, he asks, and he offers his own love, but he won't submit to be anything less than who he has made of luke skywalker.

it's the first time vader's ever been on the other side of that, as the father. and luke was willing to die to get away from him, in that moment, and vader has to face that he has fallen so far there wasn't a hope to defeat palpatine at all, and also just the brutal fear that luke can die and there's nothing luke would let vader do to stop it. vader has to face his fear of loss as a parent, and then that, of course, leads to the stray thought that if every parent of every child he's ever carelessly slaughtered felt like he did in that moment on bespin - well. the vader you see in ROTJ is a lot different for a reason, and, in my reading of it, it's because he had to stare that hypocrisy in the face between ESB and ROTJ. for the first time in over two decades he has to face, in a VERY small part, what he is and what justifications he made that got him to the point where his son would die before joining him, and everything that entails.
