A/N: This is a follow-up to Inconvenient Truths and is set during 2.15. Submission to @julychallenge prompt "emotional"
His heart unwittingly carried him to the fifth floor, and the woman he wanted to see as much as his head cautioned him avoidance was the better solution.
Ethan Ramsey couldn’t remember a time when he’d been this indecisive. Privately, he referred to it as the Louise effect. His emotions had been on a rollercoaster since his father told him his mother had returned and wanted to see him.
Depending on the time of day, his moods swung from surly to downright depressed to pretending indifference. He wouldn’t blame his dad for not taking his calls or Cassie for telling him she wanted a break.
Somehow, without meaning to or realizing it, he’d managed to drag everyone he loved onto the tumultuous ride.
His feet faltered as he neared the hospital room. Through the window, he caught a glimpse of sunny blonde hair. He stood off to the side, close enough to look inside but far enough away so Louise couldn’t see him.
Ethan saw the pain etched on his mother’s face as she gripped her stomach and the compassion in Cassie’s eyes as she adjusted the drug protocol and noted the change on the patient chart.
He wondered what she thought of the situation and his mother. He knew he had Cassie’s support; he always had that, even when he behaved like an ass.
His eyes were cool as they scrutinized the scene. A lifetime of drugs had aged Louise, giving her a hardened look, especially around the eyes.
His eyes, he realized. While the rest of his features resembled Alan, the shape of his eyes and the light blue color came from his mother.
What else had he inherited from her?
Lost in thought, he didn’t notice Cassie leave the room or stop beside him until she nudged his elbow.
“I didn’t expect to see you here,” she said cautiously. “It was good of you to admit her.”
“Good has nothing to do with it. She’s a patient. We’re doctors.” He couldn’t help the detached tone accompanying his words. “She’s entitled to three days of detox like everybody else.”
He must have sounded harsh, for Cassie’s eyes widened in surprise.
“And then what?” she asked.
Ethan knew she was frustrated by his evasiveness. Aside from their late-night conversation at Dagger Mountain, they hadn’t discussed this topic. Tip-toed around it? Yes. But sat down and talked like adults? No.
Cassie had tried; his father had, too. But he’d shut them both out, not ready to dissect the complicated mess of emotions and thoughts that crowded his brain.
Ethan straightened his coat, locked his hands behind his back and stared intently into the hospital room. “Since we got back from the resort, I’ve been looking for an addiction clinic to send her to that isn’t a scam.”
Unable to bear it any longer, Ethan looked away from the room in time to catch the resolve on Cassie’s face as she took a deep breath.
“She really wants to spend some time with you, Ethan,” she said softly. “It might do you both some good to just sit and talk a little.”
The latent anger inside him flared without warning. “I'm already doing more for her than she ever did for me. If it's not enough for her, tough.”
And waned just as quickly, replaced by uncertainty and guilt. “I don't know what I’m doing here,” he sighed deeply. “I’ve gotten her the help she needs. The rest should be up to her.”
Ethan wasn’t sure who he was trying to convince. He felt his eyes glisten and turned away before Cassie could see the tears spilling past his cheeks. He’d spent too many years crying over what couldn’t be, but it never seemed enough.
“She’s suffering,” Cassie said, reaching for his hand. “It's normal to want to check on her.”
“She deserves to,” Ethan snapped, unable to control the anger that boiled over, ready to burn everyone and everything in its path. “After what she did to me? To my father? She’s spent twenty-five years hurting the people who cared about her most.”
Why did Cassie still not understand what Louise’s abandonment, her betrayal of their family, had done to them?
“That may all be true,” Cassie inclined her head toward the window, “but look at her. She's not faking this.”
Ethan gritted his teeth at the tone in Cassie’s voice. It was the same one she used when dealing with a difficult patient—infinite patience overlaid with sympathy.
He sighed, swallowing down a nasty retort, and walked away from the window. Cassie followed, but then he’d expected her too. Her stubbornness was just one of the qualities that made her a good doctor, even if it could be annoying on a personal level.
“I keep catching myself thinking that she deserves to feel worse than this for what she did to us,” he said, halting, trying to find the right words to explain the conflict brewing inside him. “But I can't let myself think like that. Nobody here deserves worse. Nobody deserves better. That’s not how life works.”
He waited for Cassie to respond, but she remained silent as they walked down the busy hallway. Likely keeping her distance in case he bit her head off again, he thought morosely. He’d done it enough times since Louise’s reappearance that she could probably read the signs.
Just how infinite was her patience? He was sick of his attitude and his damn mood, so he could only imagine how others felt being around him.
They were nearing the elevator bank, out of sight of the nurses’ station, and Ethan couldn’t take the silent treatment anymore. He grabbed her wrist and hauled her into an empty patient room, slamming the door shut with the back of his foot.
Incensed, she pushed his arms away. “If you plan to shout at me again, I don’t have the time. Nor am I in the mood to be your punching bag. I know your automatic reaction is to shut me out when things hit too close to home. But the world isn’t black or white, Ethan. It’s shades of gray. Deal with it!”
Ethan could always tell when she was furious from how her entire body vibrated, hands clenched in tight fists, ready to slug. If violence weren’t anathema to her, she probably would’ve taken a swing at him already.
“I’m not gonna shout at you,” he barked, brows snapping in annoyance.
“You already are, Ethan,” Cassie huffed in exasperation, hands on her hips.
Of course, he was. Only two women in his life could make him lose control like this.
Ethan muttered, “Christ” under his breath and pinched the bridge of his nose. He took deep breaths, reining in his temper and frustration.
“I’m sorry,” he said, crossing the floor to take her hands and hold her close. “Louise brings out the worst in me.”
“I know!”
He grinned at the exaggerated eye-roll that accompanied the quip.
“I don’t know if I’ll ever act reasonably when it comes to her, but I shouldn’t take it out on you.” He placed two fingers on her chin and tilted her face up. “Forgive me?”
“Yes, but I need something from you first.”
He quirked one brow in question, curious about the mischievous glint in her green eyes despite the serious tone.
“You owe an apology kiss,” she smiled, running her hands up his chest to rest them on his shoulders.
Ethan laughed softly, the tension between them easing with the sound. “An apology kiss, huh? I think I can manage that.”
His fingers trailed from her chin to cup her cheek, his thumb brushing lightly over her skin. Their eyes locked, and the world around them seemed to fade. It was just the two of them standing there, inches apart.
He leaned in slowly, savoring the moment, his breath mingling with hers. Hers hitched in anticipation.
When his lips finally met hers, it was tender and sincere, an unspoken promise lingering in the warmth of the kiss. Her hands tightened on his shoulders, drawing him closer as she melted into the embrace.
As they parted, Ethan rested his forehead against hers, a soft chuckle escaping his lips.
“Well? What do you say?” he murmured, his voice filled with affection.
Cassie nodded, her eyes shining with the remnants of her playful challenge and a deeper, more profound emotion.
“It’s a good start,” she whispered back, brushing a strand of hair from his face. “But don’t think you’re off the hook just yet.”
Ethan grinned, feeling lighter than he had all day. He captured her hand and pressed a kiss to her palm. “I wouldn’t dream of it.”

Summary: There are many things that Sebastyan doesn't like about Detective Rose. Her loyalty to Trystan, for one thing. But the worst part, the most unforgivable offense, is the way she keeps drawing his eye.
A/N: I've officially given up trying to predict how long this will be. Sebastyan is making a mockery of my outline and taking his own sweet time thawing out. Submission to @julychallenge, prompts: vulnerable, confidence.

Predictably, his mother comes to check on him at eight sharp. He knows that she waited until it was more or less acceptable to drop by somebody’s bedroom, but the bags under her eyes tell him that she didn’t get any more sleep than he did. He wonders if she also feels the prickle of anger underlying the grief. Underlying everything.
“Hi Mom. Any…”
Of course, she knows what he’s about to ask. “No. No news.” She raises a hand to his cheek. “How do you feel?”
Like my favorite brother tried to kill me. “Better. You?”
“Me? I’m fine.”
“Mom.”
She sighs. “As fine as I can be, given the circumstances. But don’t you worry about me. Dr. Subotić will be here in a couple of hours. I really wish you’d listened to her when she said you should go to the hospital.”
“I have a cut on my neck, that’s all. The bandages did the job.”
She opens her mouth to protest but stops when she hears another voice.
“Excuse me.” Emma walks up to them. “I didn’t mean to interrupt.”
Before he can answer, his mother barrels on. “Of course you’re not interrupting. Are you here to talk to Sebastyan?”
“That was the plan.” She turned to him. “If you have a minute, that is.”
He avoids her eyes. He let her see too much last night. Too much of what he wants, too much of what he is. Sebastyan doesn’t know how to handle vulnerability under the very best of circumstances. In this case? He wonders if it’s possible to kick her out of the palace. Deport her from the country.
But before he can make an excuse, his mother answers for him. “Of course he has.”
“Mom.”
“She saved your life, Sebastyan.” She turns to Emma. “I’m forever in your debt, Emma. I’ll leave you two alone.”
As his mother walks away, they eye each other. Without the adrenaline of the previous night, it seems that she doesn’t know how to act any more than he does.
“How are you holding up?” She asks finally.
“I’m alive. What are you doing here?”
“I wanted to check on you.” She raises an eyebrow when he crosses his arms. “Is that really so surprising?”
“You’re Trystan’s… friend.” He says, intentionally giving the last word a dubious undertone that he’s no longer sure is merited. But his anger, growing steadily, wants an outlet. And she’s the nearest target.
Her eyes narrow. “Yes, I’m Trystan’s friend. I also saved your life. I’d like to ensure it remains safe.”
“I’m safe, as you can see.” He looks pointedly at the corridor, then back at Emma.
She stays where she is. “Do you always make things more difficult than they have to be?”
His back goes up at that. “Nobody is forcing you to be here.”
“Bas. Come on.”
He freezes. She’s only called him that once, right before…
No. Don’t think about it. Not now.
“Fine. Come in.”
As he holds the door open, Emma gives him a wide berth. By unspoken agreement, it seems that both have decided they were too hyped up on adrenaline to make sensible decisions last night.
“Now. I’ll ask again. What do you want?”
“And again I’ll say, I wanted to check on you.”
“I’m fine.”
She gives him a skeptical look. “Fine.”
“Yes.”
“The morning after almost being murdered by your own brother, you’re fine.”
It takes all his self-control, not all that good to begin with, not to flinch at that. “Yes.”
She makes a frustrated sound. “Look, you don’t have to talk to me. But you should talk to someone.”
Genuinely baffled, he can’t stop the question. “Why do you care?”
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“You barely even know me. I don’t think you particularly like me.”
“Is that a prerequisite to caring about somebody who was almost killed?”
He notes wryly that she didn’t deny not liking him. “It would make it more understandable, yes.”
“For god’s sake. You Thornes are impossible.”
“I repeat, nobody is forcing you to be here.”
“I’m worried about you, okay? Nobody should go through what you went through last night.”
He hears her words, but the sentiment does not compute. “I don’t understand you,” he says honestly.
“Back at you.” She runs a hand through her hair. “I guess I’ll leave you to it.”
When her hand is on the doorknob, his conscience prickles. “Wait. I’m… sorry about last night.”
She looks at him oddly. “What do you have to be sorry about?”
“I shouldn’t have…” He clears his throat. “I shouldn’t have done what I did.”
“You were reacting to the adrenaline. I get it.” She looks away. “I got carried away. I should have known better.”
He considers telling her he isn’t sorry it happened. But she’s right in one respect: he was reacting to the adrenaline. Whatever his feelings for her, and God, he isn’t ready to think about that, he wouldn’t have kissed her last night if he had not been reeling from the shock of Vasili’s attack. So instead, he says, “You were reacting to the adrenaline too.”
Their eyes meet. A current of understanding passes between them. “Take care of yourself, Sebastyan.”
“I will.”
Once she’s gone, he’s not sure whether his predominant emotion is relief or regret.
It happens at noon.
Dr. Subotić has just examined the wound and pronounced it to be coming along nicely when there’s a knock on his bedroom door. His mother opens it to find Marguerite, her face tear-stained, on the other side.
He knows at once.
“They caught him. Is he…?”
“Alive?” Her expression hardens. “Oh yes. Enough that he almost killed Lydea.”
He shoots out of the bed where he’s sitting. “Is she all right?”
“She will be. She’ll need stitches, but I think the only reason he’s still alive is that she couldn’t bring herself to kill him.”
A strangled noise draws both of their attention to their mother. Eveline stands stock still, a hand pressed to her heart and the other to her mouth. Sebastyan and Marguerite exchange glances before making their way to her.
“Let’s go, Mom,” she says gently. “You should sit down.”
“Vasili…”
“I know.”
“He will…”
“Yes.”
She raises teary eyes to them. “How can we ever get past this?”
Sebastyan takes a deep breath. “I don’t know.”
But they’ll have to. Even as he later listens to his father and the Queen inform the family of what’s to come, he knows they will have to find a way to move on with their lives.
Somehow.
The following week is too full of duties to take much of a breath. Queen Viktoria is determined to make an example of his brother, which means that he as Vasili’s intended victim is being paraded around podiums and cameras.
He isn’t sure he minds. He wants Vasili to pay for what he did to Juliana and Nadja. What he did to him.
He’s enjoying a rare respite from these new responsibilities when a knock comes on the door of his suite. His father’s voice calls from the other side. “Sebastyan?”
He strides to open it. “Yes, Father.”
“May I come in?”
He has aged, Sebastyan thinks as he steps back. King Maksim still carries himself with his habitual royal bearing, but there are traces of grief in his eyes and wrinkles around his mouth that weren’t there before his son’s true nature came to light. “What is it?”
“The lavender festival starts tomorrow.”
“I remember.”
“Vasili was meant to give the opening speech. That obviously won’t be happening now.”
“Are you taking over? Or the queen?”
“Neither. Viktoria and I talked about it, and we both agree you should be the one to give that speech.”
That’s… unexpected. “I would have thought you wouldn’t want the festival to be eclipsed by what happened.”
“I fear that is unavoidable, son. But there is a way to turn it to our advantage.” He pauses. “Your approval ratings have risen by a staggering 27% since the attack. If people see you thriving, taking charge, it will give the festival a much-needed feel of triumph. Of overcoming difficulties. You know what a bad year the lavender fields have had.”
“That’s not my area.”
“Sebastyan.”
“All right, yes. I know.” He pauses. “You really think it’ll help?”
“I do.”
“I assume you already have the speech written.”
Maksim hands him a folded sheet of paper, the barest hint of a smile on his face. “Indeed.”
“We’re Drakovians,” Sebastyan says at the end of his speech, ignoring the flash of the cameras. He’s memorized the entire thing, practiced it, until it looks like it comes from his heart rather than his father’s personal speechwriter. “We rise strong, no matter the setbacks. We bloom, regardless of the climate.”
Thundering applause rings out, drowning out his last words. All it took for people to pay attention, he thinks darkly, was almost being murdered by his brother.
He steps down from the podium, ready to shake some hands and begin the interminable process of being the Token Royal in Attendance, when he sees Emma standing at the back. Unable to free himself quickly enough, he loses sight of her as she becomes lost in the throng of people.
What in the world is she doing here?
It takes him thirty minutes to shed the last noble and politician vying for his attention, his impatience ever more poorly concealed. A quick promise to be right back finally sets him free to pursue his quarry.
He isn’t sure why he’s looking for her. What he’s hoping to achieve. He just knows he needs to see her.
He does at the end, close to the center of the field. She stands amid lavender, alone, looking like… his initial thought is something out of a fairytale, with her flowing hair and light green eyes, but he knows that’s all wrong. No fairytale he’s ever read would suit her worn jeans and leather jacket. But she feels like something out of a fairytale, and for once, he cannot find the words to explain why.
She nods at him when he approaches her.
“Sebastyan. I didn’t know you were making a speech.”
“Vasili was meant to give it, but.” He shakes his head. “You can imagine how that would be inconvenient now. You know, you don’t strike me as the nature type.”
She blows out a breath. “I’m not, ordinarily. But…”
He waits.
“Lavender was my father’s favorite plant.”
He stands at attention at this rare glimpse of Emma’s history. It strikes him now how hungry he is to hear about it. “Is it yours?”
“Maybe? I don’t care about plants that much, but… This one brings good memories.”
“Your father… I know he was killed.”
She looks straight ahead. “Yeah. Fifteen years ago, when I was thirteen. He was stabbed in front of me.”
“Emma.” It makes his heart ache. “I’m sorry.”
“Me too.” She dusts herself off and walks past him. “Well, Prince Sebastyan. I imagine you have elbows to rub, and I’m about peopled out. See you at the palace.”
“Actually…” He doesn’t let himself think before the words are out of his mouth. “Do you want some coffee?”
She looks around. “Here?”
“Well, I would take you to the country club, but…” His lips twitch when she rolls her eyes. “Precisely. There is a café to the southeast edge of the field. There are private rooms.”
“Right. I’m not an expert in tabloids, but I can imagine what they’ll make of Prince Sebastyan disappearing into a private room with a woman.”
“They know you saved my life. Some people may assume romance, but others will simply chalk it up to gratitude.”
Emma blows out a breath. “What the hell. I could use some coffee.”
“You know, in my world, cafés don’t look like something taken out of Versailles.”
Sebastyan shrugs disdainfully. “It’s trying to be rococo. Terribly tacky if you ask me.”
“Let’s hope this room really is private, or the next tabloid headlines will be all about how the golden prince looks down his nose at Drakovian agriculture.”
“I enjoy the fields and appreciate the farm.”
“But not the café?”
“This is Drakovia. We have our own traditional architecture. No need to borrow from the French.”
“You really love this country, don’t you?”
“It’s home,” he says simply. “Besides, building to a rococo style in the 21st century is ridiculous.”
“Oh, I agree. I’m just surprised to hear you say it.”
“I thought last week proved that you don’t know me as well as you thought.”
She winces. “I deserve that.”
“No.” Annoyed with himself, he rubs a hand over his face. “You were doing your job. Even I must admit I was the most likely suspect.”
“I still should have been more careful,” she says. “God, I didn’t even go through all the rooms the night of Nadja’s murder. We could’ve ended it then and there if only we’d searched the suite right next to Lydea’s.”
“Nothing we can do about that now.”
“No.” She faces him. “But I apologize. My mistake almost cost you your life.”
Curious, he sits and gestures at the loveseat across from his. “Is that what the morning after the attack was about? Guilt?”
“No. Like I already told you, repeatedly, I just wanted to make sure you were okay.” She raises her hands, palms up. “God.”
“All right, I’m sorry. And I’m lagging on my duties as host. What would you like?”
“Just coffee. One sugar.”
He nods, presses an intercom button and orders a coffee and an herbal tea.
“Not one for caffeine?”
“Not in the afternoon.” He looks at her. “I’ve been remiss in thanking you.”
“No, you haven’t. As we’ve established, I made a mess of the investigation.”
“You still saved my life.” He looks out the window, to the sprawling fields of lavender. “And all I did the day after was snap at you.”
“Somebody you loved and trusted tried to kill you. It’s a wonder all you did was snap at a near-stranger.”
Their eyes meet. He wonders if they’re thinking the same thing: that they’re more than near-strangers to each other now.
And because of that, or maybe because the scent of lavender is wafting in through the open window and the slant of the sun falls on Emma’s face in the most intriguing manner, he hears himself talking. “I can’t get over it.”
“You were betrayed in the most horrific of ways. Of course you’re not going to just get over it.”
“I should.”
“What you should do,” she pauses when the door opens, and a uniformed waiter brings their beverages. When he leaves, she turns to him again. “What you should do is cut yourself some slack. Maybe accept you’re a mere mortal like the rest of us.”
“Hilarious.”
“I mean it. It’s obvious you hate not being in control. But take it from me, it’s impossible to control everything.”
He looks at her closely. “Are you talking about your father’s death?”
“What else?” She blows out a breath. “My mother’s abandonment too. For the longest time, I tried to be in control of every one of my circumstances. All trying accomplished was give me anxiety.”
“How did you overcome it?”
“I didn’t. I control my anxiety now instead of the other way around. But I’ve accepted that I’m always going to deal it.”
He sucks in a breath. This is not what he wants to hear. “I can’t spend the rest of my life too afraid to turn my back on a door.”
“I don’t think you will. But it’s only been a few days, Sebastyan. You’ve got to give yourself time. Somebody to talk to wouldn’t hurt, either.”
“No.” He dismisses the idea of therapy without blinking. “It’s too risky. No matter how discreet a therapist may be, somebody around them can always be bought.”
“You know this world better than I do. But…”
“It’s not up for debate.”
“Suit yourself.” She sips her coffee. “God, this is good.”
“Drakovian coffee is the best.”
“This country may have its redeeming qualities after all.”
“Says the American.”
“Hey, you love your country, I love mine. That doesn’t mean I can’t see its faults. Can you say the same?”
He gives her a look. “I’ve spent my entire adult life trying to fix one of its faults.”
“Trying to make royal children even more privileged?”
“Trying to eradicate the notion of legitimate and illegitimate children.” He rolls his eyes. “Which apparently is still up for debate in 2023.”
“I’ll give you that one. Still, you have to admit it’s a rather self-centered cause.”
“You think that’s all I do?”
“Isn’t it?”
“Of course not. I’ve been working on improving our immigration laws. Make them fairer and more welcoming. I’ve also helped draft a proposal so that children from underprivileged backgrounds get access to IT education.” He raises a single eyebrow when her eyes widen. “Not what you were expecting, is it?”
She tilts her head. “I guess you were right. I really don’t know you half as well as I thought I did.”
“Oh, you know me better than most.” When their eyes meet, he refuses to look away. “Considering.”
Emma puts her cup on the table. “I thought we agreed that was a mistake.”
“We agreed we wouldn’t have done it under other circumstances. Not quite the same thing.”
“We just established that I don’t know you.”
“Nor I you.”
“Well then…”
“I do know you’re smart. And brave. And sarcastic to the point it becomes annoying.”
“Look who’s talking. The sarcasm, I mean.” She adds belatedly.
“Regardless, I’ve kissed women I knew a great deal less.”
“I don’t imagine any of those women tried to have you arrested.”
He makes a you got me there gesture. “True.”
“Speaking of the Act, what are you going to do about it now?”
The non-sequitur makes him blink. She’s nervous, he realizes. He didn’t know she had it in her to be nervous. And what does it say, that she’s nervous because of him?
Still, he lets it go. For now. “That’s dead and done.”
“What?” Surprised, she stares at him. “I would have thought you’d have more support from Parliament now.”
“You thought wrong. I have more support from the people. Nobody in Parliament wants to pass an Act that would have put a cold-blooded murderer on the throne.”
“They can’t blame you for what Vasili did.”
“They can and do.”
“That’s ridiculous.”
“Yes, well, Drakovian Parliament isn’t known for making sense. All they see is an illegitimate royal who committed murder to get to the throne. They’re going to ensure that no other illegitimate royal get the chance.”
“I’m starting to understand the notes on your ledger.”
“Thank you,” he shoots back, sarcasm dripping from his words. “It’s so comforting to know that you approve.” He’s taken aback when he sees that she’s smiling. “What?”
“Nothing. I’m just… starting to understand something Marguerite once said, is all.”
His eyes soften. “Unlike Parliament, Mags does make sense. Most of the time.”
“You’ve made up, haven’t you?” She lifts a hand. “Save your breath and don’t tell me it’s none of my business. Mags is my friend.”
“Then you can ask her.”
“I’m asking you.”
“Yes, we made up. Amazing how finding out your brother is a murderer can strengthen a bond.”
“Silver lining.”
“I suppose it is.” He gestures to the open window. “I have to get back out there. Do you need a ride?”
“No, I took the bus.”
“You need a ride. Wait here. I’ll be ready to leave in an hour or so.”
Emma makes an amused sound. “I can take care of myself, Your Highness. And I’m not hanging around in Marie Antoinette’s sitting room until you feel like fetching me.”
“That’s not what I…”
“See you at the Palace.”
When she walks out, Sebastyan rolls his eyes. He rejoins the people outside, unaware of the sudden skip to his step.
Thank you, Nonny, for this ask. This worked out perfectly because Ethan x Kaycee celebrated their first wedding anniversary - the "paper" anniversary. I hope you enjoy this little drabble!
Story: Open Heart (Post Series)
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x Kaycee MacClennan (F!MC)
Rating: Teen
Words: 845
Summary: Ethan doesn't get the logic behind the "paper" anniversary, but as they celebrate a special day, he may have something up his sleeve.
A/N: Participating in @julychallenge Pink: Romance & Love
Ethan groaned as the first beams of sunlight streamed through the window of their beach home; shifting under the covers, he reached around, searching the bed for his missing wife. Typically, he’d be the first one up, attempting to lure the love of his life out from under the covers with the aroma of her favorite breakfast cooking on the stove. A Herculean task, at best. But even when being coaxed with the things she loved most... him and delicious food... she'd beg for just a little more precious sleep. He had no doubt of Kaycee’s love for him, but if she were forced to choose between him and sleep? He wasn’t confident that he’d be the final victor.
That's what made today's narrative so unusual. Kaycee was already up and about, bustling with the energy of a morning person that they both knew she was not. He heard her climbing the stairs, humming a song he knew well enough to place as belonging to Taylor Swift but not well enough to determine the song. She lept into the room with a grin brighter than the morning sun.
“Good morning, gorgeous!” she chirped, leaning over to kiss his forehead.
“Good morning," he groggily replied. "Why are you so cheerful at the crack of dawn? While we’re on vacation, no less?”
Kaycee giggled and pulled the comforter down, tossing pink heart-shaped confetti over his bare torso with a playful giggle.
“Because it’s our anniversary!” She jumped onto the bed and threw her arms around him as he sat up."
“Mmmhhh,” he groaned, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. “Can we spend the day here? In bed?” His fingers reached up and played with the hem of her shirt. "I know how to make it very fun.”
“I know for a fact that you do!” she smiled, placing another peck on his cheek. “And we’ll get to that, I promise! But we have other things to do first.”
“Like you throwing confetti at me?” he grinned.
“Paper confetti,” she emphasized. “Because it’s our paper anniversary.”
Ethan rolled his eyes, unable to hide his disdain. “Our paper anniversary. Who comes up with this nonsense? Hallmark? So they can sell more paper cards?"
"Maybe," she shrugged. "It's just a tradition, Ethan! It symbolizes a new beginning—the fragility of a new marriage. I think it’s sweet.”
“Well, first, I don't think of our marriage as fragile, and second, paper? Paper has no value. What’s next cardboard? Perhaps oak tag?”
“It’s not about the material, Ethan. It’s about what it represents. There are plenty of ways to make it special.”
“Like writing each other love notes?” he teased.
“As a matter of fact,” she said, rushing to the dresser and returning with a red envelope in hand. “An anniversary card for you!”
But this time, it was Ethan's turn to surprise her. Reaching into the drawer of his nightstand, he pulled out a small pink envelope of his own and a small bouquet of paper flowers. Kaycee gasped, kicking her feet with delight as he handed them to her.
“Ethan!” she beamed. “When did you... how.... this is adorable!”
“I’ve been working on it for weeks. Admittedly, I needed to call Sienan in for assistance after a miserable first attempt." He stopped to watch his wife, simply glowing as she gazed at the bouquet in her hand, lovingly tracing the edges of each flower and leaf with her fingers. “I know it looks like a third-grader made it, but without her help, I wouldn't have surpassed pre-school.”
“Stop it!” Kaycee insisted, leaning over for a kiss. “I love this! I can’t believe you made this for me.”
“I know I’m not normally a mushy guy...”
“No! You? Who is spreading such malicious lies!” Kaycee teased as Ethan raised an eyebrow.
“Are you done?”
Kaycee shrugged with a delicate smile on her lips. “Perhaps?”
Ethan cleared his throat and pulled her close under his arm. “I may not be a romantic at heart, but it’s our anniversary. I can't believe it's been one year since the second best day of my life.”
"Second best?" She frowned. "And what's the first?"
"Easy. The day you walked into Edenbrook's lobby and turned my world upside down - in the best possible way."
“Aww, Ethan!” Kaycee beamed.
“When I realized we’d be spending it here, the same place we said our vows a year ago, I knew you’d need a bouquet, so..."
“I would,” she smiled. “I mean, I love it, but why do I need it?"
Ethan glanced at the clock. “In nine hours, it will be exactly one year since we said our vows on this beach... and I thought we could repeat them later today, just the two of us. That is if you’re still willing to say them again after being saddled with me for a year!”
“Ethan,” she said, lovingly placing her paper bouquet to the side for protection before jumping on top of him and peppering him with dozens of little kisses. “Are you kidding me? I love you and want you more with each passing day. This is forever, hon!”
“Then it's a good thing our insurance has good mental health benefits,” he teased, rolling Kaycee onto her side. "I'm grateful you're a little crazy."
"Mmm-hmm. I'm crazy about you! Now, did you mention something about spending the morning in bed with me? Something about making it fun?"
"You better believe it," he grinned, pulling her t-shirt over her head and trailing soft kisses down her neck. "Challenge accepted. Happy Anniversary, Kaycee. I love you to the paper moon and back.”
A/N 2: I originally named this Paper Bouquet - but that gave too much away. But this is the way I imagine the bouquet to look:
Jun: The Bodyguard
I'm really enjoying The Deadliest Game. Though I'm not at all surprised because it is my favorite story type —— a group of strangers are confined in a space together for some time with no way out and there's an apparent murder (or two... or ten).
Anyway, I thought I was going to be torn between Dante and Farah, but I just love Jun now. 😍
Enjoy this geometric art of Jun. It's not my favorite, but here it is anyway. It has 252 shapes/layers.
Hello Elsa, it is I... Your Summer Secret Pal and I came to present you your gift. I hope you enjoy it. I never wrote anything for Tobias, so I really wish it's good and that you like it. Sweet Morning (F!MC×Tobias) - Open Heart
He grunted, woken up by being pushed. Tobias discovered his girlfriend, Casey almost pushing him out of bed.
"Casey."
The man hugged her tightly to prevent her from making any more nocturnal moves and then started to close his eyes to fall asleep as well with his arm over her.
After a while, he awakened again, with her still asleep in his arms. She hasn't moved an inch at all. He smiled and kissed her forehead again, then watched her peacefully asleep while running a hand through her blonde braids. Tobias continued to caress her hair until he heard the alarm clock ringing on the nightstand. He groaned and immediately turned it off before focusing back on his lover.
"Hey... Case, wake up. My sleepyhead." Tobias whispered while shaking her a little.
"Tobias, lemme sleep.", she requested half-asleep.
Tobias laughed, sighed and then hugged her, burying his face in her neck.
"Stop complaining, Casey. You were the one who pushed me off the bed."
He started kissing her neck to tease her a little.
"Hey... wake up, my Casey. Wake up, dear."
He continued to kiss her neck, now with a few slight bites on it.
"Why?"
"Because it's time to get up. It's already morning.", he informed while still teasing her neck with small kisses and bites.
"Nooooo, I'm tired."
"Oh, you lazy thing..."
Suddenly Tobias Carrick grabbed her and put her on top of him, looking at her, a slight smirk on his face
"Hey, put me back!!"
"Mmm... Nope.", he answered in an amused tone, then grabbed her waist to keep her in place while looking up at her. He gave his lover a smug smile.
"Tobi, just five minutes."
"No, no more sleep."
He grabbed her by the waist and flipped them over so that she was under him, keeping her pinned with his body.
"Wake up and don't make me do something to you."
"Okay, fine. You win.", she rolled her eyes as she accepted his victory. His charm convinced her again.
"Good, now give me a good morning kiss."
"Oh no, cuz you woke me up."
"What??! Oh, come on... Please?", Tobias begged while he ran a fingertip over her neck, then gently ram it down to her collarbone. He gave her a puppy-eye look to try to convince her. Then she answered.
"Honey, why are you so cute?"
He grinned and laughed after hearing her respond.
"I'm cute? Not as cute as you are. Don't you want to give your partner his good morning kiss?"
"Oh, shut up.", she joked before crashing her lips on his for a passionate kiss. Casey loved his taste as much as he loved hers. So they decided to stay in bed and make love till afternoon.
Tobias × Casey Moodboard
Important note: I sent you an ask about your characters as Hogwarts Houses because I had another gift idea for you, but it sadly didn't get answered yet in time. Sorry, I had to cancel then. I don't have time anymore
Hi There!
First, thanks so much for your lovely gift! Oh my, the fic captures their playfulness and constant flirtation - as well as Casey's absolute hatred of waking up from a good sleep! lol As for them staying in bed until noon to make love, uhm TOTALLY them. lol So this was perfect! Thank you!
Also, I love the moodboard! The quote had me chuckling! And I love the little hands/heart medical style!
Thanks so much for your kindness & the care you put into this!
I'm so sorry I was late answering this. Like I told you, I was away from home this weekend, and the internet was very spotty where I was! I'm also sorry for not answering the Hogwarts ask. To be honest, I was only moderately into HP back when it was popular, so I would have had to reeducate myself! lol But this was perfect! Thanks so much!

"You... You want to be a Nighthunter, rook??!". Nik asked his girlfriend, Alex again in case he misunderstood and heard wrong. But she was serious and confessed that she wanted to become a nighthunter too. Just like Nik.
"Well, it sounds fun and cool. I get to wear cool leather outfits like a heroine and..."
"What the hell?!! A nighthunter?? Have you lost your goddamn mind?!! This is too dangerous.", he almost screamed till the top of his lungs.
"I know, but I can handle it. I have the two best nighthunters in town who'll teach me everything. You and Katherine. Also, I was the one who saved your butt several times, rescued you from Octavia and her pack who were after us, fought ghosts on a ship, and even succeeded in punching one. I defeated Thomas his wraith, remember? Should I also mention the super-strength and the super-speed I gained after... well... after I died? Come on, please, please, pleeease!!"
"Still, it's too dangerous..."
"But I can do this, I learned martial arts when I was a child. I promise to train hard and listen to you."
"When have you ever even listened to me? You're always so stubborn, rook. Look, it's not just about being skilled. The main thing is that you have to be brave and ready to risk your life without thinking twice."
"Risk my life? Really?", she asked and he nodded before continuing his lecture.
"Some of my colleagues have even died because of one tiny mistake or anything unexpected. And there was even a time when I... I... almost died. I don't know how the hell. Sometimes I seriously wonder how I even make it out in one piece while the ones dear to me...", he stopped speaking, looking at you with pain in his eyes.
"Oh, Nik..."
"I know what you're gonna say, but baby, this has been my life for years. I already gave it a thought and I can't walk away from it so easily."
"Then can't I support you in the hunt and help you?"
"Wait a minute, did you wanna be my sidekick or something like that?", he asked with wide eyes.
"I could do that. Remember how many times I helped you in your small missions? Like capturing that ghost in a vial or defeating that vampire feral near the graveyard?"
"Yeah, I do. You did it some times well. And I must admit you did well, but... Baby, I want you to know that it is dangerous. You can get hurt very easily. Those were just easy little tasks. There's so much more and I don't want you to be in harm's way for the sake of just helping me."
"But Nik, I don't want you to get in danger. Alone you're strong, but together we'll be unstoppable[*], Nik.", she still tried to convince. Nik gently grabbed both of her hands and kissed them before continuing.
[*]=Quote from The Shadowhunters used
"Hey, I appreciate that you are concerned for my safety, but it's part of my work. And as I said, you would be in danger as well. Why do you wanna risk it so much? Why do you want to become a Nighthunter so much, rook? Why...?"
"For you. To be more with you and help you", she confessed which surprised him. They got both silent and only stared at each other for a moment until he dared to answer.
"Are you sure that's the reason? I'm a bit concerned you're just trying to impress me or something. Don't you prefer a safer life with me instead of hunting evil creatures and risking your life to protect others? Because honestly speaking... I don't want you to put yourself in harm's way just for me."
"Nik, I know. I... I'm sorry. I...", she got interrupted as he placed his index finger on her rosy lips to silence her. Pulling her to himself, he gently whispered before kissing her forehead.
"Shhhh. No, don't say sorry, dear. It just shows me that I've found truly my soul mate, my partner for life, who's strong and who's also not afraid of the unknown. I really admire you, babe."
"Nik, don't you ever dare to die or get injured. I need you in my life", she begged, which made his heart start beating rapidly in his chest.
"I'll do my best not to get hurt, for you, my sweet, brave one.", Nik reassured before passionately kissing her.
The following day, Nik woke up and looked at the clock. It was 11 AM.
He slowly stretched himself and sat on the edge of the bed. Smiling as he discovered his lover, Alex peacefully sleeping next to him.
Then the young man stretched himself once again, got dressed to start his work as a nighthunter again. It's a beautiful night with stars shining across the sky. He walked along a quiet street until he was in front of an old abandoned house. As he entered, the place was filled with dust, rubble and many cobwebs. The smell of decay is everywhere. It's a bit frightening.
"Nik, dear!!! I'm here to help!! Wait for meeee!!", a familar voice shouted.
The hunter turned around and couldn't believe that his girlfriend followed him the whole way. "Damn, what the hell are you doing here? I told you I would do this alone!"
"I helped you a lot of times. We're a team, remember?"
"Yes, my stubborn rook, and I know you did it out of sheer desire to help me by my side. I really appreciate that, but still..."
"Let's find clues!! What's the case?", she curiously asked and got excited. Nik put his hands on her shoulders to attract her attention.
"As I've told you, this job is risky. Just because you helped me sometimes, that's no guarantee that nothing can ever happen. But now that you're already here, you just gotta promise me to stay safe no matter what happens and that the next time, you won't intervene in any dangerous situation. Okay, babe? I just can't stand the thought of you getting hurt..."
"But Nik... I... Okay, fine.", she disappointedly replied and looked away which hurt him.
"Hey there, I appreciate everything you do for me. You're my strong girl. But please don't take my concern as me being overprotective or something like that. Because I just can't stand the thought of losing you. I would never recover emotionally from a thing like that."
"But I won't forgive myself if... Okay, Nik. Fine, sorry. I'm leaving then as you wish. Just stay safe. For me."
Before she could turn away and leave, he quickly grabbed Alex and hugged her tightly, not letting his girlfriend go.
"Please don't go now... I didn't mean it like that, rook. Darn, I'm sorry. You mean so much to me. And you always worry me when I'm not with you. I think that you're really brave, and that's one of the many things I love about you. But at the same time this job of mine is very risky...", he stared directly into her eyes while explaining. After a pause, he continued then.
"Look... Promise me you won't take any unnecessary risks or try to help me fight any creatures while I'm gone. On the one hand, you should go home, out of danger. But on the other hand, I need you by my side. Because you're all I think about when I'm out hunting and well... I... I got used to having you by my side. I... I don't know, but since you're here now, I'd rather want you to be near me. Just stay safe and no risks. You'll need to stay close to me. We may even come across something dangerous and unexpected, I'm warning you that because I don't want you to be surprised..."
She nodded and both went deeper inside the building. Darker and darker, they found themselves in the middle of a room filled with dust and rubble. Hearing the creaking of wood and the sounds of insects disgusted Alex. Nik began to move carefully from one room to another, pulling Alex behind him and holding her close, protecting her. As they got closer, they saw the shape of a human lying on the ground. Lying on the stomach. The body covered with many scars and bruises. The room was dimly lit and dirty, covered with a thick layer of dust. Full of rubbish everywhere, including dead animal bodies and old furniture.
"Oh myyyy...", she gasped, covered her eyes and looked away. Nik's voice is very worried.
"Stay by me, don't move, okay?", he worriedly whispered and also panicked after the sight of a dead body.
Wearing rubber gloves, which were stashed in his backpack, he slowly moved towards the body that lay on the ground. Nik kneeled down for a closer look. Carefully examined the body. One of the eyes seems to be missing, and a few fingers as well. The head was in a really bad state like it was smashed against the ground and stomped on. He couldn't see the face very well because it was all covered with blood and dirt.
"What the hell happened to this guy?", the nighthunter was worried.
"That's the case I'm already working on, Mister Ryder.", a female voice appeared. A young lady appeared just around the corner, followed by a handsome guy.
"You know my name? Who are you? What connection do you have with this dead body? A murderer?", Nik got serious and alert. The nighthunter protectively pulled his girlfriend, Alex behind him to cover her.
"Nik, that's..."
"Don't worry, I'll protect you. Stay close to me, rook."
"But Nik, that's..."
"And who the hell are you two?", Nik asked the two strangers and raised his eyebrow.
"Wait, you don't know me?! What world do you live in.", the mysterious man chuckled.
"Just. Answer. My questions.", the nighthunter commanded.
"Private Detective, Lyra Rose. And that's my partner, Try..."
"Trystan Thorne!!!!!! Oh my, the handsome Crown Prince of Drakovia is standing right in front of me!! I think I'm about to faint.", Alex excitedly squeaked which irritated Nik a bit. It looked like her legs couldn't carry her anymore as her eyes were only on the prince, so Nik quickly grabbed her to prevent her from falling.
"Rook, you know that guy? And did you just call him handsome?", he asked without hiding his sudden jealousy.
"Yes, she did.", the prince winked at Nik.
"Mister Ryder, I'm a Private Detective and informed about anything and anyone. I have my sources and this murder case is mine. I'll handle this.", the sleek woman showed them her card and decided to handle the case on her own. With her handsome partner, Trystan.
"But..."
"Mister, I'm already working on this case, so you better not intervene. Better leave before you get in trouble.", Lyra got angry and raised her voice.
After a short silence, Nik gave in.
"Let's get outta of here, rook.", he sighed and grabbed her hand to leave.
As they left the area, Alex nervously spoke.
"I didn't know that nighthunters investigate dead bodies. That's scary. Why didn't you handle the case? Should they even..."
That's the problem, we don't know if this is something supernatural or not. It can only happen if we go to the police or let the authorities. This guy is so butchered that even if this isn't the work of vampires or demons, I think the police should know. Seems like that Detective knew what she was doing. Let's go to the police anyway. It's the right thing to do and I have my valuable connections there."
After a visit to the police station, Nik and Alex were on their way home. The police would start investigating as fast as possible and find the person or being responsible for all this.
The couple started walking in silence. After a short moment, Nik wrapped his arm around her while both walked. He looked down at her and smiled at her to lighten up her mood.
"Are you feeling better now, honey? You didn't seem so okay when we first got to the police station... Well until that prince appeared."
"Do I sense jealousy here? I was just thinking, Nik... Maybe being a nighthunter isn't something for me. Seems very stressful. And being involved with the police in some cases... I mean, I still can't stop thinking about that human dead body! I want to scream and throw up. I... I... It's not the first time I've seen bloodshed and death, but... I don't want to get any nightmares after regularly seeing this. It's horrible to experience something like this, especially when it's part of the job. And here I thought nighthunters were just hunting monsters, wearing sexy leather, and having cool gadgets. How can you even handle this, Nik?", she confessed in a shaky voice.
"I admit it's hard, but... I'll somehow manage. The past is what makes you today, I guess. And my past... This is my life now. This is the life of a nighthunter. This is the hunt."

"Eeeeeekkkk, Nik!!!", Alex excitedly squeaked in the bedroom. She quickly rushed to the livingroom of Nik's apartment where her boyfriend was seated and silently drinking coffee while reading a book.
"You seem excited, rook.", he looked up to her and chuckled.
"Ooooh, Nik. My love. My life. My everything... You would do anything for me, right?", she watched the blonde with pleading eyes and innocently smiled at him which made him a bit worry now.
"Uhhh, love you too. Everything okay?"
"Oh, yes. Yes, dearie.", she sat next to him on the white couch and moved a little closer towards him which made his cheeks turn softly pink.
"That's how I like it. You and me, rook.", he smiled and gently wrapped his strong arm around her waist and pulled her closer. Her hands lightly rested on his chest as she gazed up to him. Then she spoke again in a bit serious tone.
"I love you, Nik. You're my everything. You're handsome, sweet, strong, loyal, caring, honest and would never leave my side.", she wispered in his ear which made his heart flutter.
"Always, love. Always. I'll always be there for you and never leave your side. Never. Not like last year, rook. I won't tell you to leave me anymore and I won't abandon you. Never. You were always more than a job to me. Now you're more. My everything. My true love. I will never hurt your feelings anymore. I swear.", he confessed and took her hands in his while she rested her head on his broad shoulder.
"I know. Thanks Nik."
"Always, sweetheart."
"So, Niiiiiiik?"
"Yeah?"
"You would do anything for me, right?", she mischevously grinned.
Her question surprised him, so he thought to to answer it carefully. He was on high alert. His sudden silence made Alex ask the question again.
"Nik, I asked you something. You would do anything for me, hmm? You would love me no matter what happens right?"
"Alex, what did you do now?"
"Huh?", she got surprised by his sudden question.
"I'm asking what did you do now??!", he got more serious and almost glared at her.
"What?! I didn't do anything?", she almost panicked.
"Spill it, rook. What dumb thing did you do this time?", Nik raised his eyebrow.
"Nothing, really!! I don't do dumb things, Nik!! Besides, I just wanted to invite you. Do you want to go to the cinema with me tonight, Nik? Pleeease?", she pleased with her best puppy eyes she could create.
"Ohhh... Like a date?"
"Yeah, a date. So what do you say?"
"I would never disagree a romantic date with my beloved girlfriend.", Nik's mood lightened and his eyes sparkled mischevously with joy.
"Thanks, Nik.", she planted a sweet kiss quickly before standing up.
"Where are ya' headin'? I want to cuddle with you, rookie."
"Me too, Nik. As much I like to continue our cuddle session, but we have to go shopping now.", she excitedly squeaked and began to twirl around the room until Nik stood up and grabbed her.
"Hey energetic, little rookie... Why the sudden plan for shopping?", he chuckled.
"Because we're a couple and need to fit the dresscode for the movie. I already have a lot pink clothes to wear, but you... Not even a single one, Nik."
"Wait, what???!!! A dresscode and PINK??!!! Hell no, definitly not. And there is no such dresscode for a movie, rook. Forget it!! Not even a single bit of that horrible color, rook. I rather die than... What kind of movie is that anyway??!!", Nik panicked and took a few steps backwards while her girlfriend tried to get closer.
"Nik, relax. We're going to watch the new Barbie movie tonight? Both wearing pink. We'll be like Barbie and Ken.", she softly spoke while trying to calm down her boyfriend.
"Noooo... Over my dead body, rook!!! I'm sorry, but I won't", he panicked.
"Or blue like Ken? But Nik... You said you wouldn't disagree on a date with me? Please, Nik. For me?", she tried to her best puppy eyes and sweety looked at him.
"But that's not my taste. How about we watch Oppenheimer instead? Or any other movie? A Fantasy movie? Or a Horror movie, because you look cute when you're scared and begin moving closer towards me?"
"But... but... Barbie. Barbie was my childhood. Barbie - Mariposa. Barbie, the Princess and the Pauper. Barbie, the Swanlake Princess. Or Barbie and the Three Musketeers. These classical fairytales with fairies and princesses. I always dreamed to be a fairy. With Barbie you can become anything.
"Alex, you're somehow already a fairy. A fae. Fae royalty. The future duchess of Lamrian."
"Nik, the movie is not going to be that bad. The trailer and the music's soooo good. There's also a male character. Or are you afraid that people might confuse you with Ken and will after chase you?", she winked.
"Only because I'm a blond haired guy, doesn't make me a Ken. I'm Nik. Oh hey, a blonde braided hairstyle would suit you, rook. You would look totally cute. I can imagine that quite easily [see at the end of this fanfic]. But back to the topic... I love you, but I'm not interested in that movie. Forgive me, my angel.", Nik tried to explain his girlfriend who got a little disappointed, but understood and respected his final decision.
"Fiiine, Nik. Sorry. Now what do I do with my two cinema tickets then? I wanted to surprise you with them, but..."
"I know, rookie. I'm so sorry, but... Hey, why don't invite someone else with you? And I know how eagerly you want to watch the movie, so I won't stop you. Go without me and enjoy tonight, dear. Hmm?", Nik moved closer, cupped her face in his both hands and stared in her eyes with pure affection.
"But who? Hmmm... Luc?"
"Oh no, please not him. He won't stop flirting with you.", the blond quickly disagreed which made Alex giggle.
"Don't worry, he might be busy in his shop. I don't think Katherine would be interested, but... Oh, I know who'll definitly go with me."
"Who?"
"Vera!! She'll definitly join me.", Alex her eyes sparked with joy and she immediately pulled away from Nik, got her phone to text her friend.
Vera's a sweet and amazing friend who always hanged out with her, whether is was shopping, having lunch at a Café or anything else. She'd definitly love to hang out with her. And she wouldn't disagree on wearing pink. Immediately a notification popped up on Alex's phone with Vera's reply.
"Eeeeekkk, she agreed!!! Vera and I are going to watch the movie tonight. She agreed!! Thanks for the suggestion, I love you.", she got more excited and planted a quick kiss on his cheek to thank her boyfriend.
"Sure, no problem. Anything for my rookie. I love it when you smile. Have fun tonight.", he kissed her back.
"Thanks, Nik. I love you sooo much.", she squeaked and immediately went in the bedroom to change her clothes into something more... pink!!
As she finally stepped outside their bedroom back to the livingroom where Nik was waiting, his eyes widen as he saw her in her new outfit.
"Woaaah, you... You look amazing. Damn, pink surprisingly looks good on you.", his cheeks turned softly into the same color like her girlfriend's outfit as he shyly admired her beauty.
Alex was wearing a soft-pink colored and black-laced tank-top and tight, light-blue jeans trousers. Not to forget some pair of pink sneakers which actually was the only item Nik didn't liked about her outfit. But who cares... Nik loves her just the way she is. Her hype and excitement for Barbie just surprised him a bit. Something he definitly didn't expected.
"Thanks, Ken... I mean... Nik.", she winked, trying to tease him and bumped her shoulder against his.
"My naughty girl. Have fun tonight with Vera while watching the new Barbie movie.", he chuckled.
"Did someone say they're going to watch the newest Barbie movie?", a familar voice called out from the hallway, just outside Nik's apartment.
Nik and Alex got curious and moved closer towards the slightly open front door of their apartment. Pushing the door more open, revealed two figures standing infront of them with wide smiles.
"Garrus? Krom? What are you doing here?"
"Yeah, were you guys listening to our conversations?", Nik raised his eyebrow and welcomed them inside.
The four of them went inside the apartment and got seated in the livingroom.
"Darling, you look gorgeous. What a pretty outfit. So pink!", Garrus praised her.
"Yes, you look great."
"Thanks Garrus! Thanks, Krom! I'm going to watch the newest Barbie movie tonight with Vera, so I thought to wear pink.", she explained her idea which got Garrus excited.
"That's a fae-tastic!! Krom and I are going to watch that movie too. And I love that idea. Let's wear pink too, Krom!", he suggested the stone-troll.
"Uhh, sure. Anything for you, Garrus."
"Waiiiit, you two are going to watch the movie tonight too??!! That's great!!! Let the four of us go together then!!", Alex requested and both agreed.
"Great idea!! Nik, you're not joining Alex?"
"Uhh, no Krom. I'm not. You guys enjoy tonight."
Later in the evening, Garrus, Krom, Vera and Alex were standing infront of the cinema house. All of them wearing pink. They went inside, showed their cinema tickets and ushered inside the hall to take their seats. The friends group ready and excited for the movie to start.
"I'm so excited!! And look how many people are here.", Vera gazed around until her eyes landed on the seat next to her where a familar voice greeted them.
"Bon soir, mon amies."
"Luc?? What are you doing here?"
"I'm here just like you. For the movie.", he winked.
"Oh, I didn't expected you to be a fan. You look great.", she shyly confessed and analyzed new shirt. It was a pink, flowery shirt which revealed his chest. Just like the one he usually wears, but more pink.
"I wasn't actually a fan, but I had to understand the hype. So I came. If my favorite people ended up to watch the movie, then it might a fantastique one. C'est vrai?"
"That's a cool thought. Explain that to Nik.", Alex just noticed Luc and began greeting him. Garrus and Krom greeted Luc too.
"Now there are five of us for the movie.", Garrus lightened up.
"Oh, not quite. The hunter is here too. Watching the hoppenheimer movie in the other hall.", Luc informed which gave Alex a huge shock.
"What??!!! Nik's here??!!! I know he hates pink, but... Why did he hid that from me? Why didn't he told that to me?", she got disappointed.
"Nik? My apologies, I wasn't talking about him. I was talking about the lady hunter friend."
"Katherine?"
"Oui, Katherine.", he confirmed which calmed Alex a little bit down. She wouldn't have minded if Nik prefers Oppenheimer movie over Barbie, but not telling his partner and secretly having other plans is something else. Afterall, he told her that he'll stay at home.
"Oh Vera, maybe I was too harsh to Nik. What if he wanted to watch the other movie with me instead and I...? Now he's alone at home.", she asked her best friend for advice.
"Hey, don't worry. He loves you. After the movie is over, why don't you go home and suggest to spend some time with him together? Ask what he wants to do with you."
"Ssssshhh, the movie's starting now!", Krom informed the group. Before everyone got focused on the screen, Alex took the chance and wispered in Vera's ear to thank her for the advice and beeing such a great friend.
"Thanks, Vee."

Kaycee's birthday is July 26th, and I didn't want it to pass by without showing her some love! Of course, she doesn't need me for that! 😉
A Simple Wish
Book: Open Heart (Post Series)
Pairing: Ethan x Kaycee (F!MC)
Rating: Teen
Words: 1,180
Summary: Ethan has the perfect evening planned for Kaycee's birthday; but when everything seems to go wrong, she shows him how everything is just right. (This is all the mushy feels. lol)
A/N: Happy Birthday Kaycee! 🥳🎂🥳
@julychallenge Pink: Love Black: Protection
The sun was already setting, casting a pink glow over the beach house as Ethan fumbled with matches, attempting to light the candles on the patio table. He had meticulously planned this evening for weeks—wanting Kaycee’s birthday to be absolutely perfect. But today, it seemed nothing was going as planned.
He heard the sliding door open, and Kaycee emerged from inside. She was by his side in a second, lovingly wrapping her arms around his waist.
“Need some help?” she asked, her voice full of life.
“No, I’ve got it,” he grumbled, sighing with relief when the stubborn wick finally caught a flame.
Despite Kaycee’s reminders to keep things simple, Ethan had spent all day agonizing over the details for tonight’s dinner, and it had left him quite flustered. He wasn’t sure how he was going to shake it to give her the birthday she deserved, but as happened so often, Kaycee provided a solution to a problem she hadn’t even known existed. It only took one look at her, her smile more brilliant than the setting sun, and Ethan felt his tension begin to melt away.
She turned on the radio – a little surprised when he didn’t gripe about the music she selected– but he wasn’t about to argue with her today. Not only because it was her birthday but because she left him mesmerized; his breath was all but taken away
The way she spun around the wooden deck, singing the lyrics to her favorite songs like a child without a care in the world. Her pretty summer dress fluttered in the breeze as the cascading waves of sunkissed hair swirled all around her. Ethan could hardly remember his name as he watched her—she was everything beautiful and right in his world.
Kaycee blushed when she turned and caught him staring like a lovesick schoolboy. Biting her lip, she tried to think of something to say. “Dinner smells amazing,” was all she could come up with.
“Yes,” Ethan stammered. “I called your mom for the recipe for her...Oh! Shit!” he hollered as he ran inside without another word.
Kaycee followed him into the kitchen – a room she normally did her best to avoid.
"What is it?” she asked. Then looked on as she watched his shoulders slouch, a frown on his handsome face as he pulled the lasagna from the smoky oven just before the alarms began to blare. Kaycee opened the windows without being asked. She may not know how to cook, but she sure knew how to prevent the fire department from showing up.
“Damn it,” Ethan cursed as he tossed the dish he had toiled over all afternoon into the trash.
“It’s OK, baby,” Kaycee reassured, placing her hand protectively on his arm. “Honestly, it looked better than anything I’ve ever made for you.”
Ethan took a deep breath. He wasn’t going to allow this to ruin her day. “Well, we’ll have to make other dinner plans,” he frowned.
“That’s easy!” She beamed, opening the refrigerator door and pulling out a box of leftover pizza.
“Leftover pizza?” He groaned. “Really?”
“Leftover pizza from Palio’s!” She corrected. “You know how much I love it, and it always tastes better the next day.”
“You’re right about that,” he grinned. “And it will go well with the Pinot Noir I have chilling.”
Kaycee gulped as her eyes landed on the bottle of wine, still sitting on the kitchen counter in the direct path of the sun. Ethan followed her line of sight and grimaced. “Damn it!”
“No worries... I like White Zinfindel better, anyway,” she chirped.
“Kaycee,” Ethan sighed, disappointment etched on his face. “I really wanted to make tonight special....”
“Shhh!” she said, placing a finger over his lips, then further silencing him with a kiss. “It will be. Why don’t you set up a blanket on the beach? I’ll heat the pizza, and we can have a picnic?”
“Fine,” he surrendered. She was right; after all, the important part of the day was the time they’d spend together, and he wasn’t going to mess that up. He laid a fluffy blanket out over the sand, and, fortunately, the bouquet of pink roses he bought hadn’t suffered the fate of everything else he touched today.
When Kaycee returned outside, she plopped down beside him, placing her head on his lap. "See," she beamed. "This is beautiful!"
“But how are you going to eat in that position?” He teased.
“Oh, that's easy! You’re going to feed me.”
Ethan chuckled as he folded a slice of pizza and fed it to his love.
“If I would have known you wanted to do this, I would have bought some grapes,” he grinned.
“Mmmm. Now you know what you’ll be doing tomorrow,” she winked.
They talked and took turns feeding each other, and after polishing off the bottle of wine, they snuggled together until the sun had set on the horizon. Ethan was quiet, listening to the sound of waves gently crashing on the shore. But as the silence lingered, his mind was racing with thoughts of all he'd gotten wrong today. Kaycee sensed a change in his mood and quickly sat up to face him.
“Ethan, can I tell you something?” she asked, her eyes searching his.
“Of course,” he replied, hoping she wasn’t too disappointed.
She took his hand and squeed it gently. “This has been the best birthday of my life.”
He stared at her in disbelief. “This birthday’s been your best ever? How shitty have your birthday’s been?”
She shook her head with a laugh. “My birthdays have been pretty amazing, actually. I have many wonderful memories. But this one tops them all because it's just you and me in our favorite place. Don't you know, silly man? That's all I'll ever want."
A slow smile spread across Ethan’s face, as he wondered what he had done to deserve her. “You’re sure about that?” he asked.
“One hundred percent!”
“Then you don’t mind if I eat all of the tiramisu cake I brought from Rosella’s by myself?”
Kaycee sat back, her eyes narrowed. “Listen, don’t get ahead of yourself,” she smiled. “That’s my birthday cake.”
“Yeah,” he smirked, jumping to his feet. “Not if I get to it first.”
Ethan bolted to the door like an impish child as Kaycee stumbled in the sand, laughing hysterically; she managed to be right behind him as he opened the screen door.
“Don’t you dare!” She hollered as he scooped her up in his arms. “Now you’re lucky if I even share it with you at all.”
Without a word, Ethan placed her down gently on their soft, chenille couch, kissing her forehead lovingly before leaving the room, returning moments later with the tiramisu cake in hand, alight with bright sparklers.
“For me?” She teased.
“Only you,” he smiled. “You have to make a wish.”
But as she watched the sparklers slowly fade away, she was at a loss. What could she wish for when she already had so much more than she had ever hoped for?
“Did you make a wish?” Ethan asked, and Kaycee gently smiled.
“Mmm-hmm,” she nodded. “But I can’t tell you what it is; I won't risk it not coming true.”
“That’s understandable,” he grinned, handing her a knife to cut the first slice of cake.
It was a simple wish: for them to spend countless more days together, just like today. And while she never told Ethan what it was, he already knew and he was determined to make her wish come true.
Every time Ainna (@/artbyainna - IG) creates something for me, I say it's my new favorite, but this time, I doubt it will ever be topped!
Last month, I was busy and going through some stuff, so I completely forgot to get a slot with Ainna. Imagine my surprise when she reached out a few days later and said, "a secret someone" got a slot for me. It honestly couldn't have come at a better time. I was so down and this act of kindness lifted my spirits so much. When she said my slot was 7/24, I knew what we were going to do! Casey's "birthday" is 7/26, and this had to come to life. And OMG, I could NOT love it anymore.
When Ainna sent me the final today, I sent a sneak peek to just one person... @lucy-268. Not ten seconds later, I got a message from Ainna saying, "By the way, this was from Kathy (aka Lucy-268)." The coincidence was wild! And given that Kathy & I are total Tobias stans - it was perfect! Kathy was so glad I chose to do Tobias & Casey (naked Tobias at that! lol), and I'm so touched by her generosity & kindness. Thank you SO SO much, my dear friend! You have no idea how much this lifted my spirits when Ainna told me initially and again today. I'm so blessed to have you in my life, and now, we're all blessed with this art! 🥵 Yeah, her birthday is July 26th, but I'm not sitting on this one! Though Casey probably will, but I digress. 😏😏😏 This deserved a little fic - which can be found below. Thank you again, Kathy! You're the best! 🩷🤍🩷🤍

Tobias stood in front of his townhome, a sparkle twinkling in his bright blue eyes as he watched the white stretch limo disappear into the night. Casey popped her head out of the sunroof just moments before, enthusiastically waving and blowing kisses as her friends raucously cheered her on. He was determined to make this birthday special for her, and it looked like his mission was a success.
He stepped back inside and shut the door with a sigh, leaning against it as Bryce approached, placing a freshly made strawberry mojito in his hand.
“Man, did you see her?" He asked. "She looked amazing tonight."
“She sure did,” Bryce agreed, spreading out on the couch with a massive bowl of chips on his lap. “You did good, T. The girls’ night out idea? Legendary! I’d say you’re bound to get it now, but...”
“Yeah,” Tobias chuckled, getting comfortable in his recliner. “I’m not worried about that ever. But I am slightly worried about tonight."
“Tonight? Why?”
“Did you see her? She could give up medicine and be a freaking model. Goddamn, one day, that woman’s going to realize she could do much better than me. Let's hope that night isn't tonight."
Bryce went pale; he rushed over to his friend and placed his hand on his forehead.
“What the hell are you doing?” Tobias asked.
“Checking to see if you had a fever! Since when have you thought there was anyone better than you?”
“Heh,” he chuckled, the corners of his eyes crinkling. “You have a valid point there.”
“I mean, the rest of us always told her she could do better,” Bryce teased. “But she hasn’t listened so far. Now that you’re married with a kid and a cat, I think you’re safe, buddy.”
“You’re right,” Tobias let out a deep breath and clinked his glass against Bryce’s with a grin. “Besides, did you see that limo I got them? Now they’re off for dinner at Contessa, then a VIP table at The Grand... you’re right; I’m the best husband in the freaking world. What do I have to worry about?"
“Aaaand just like that, he’s back!” Bryce grinned, grabbing the remote to flip on the television.
A couple of hours later, as the guys ate pizza and watched mindless TV, Tobias’s phone buzzed. Casey sent him pictures of her and her friends having the time of their lives. Then, a quick message: I'm having so much fun!! I don’t care what anyone says! You’re my favorite husband! I adore you, baby. 😘
“Favorite husband,” Tobias laughed, rapidly texting back: Your ONLY husband, sweetheart! Have fun, baby. I love you.❤️
Bryce laughed with a mouth full of chips. “You are so freaking whipped. Now, what’s the surprise that I’m here to help you with?”
Tobias glanced at his watch. “We still have a little time to chill, but you're going to help me put up a balloon wall.”
Bryce raised a brow. “A... balloon wall?”
“Yeah,” Tobias said, pulling a picture up on his phone. Bryce’s eyes popped.
“That looks... complicated. T, you’re loaded. Couldn't you have just hired someone to do this?”
“Dude... the kit says ages ten and up. We’re seven times that between us. We both managed to graduate med school, right? We’ve got this.”
Two hours later...
Perched precariously on the top rung of a ladder, Tobias carefully balanced a cardboard frame brimming with balloons.
“I’ve got it... I’ve got it! I’ve got it!” he shouted just before the frame slipped from his hands, plummeting onto Bryce, who found himself entangled in the balloons, looking like a large cluster of pink and white grapes.
He glared at his friend as he untangled himself. “T. I think it’s about time that we admit... we absolutely do not have this!”
Surrendering, Tobias climbed down the ladder, cursing under his breath.
“You're right! Now, what the hell do we do? Normally, I’d call Sienna at this point, but....”
“Yeah, no,” Bryce laughed, scrolling through his Instagram feed. “Right about now, she’s five martinis in, and based on this picture... she’s getting a lap dance.”
“A lap dance!” Tobias’s eyes went wide. “From who?”
“Your wife,” Bryce cackled, handing Tobias his phone.
Tobias couldn’t wipe the smile from his face. “Well, I'm glad they're having fun! But we need to call in some help.”
Twenty minutes later, Bryce answered a knock on the door. “Thank God you’re here,” he exclaimed. “We desperately need your help.”
“Your panicked phone call made that abundantly clear," Ethan groaned. “Now, what am I here to fix?"
Stepping into the living room, he saw Tobias sitting defeated in front of a wall of half-covered with balloons.
“Hey, buddy,” Tobias half-smiled, handing him a picture of what the wall was supposed to look like. We need your help.”
“With this?!”
Ethan’s face went blank. He looked from the picture to Tobias, to the wall, and back to the picture again, shaking his head.
“This. You called me for this. What about me has ever given you any indication that I would be of any help with... this.”
“I'm desperate,” Tobias pleaded. “Everyone who could be of any use to me is currently out celebrating with Casey. You’re it, man.”
“I don't know how to do this! How do you think I can help?"
“Look,” Bryce said, placing a hand on Ethan’s shoulder. “Three idiots are better than two; now, let’s get to work.”
“You’re so lucky I love Casey,” he muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose.
Ethan instructed Tobias and Bryce to remove everything from the wall; they were starting from scratch. One hour, ten arguments, and three "confetti incidents" they swore would never be spoken about again later, the balloon wall was perfect!
“There you go!” Tobias said, brimming with pride. “A work of art!”
Ethan shot him a look as he poured a tumbler of Tobias’s most expensive Scotch, a reward for his hard work.
“How long before Casey gets home?” he asked. “I may as well stay to see how she reacts to our handiwork.”
“Oh,” Tobias smiled deviously. “I’m afraid you can’t stay for that.”
“Why not?”
“You won’t like all the... props,” he grinned.
“You don't scare me,” Bryce chimed in, stretching out on the couch. “I put in all this work. I’m waiting.”
“Suit yourself,” Tobias sighed. "But don't say I didn't warn you."
He texted Aurora, knowing she’d be the most coherent member of Casey’s entourage, for an estimated time of arrival. She said they’d be back within 30 minutes, and he asked her to help Casey to the door but warned her not to come in. He then turned to his friends and offered them a final chance.
“You've been warned," he repeated. "Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go make the final preparations.”
The two men were engrossed in a conversation when Tobias returned, and they didn’t see him step into the back of the room. He positioned himself in front of a now perfect balloon wall, wearing nothing but the skin God gave him and one strategically placed mylar balloon.
The front door burst open, and Casey stepped inside, followed by her friends, who clearly hadn't listened to Tobias.
“Surprise!” Tobias shouted with a bright grin, drawing all attention his away.
“Oh my God!” Sienna gasped, quickly covering her face with both hands.
Casey burst into laughter, doubling over while everyone else stared, mortified but unable to look away.
"It's like a train wreck!" Aurora mumbled.
Ethan buried his face in his hands. “I did not sign on for this.”
Bryce shook his head, attempting to suppress a laugh. “This was definitely not in the plan.”
Tobias shot them a quick glance, “Hey, you were warned.” But his eyes quickly returned to the object of his affection as his beautiful wife rushed toward him.
“Oh my God," she gushed. "I have to admit, I did not see this coming!”
Tobias's eyes narrowed as he looked her over. “Oh, baby, there’s going to be lots of coming very soon!”
“Aaaand that’s our cue to leave!” Aurora announced. Ethan was already ten steps ahead of her, putting his coat on at the door.
“Hey, where’s everyone going,” Tobias hollered as Casey wrapped her arms around his waist, almost causing a wardrobe malfunction. “We’re about to put on quite a show!”
“You better believe it,” Casey beamed, squeezing him tight.
“We’re good!” Sienna yelled, rushing to the door. “We are so good!”
“Sienna! Wait!” Casey ordered. “Don’t leave before taking a picture.”
“A picture... but he’s... he’s naked!” She gasped in horror.
“Oh, come on!” Casey winked. “You're a doctor! You've seen naked men before."
"But in fairness, none that look this good," Tobias teased.
"True," Casey agreed. "But the balloon is covering the best part!”
“She has a point,” Bryce agreed, only adding fuel to the rapidly burning fire.
“Oh, things are coming to a point, all right!” Tobias droned.
“Oh, for Christ’s sake! Take the damn picture so we can all get out of here!” Ethan grumbled.
“Say uh... say cheese?” Sienna said as Casey reached up and placed a flirtatious kiss on her husband’s cheek.
“God, you look beautiful,” he whispered.
“Me?” she winked. “You look good enough to eat.”
“Aaand we’re out....” Bryce announced as the friends all rushed out the front door.
"This is how they end up with another little Carrick!" Jackie fumed.
“Happy Birthday, Casey!” Aurora yelled from the distance; then the door closed with a bang.
Once they were alone, Casey ripped the balloon out of Tobias’s hands with a grin. She read the inscription on the champagne bottle-shaped balloon.
“Make it pop, huh?” She smiled, lowering her eyes and dragging a manicured hand slowly up his thigh, then higher. “Looks like I’ve already completed the assignment.”
“You sure have,” he growled, slowly unzipping the back of her dress, his eyes lustfully taking her in as it fell to the floor. “Now, this is a team project. You completed your part; the rest is on me.”
His lips met hers in a passionate kiss as their hands roamed over the contours of their bodies. With a low groan, he lifted her as she wrapped her legs around him. He carried her to a velvet armchair and gently placed her down, leaving one of her legs draped seductively over the side.
He stepped aside to pour a flute of pink champagne, giving her another lingering kiss as he placed the gas in her hand.
"What's this for?" She asked.
"Your favorite, baby. You sit back and enjoy it," he smirked and dropped to his knees before her. "Relax, the rest is on me. I want this to be a birthday you'll remember."
“Oh, I assure you,” she said, her eyes fluttering shut as he began his ministrations. “It already is.”
Tobias stopped just for a second, reaching up for one last kiss. "Oh, you ain't seen nothing yet. Happy Birthday, baby."

Series masterlist
