Headcanon that when the boys were first starting to physically transform into their animagus forms it was very hard for them to prevent the characteristics of those animals from popping at random times. Sirius would sometimes unintentionally bark when he was happy and could not help responding to someone calling ‘C’mere boy.’ James was very easily startled and made snorting/blowing noises before running away when frightened. Peter developed a bladder problem from wanting to mark his territory and started burrowing a hole in the corner of their dormitory. And Remus exploited all of these mannerisms to his great amusement.

I don’t really. It’s just, you’d think their parents would know there’s no place safer than Hogwarts. I’ve figured out a few of the ones who didn’t come back, but not all of them. I’ve been wondering if they’ll make a proper announcement about them.

Mary had a soft spot for smiles like that - ones that people rarely gave when in large groups, but when it was just two people talking together. She wasn’t all that silly though, and never jumped to conclusions; if anything, she was rather doubtful of anyone ever liking her at all. Not yet anyway. She would wait, and one would come. That was what she’d think to herself in amusement, while she watched James and Lily bickering or Marlene flirting in her raucous way with a boy somewhere. Still, it was hard not to let her heart skip with Remus’ smile. “I’ve looked…” Pausing and then feeling like a gormless idiot, she looked around the common room, spreading her arms helplessly. “Most of in here. You probably saw me just now. And my whole dormitory. Twice. And in my trunk, because I know I sometimes forget I put things in or something moronic like that.”

His last sentence had her absent minded expression stretch into a wide beam. “Oh, if you could help, that’d be wonderful, Remus. Sometimes, I think there’s so many hiding places in the castle, I could be here all night.”

Despite knowing that Remus was a hard worker, a few small creases still appeared on Mary’s brow as she frowned in confusion. “But it’s Christmas. Nobody studies that much at Christmas. Maybe afterwards. But still, you could take books home. Goodness knows I am. I usually wouldn’t spend so long trying to find some textbooks, but I know I have a lot of revising to do. I barely remember anything we did last year.” Mary made her way around the sofa - she’d confirmed that her textbooks and presents were definitely not here - to stand nearer him so they weren’t talking over it (as well as looking around him, though it was disappointingly empty). “Don’t you want to go home for Christmas?”

Remus hated to pride himself on anything much, as he always felt it was too similar to being arrogant, but if there was one thing he was good at it was knowing his way around Hogwarts. Every nook and cranny in the castle was known to him. Of course, he didn't discover them on his own, but it was knowledge he was honoured to claim as his own. This meant, of course, that if anything was missing, he'd be sure to find it eventually, no matter where it had turned up. Naturally, he'd have still offered to help search even without this expertise, as he liked to be useful, especially to people he liked. He smiled more, nearly grinning, as he nodded and replied, “Of course I'll help. I've got nothing else to do, after all, and there's a lot of castle to search through. I reckon, with both of us, you might even still have enough time to relax afterwards.”

With the thought of a search in mind, Remus stood and stretched, before hastily tugging his shirt back down. If he was lucky, he'd get newer, slightly better fitting ones for Christmas, and they'd stop riding up whenever he moved. He'd been wearing these ones since fifth year, and even though he wasn't in the habit of growing much, there really was a need to buy new ones.

He briefly panicked when she pressed him on not going home, though he did his best not to show it. If he was honest, he desperately wanted to go home. Now more so than ever. Every day could be the last time he saw his family, and he wanted to be with them as often as possible. It simply wasn't convenient, especially in the winter when the moon came so early. There was no point returning for seven hours of Christmas with the family and then a night of putting them at risk. With a flurry of motion that was far too swift to be nonchalant, he picked up his book, said he'd, “Be right back, just got to get something from the dorm,” and rushed off up the stairs, intent on both avoiding her questions and finding one particular thing.
