gretchenflanagan:
gretchen wrapped her hands tighter around the strap of her backpack, digging her nails into her hand. she finally brought herself to drop the tupperware container back into her backpack and zip it up. “i’m not hungry…” she said, putting her backpack back on. she stared at the other girl for a moment, swallowing hard. she could feel tears brimming up in her eyes, blinking rapidly to keep them from falling. she didn’t even know what to say or where to start. why’d you leave me? i thought you loved me. i wanted to marry you. was i not enough? what’d i do wrong? she sat down next to juliet, though. she kept her backpack on for the purpose of a quick exit. “uh…” she stammered again, “how have you been?” gretchen looked down at her hands and began to pick at the white nail polish on her finger again, doing anything to keep her from making a comment that’d either start a fight or make the tears brimming in her eyes start to fall.
Juliet sighed and nodded, resisting the urge to call bullshit on Gretchen’s ‘not hungry’ claim. The last thing she wanted to think about was being the reason the girl had lost her appetite, and yet, here they were in that exact situation. Tension thickened the air between them, they were once two people who completed each other, who were never seen not tangled with the other in some way, and now they’re just two people who didn’t quite know how to act around each other. How much difference a few days could make. Juliet was genuinely surprised when Gretchen sat down, not expecting the girl to actually take the seat next to her, but welcomed the company all the same, despite the anxiety she could feel radiating off of her. “I’ve been fine,” She responded softly, glancing at Gretchen. “How have you been? And Morty?”
