Tucker, the cat behind Lady Normalgirl’s noble eunuch, passed away on Tuesday morning.

From about the time I could talk, I dreamed of having a pet cat — and when I was ten, that dream finally came true. But in all my tiny child dreaming, I don’t think I could have imagined a cat better than Tucker. He’s been my constant companion for the last thirteen years, through all the best and worst bits of my life and as much as I know it’s good he’s no longer in pain, it seems very wrong that I have to do this next worst bit without him.

I’m thankful that we were able to spend so long together (even if it doesn’t feel quite long enough) and I’m so very grateful that over the last year and a bit I was able to share him with all of you. Knowing that he will be remembered so far and wide means more than I can really express. He definitely knew how insanely much I loved him (and I know how much he loved me back), but I’d like to think he knew how much so many of you loved him and how much joy his noble likeness’s comics brought so many people. While I know I will never stop missing him and that my sadness might never truly go away, it will always be a comfort to know my little cat has left behind such a grand legacy of love and happiness.

Daud Cosplay Walk-Through Part I

A few folks have asked for a build write-up for Daud at this point and more than happy to oblige!

Nearly everything on this apart from the pants and the base boots was patterned and created from scratch. So buckle up because it's gonna be a long one. Let's start where I started:

The Waistcoat

This is made from garment-weight leather that I airbrushed the appropriate colour. The button-holes are leather-bound in the same material (airbrushed a slightly different colour). The lining / back is linen, which went together a lot easier than the leather parts. The buttons (originally bronze-coloured) were painted weathered silver with clear nail polish and two different types of paint. The Jacket

Literally one of the hardest things I've ever made and will get remade at one point because there's lots I want to change. Went to about five iterations of sleeve pattern before I found one that didn't restrict my arm movement and the collar / lapel intersection also took five tries. I deliberately left the bottom a little long because I love the movement of the jackets in @eika-gr's wonderful Whaler art. The trim was also airbrushed before it was cut into strips and sewn on. There's a wire in the collar to help keep its shape. Stoked for Jacket MkII that has more interior structure to help the overall silhouette and general polish. The Gloves

Started with some tight leather roping gloves for the hands and built the gauntlets up from there, using the same base garment leather as the waistcoat. I went the absolute ROUNDS getting the colour right here, eventually said 'fuck it, we ball,' dip-dyed them in a diluted black dye bath and then added a coat of Black Antique Gel and then Medium Brown Antique Gel. Tried to brush some melted beeswax inside the gauntlet part to add rigidity but they just went a bit scrungly.

The Boots

Guys, I am - o b s e s s e d - with how these turned out. Have a recurring image in my head of shortish, very jacked, tatted-up pugilist Daud stripped to the waist wearing Whaler boots absolutely handing it out in a fighting ring somewhere (ask me for my Dishonored playlist [ignore the Teague Martin-coded tracks]) and I was hoping these would capture some of that somewhat lethal robustness. Built around my miled-out Blundstones, the covers are done in a leg-segment and shoe-segment. The calf reinforcements are a few layers of veg-tan wet-molded and dyed. Still need to add extra rivets and straps and push the colours more.

The Bolt Pouches

Daud's bolt pouches are six individual little units but I didn't have time for that here plus I wanted something to hold my phone / wallet / snacks / small purchases so I did these as two continuous pouches. The first attempt at sewing it inside out and turning it the right way around looked like absolute dog-shit so I redesigned it with the seams on the outside and wetformed them around a block of wood to make sure they were nice and crisp. The buckles don't function - they close instead with very small earth magnets because I wanted a quick mode of access. Pleased to say this unorthodox method works extremely well. They were based-dyed with Dark Brown Antique Gel and then painted with a succession of acrylics and oils.

The Knife & Sheath

Daud's knife was a 3D resin print based on this model. I changed the proportions of the blade slightly from the model for accuracy. The finish on it is pretty quick and dirty at the moment but I will be casting it this spring out of something sturdy and will be able to clean up the seams then. The metallic effect on the blade is done with a base coat of gloss black and then a few layers of graphite powder. The sheath was pattered up out of poster-board and cut from 8 oz veg-tan. I soaked it and shoved a spare blade print in it so it would form well to the final knife when it dried. Still plan to get back in there and add some very basic embellishments to the sheath. Bonus: Cut it out backwards by mistake so the flesh side of the leather is out, which I don't hate.

The Belts

These needed to be patterned and cut a very specific way to lay flat against my body. They were cut from milled veg-tan, based with a very diluted black dye and finished with Show Brown. I buffed the rough flesh side off with the belt sander. The buckle covers were designed by a lovely cosplay friend's husband and printed in resin. Still hoping to revamp the baldric buckle eventually.

Shirt

Having proper layers for everything is huge to me as a cosplayer. It's not enough to simply cosplay - this must be a whole ~ experience ~ and for Daud that required a basic shirt. I kept the sleeves his standard buff - tan but used a really nice heavy-weight linen blend for the body that helps offset heat. The base pattern was a heavily modified Burda 5895 and there are still some interior finishes to do. I've seen a few fanarts around of Daud in waistcoat plus sleeves rolled up and very much loved the look.

Overall

This was one of those deceptively simple builds that absolutely came for my ass in the first few months of work last summer. The final time-stamp here was approximately 350 hours due to challenges with patterns, many, many swatch tests for colours, some very tricky conceptual work, and regular rework when initial ideas didn't pan out. The ECCC 2026 deadline was perfect for getting through the remaining bits and I am SO pumped to take some really cool staged shots to show you guys.
