Julian quickly turned a deep shade of red. He rarely became embarrassed in the company of his family, but it was exceptionally hard not to when he was privy to these levels of teasing in front of his friend. He was pretty sure he’d only ever brought Lucy home to meet his parents at an exceptionally young age, and aside from his friendship with her and his former bandmates, his family assumed he lived under a rock of sorts. They were clearly excitable now that they’d been allowed to unleash an embarrassing array of stories on another of Julian’s friends. It was all the more humiliating that they knew these stories from Lucy, whom June had never met.
“Uh, I dunno. Maybe? Like, in passing or something.” he attempted to cover his own back, scratching his neck awkwardly. He watched as his sisters practically lit up at this information, all too pleased that they’d gotten to him.
Lizzie’s face did drop though when June reaffirmed their friendship, clearly having expected a much more juicy story out of this meeting. He wondered if there was a way he could learn telepathy in the next four seconds in order to warn June not to mention their living arrangements. God, his sisters would rip on him for months if they were at all aware she had a key to his place.
Julian let out a burst of laughter as June whipped around, her blonde hair fanning out behind her as she spun to face Vicky, whom Julian took the opportunity to deal out a soft shove to.
“This is Vicky. There’s just one more you haven’t met, I promise. Fliss should be around here somewhere.” he explained, craning his neck as though he expected to see her emerging from a sea of excited theatre-goers. Turning to Vicky, he prompted, “Shouldn’t you be backstage, or something?”
“Just dropping by, I promise!” she insisted squeakily, bouncing on the balls of her feet. “I just wanted to meet June.”
Resisting the urge to stomp his foot like a child, Julian was just about to re-link his arm through June’s and sweep her off to the bar or something until he was forced to interact with his family some more. However, at that particular moment June saved him, clutching his face in her hands as she pressed a bright kiss to his cheek. He felt himself redden under her touch, something that hadn’t happened to him since he was twelve years old and playing kiss catch. Attempting to tune out the sounds of his sister’s squawks, he dropped his head to the side to smile at the woman goofily. God, this woman would either be his saviour or the goddamn death of him.
“See, I’m a catch.” he insisted, curling his fingers around June’s arm proudly. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, little sisters.”
He led June off, somewhat reeling from what had just happened. He managed to pull her toward the bar and into the chair before leaning over and kissing her forehead brightly in return for what she had done.
“You’re a goddamn genius, girl.” he insisted, his tone dropping seriously. “I love you. Never leave me.”
June lunged her arm to loop around Julian’s, steadily trying to make her place and point between the Argent family. She knew that if you didn’t stand your place here, they would swallow her whole faster than a horse could clock a mile. “But tonight, I’ll be ya’ date.” She grinned cheesily at Julian, nudged her elbow into his side as she still had his arm linked with hers. She also knew that her words could potentially cause a rise out of his sisters but the thought didn’t bother her. They girls were entertaining and June could already tell that if they had cameras following them around at home, it would easily become a reality TV hit series.
Upon the introduction of the other sister, June let out her free hand allowing herself to shake it, “Vicky, it’s nice to meet you.” She began, then suddenly glanced around to the other sisters, “it’s nice to meet all of you.”
But before the two could deluge into further conversation with his family, Julian pulled the two away, June assume it was to start to get a seat in the auditorium. Though, June hoped this wouldn’t be the last interactions she would have with her sisters, she had a feeling it wouldn’t but there was a little part of her that screamed ‘you done did messed up’ and just like that, suddenly the relationship between Julian and her would be gone. But, she had more faith on Julian and his family, far more faith that she had in herself.
“They’re fun, I like them.” She smiled after Julian kissed her forehead, causing her to genuinely smile. She really liked the friendship that her and Julian formed. It was easily one of a kind, and June couldn’t dream of sharing that kind of relationship with anyone else. It just.. worked.
“You couldn’t get rid of me, even if you tried. I have connections. I’d find you.” She teased, before following Julian’s lead and let her done drop seriously. “But no, seriously. I’d hard to not love you back, Johnny.”
June started to glance around, noticing the room started to thin out in bodies, figuring it was getting close to show time. June wasn’t any expert on musicals, but she assumed it was probably close to the time that they found their seats.
The only other musical she had seen was The Lion King but she already expected everything that happened in it due to the animated movie. She figured this may start to shift things with June, she could potentially share another interest with Julian, maybe making seeing productions as such a thing that could be their thing. Every friendship had a thing, she felt like they needed theirs, aside from sharing groceries.
“Shall we?” She asked, opening her arm back up, forming a triangle with her fist resting on her hip, ready for Julian to loop his arm through.

Lucy knew fine well that if Jude had any idea about what the two girls were talking about at that moment, he’d surely have her head. That only encouraged her though. She knew that her best friend could never truly be mad at her which prompted her to dig around her head and uproot some of Julian’s more embarrassing memories that she could share with June later on. It would, of course, be later on and no sooner as she had yet to suss out the other blonde walking next to her. So far, she liked her though.
“Ugh, men and their guitars,” Lucy sympathised, rolling her eyes. How she had managed to find her two best friends in a pair of guitar strumming men was still beyond her but, deep down, hidden in a place where she would never admit it vocally, the actress honestly didn’t know what she would do without Julian and Jensen in her life. They were her rocks.
It was such a statement like this that had led Lucy to realise that upon hearing about June, she should have been jealous. After all, Jude was her best friend was he not? She shouldn’t like the idea of a pretty blonde sliding in and causing him to divide his attention between the two. However, it had soon became apparent (and by ‘soon’, she meant the very first word about June that had slipped from the musician’s mouth) that the dynamic between her best friend and his new pal wasn’t a platonic ‘just friends’ kind of situation. It had filled her with both relief and an indescribable sense of mischief.
“Oh, I’ve known him since…” she trailed off, sucking in a long gulp of air in between her teeth as she considered the question. Her life had been filled with Skype dates and meme-filled text messages with Julian for as long as she could remember. Even when they weren’t together, they were still in contact with each other.
“I definitely saw him go through puberty,” she decided on, throwing June a cheeky smile as they descended down the stairs. “So I’m your girl if you ever want pictures of ‘awkward acne’ Julian.”
If anyone asked, she would deny it but when June informed her that Julian didn’t stop talking about her, Lucy’s face practically lit up. It would strike someone as odd that the two were friends if they ever saw them in public, constantly throwing jibes and insults at one another, but there was no denying that they were significantly close.
“He does? That little…” She shook her head, letting it go with a quick snort of laughter, before turning to June.
“He speaks very highly of you too. June this, June that, I mean, I’m just glad that you’ve ended up being real because he led me to believe that you were too perfect to actually exist,” she nodded seriously, keeping a careful eye on the woman to gauge her reaction. If she saw even the slightest hint of a blush, then she knew she was onto something.
“Aren’t they the worst?” June teased, already knowing the two blondes would get along just fine. There was only one person that June could tease about Julian to and that was Julian himself. There was a whole new sense of entertainment knowing she had another person she could do that with, especially when the other party knew Julian far better than June could dream of at the moment. Part of her envied that, but then there was a whole other side that said it would be dangerous for June to know as much about Julian. He would never heard the end of it.
Hearing Lucy talk about the lengths that she knew Julian, only caused June go grow more intrigued. All she knew about Julian in depth were his taste in musicals and how wild and energy filled his family was. Instantly, June imagined Lucy as his sisters being the ultimate devils to him, causing a grin of June’s face widen slightly. She knew at some point she would pay some serious money to get a dinner that consisted between his family and Lucy.
“Do I even have to ask?” Her eyes widened at the suggest of seeing picture of Julian growing up. Granted, she didn’t have any pictures of her growing up on hand to return the favor, though June looked nearly the exact same as she did when she was seven to what she looked like now, just with less make up. Her face seemed ot keep the cheeks she had growing up, she never colored her blonde hair away from the tone and luckily enough, her parents graced her enough with clear skin, dodging the awkward acne phase that sounded like hit Julian.
“What was he like, though? Growing up, I mean?” June seemed honestly interested. There was only so much that she could nag from Julian before it resulted back to the same ‘the same as I am now, I suppose’ kind of answer. If there was anyone that could give him an honest answer about it, it would most likely be Lucy. His sisters would probably exaggerate how he was, especially to someone that June was. She already saw how his sisters teased him the second she went with him to his sister’s musical.
June couldn’t help but smile, knowing how Julian seemed to talk about her, even a blush seemed to creep on her cheeks, which didn’t really happen all that often. “Yeah, well he’s a good guy.” She spoke honestly, dropping any kind of sarcastic tone that she usually carried when Julian was the topic.
“He probably would have given you a completely different opinion if he talked to you based upon our first encounter.” June laughed, burying her face in her hands, almost embrassed upon how she reacted in the presence of Julain for the first time.
“That’s a story that will go down in the books. I wasn’t happy.”
June nodded towards Lucy, signalling for her to follow as she led the way out of the apartment. “How did you two meet anyways? All Julian says is ‘oh, we go waaaaay back, girl’.” She spoke in her best mimic toned of Julian.
Her heels clicked against the concrete, making her feel more professional than she intended. Everything about her outfit screamed casual, but if she were to close her eyes, based upon the sound she would automatically think she was back at work. “Remind me to buy new shoes, ASAP. These are totally going to kill me.”

Julian was already making a mental note to go home and sit on Lucy until she apologised, although he was hoping over the course of the next few hours he’d find a more fitting punishment for her. The way Lizzie had flashed bright teeth at him and dropped his best friend’s name all knowingly made him wonder just what the woman had told his sister about June. He’d told Lucy very little about his neighbour to begin with, although there was no doubt she’d read into the situation and relayed that information back to his guttergob sisters. Lizzie was the worst of all for that, and now there was no doubt his sisters were likely under the impression June was his girlfriend or something. Weird.
The Australian looked up in an attempt to catch June’s eyes, as though to communicate with her by sight alone that she didn’t need to answer his sister. He couldn’t very well start waving his arms in a panicked manner now, could he? The blonde seemed fine though, in her element with a smile plastered across her face, easily conversing with his family. He couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride surge up within him at watching June hold her own.
“Lizzie!” he heard his sister say, opening her arms to give the woman a bright hug. Julian watched, half-amused but mostly mortified, as his teenage sister began to fuss over the woman, holding her and burying her face into June’s blonde curls.
“I’ve heard so much about you!” she continued, pulling back and wrinkling her nose cutely at the woman. “Not from this one, of course. He’s mega emotionally constipated. But loads from Lucy. ‘Cause Jude tells Lucy everything and he talks about you all the time.”
Julian scoffed, feeling eighteen years old and bullied by his multitude of sisters for having a crush on a girl. Not that that was the case with June, but the context was certainly appropriate. He needed to stop telling Lucy things. Maybe he could get a diary. Or a cat that he told everything to. A cat that couldn’t tell his sister things.
“Are you his girlfriend? Does he want you to be?” she squealed, her apparently inability to retain any kind of verbal filter reflecting badly on Julian. Raising a hand, the man began to rub animatedly at his temples.
“She’s not my -” Julian attempted to speak for himself, only to feel someone shove at his shoulder from behind. His other sister had snuck up on him, quiet and stealthy. Apparently they were attacking from all sides.
“Of course she’s not his girlfriend, Liz. Look at her. She’s much too pretty. Jude could never get a girl that pretty.” Vicky teased.
Watching Julian’s sister interact was probably the most amusing thing next to watching the most recent episode of Jimmy Fallon, only this was better.. Liz was about as complete polar opposite of Julian as opposite could be. For one, yes, Julian would say what’s on his mind... his sister really said what was on her mind.. there was, or it seemed like, there was hardly a filter on her.
June could honestly feel a steady relationship building inside her mind with the sibling Argent... one that Julian would most likely wish never would have happened, which made June all the more adamant about it. She could tell Liz had quite the personality, one that you would definitely need to hold your own to but by this point, June mastered that though her occupation. There was hardly any twist, turn or shout out that June could not handle.
“Oh, really?” June asked deviously while raising an eyebrow to Julian. She could easily use the ultimate teasing, but June also figured her little sister already had some kind of well prepared speech for this exact moment especially of Lucy was the one dishing out every last detail about the friendship that formed between the midnight musician and the blonde. “Do I even know Lucy?” She tilted her head to the side, obviously curious. She had heard the name once or twice from Julian, claiming she was a really good friend but whether or not June has met her in passing in his apartment was cloudy.
“No,” June laughed, shocked that anyone would think of her as his girlfriend. They got along, yes, but saying they were dating was about a far fetched as saying George Strait sang R&B. “We’re just friends.”
But before June could mouth out another comment, another woman snuck up behind the two, causing June to whip her head around and place her heart over her chest. Holy sh- she mouthed to herself. “Hi.” Her eyes wide as she faced the other sister. “and your name is?” Her voice trailed, not expecting another Argent to come out of the blue. By this point, she figured there was probably a van full of siblings somewhere out back that she didn’t know about. “How many of you are there?”
“Oh come on,” June straighten her back, wanting to place her foot down in front of her.. in a friendly manner, though, “Are you kidding me? He could get any girl he wants.” June smiled, gently grabbed the side of Julian’s face and kissed his cheek. It did not take Dr. Phil to know that Julian could easily be the target at family functions which was something June was not used to. Being an only child, she never had anyone to tease her except for her father but it was never to the extent of Julian’s family. She only hoped that her actions could help simmer some of them. The last thing she wanted was to see her friend broken down by family, even if they are kidding... and even if embarrassment would be solid gold for June to witness.
“He ain’t half bad.” June nudged the side of Julian’s arm with her elbow.
you paid all your dues and you're not on second fiddle || june & lucy
As soon as Lucy had heard Julian talking about this June woman, the actress hadn’t believed for a moment that the two of them were just friends. Jude and Lucy were just friends which meant they ribbed each other for all they were worth. While she had every confidence that her fellow Australian liked her well enough, she knew that his eyes probably didn’t light up whenever he spoke about her like he did when discussing a certain Miss Bonilla.
When Lucy had first insisted that she wanted to meet June, Julian had been none too pleased. Lucy had been more smug than offended as she only knew that the man’s hesitance was probably due to the fact that Lucy would surely try to embarrass him in true best friend fashion. That meant he didn’t want to be embarrassed in front of June which meant he thought highly of her opinion which prompted Lucy to come to the conclusion that the two of them were very much in love.
She was more than certain about Julian’s feelings on the matter (a lot more certain than he seemed to be but she knew he’d figure it out sooner or later, even if she had to hit him around the head a few times), so now she just had to suss out June. She was also curious about the woman as she wasn’t going to let just anyone take the fancy of her closest friend. There had been certain women in Julian’s past that she hadn’t like and his current relationship status of ‘hopelessly single’ simply proved how right she had been about them.
Skipping up the stairs to Julian’s apartment, she threw open the door excitedly. As soon as she stepped inside she spotted a pretty little woman sitting on the sofa and immediately began searching the room for the apartment’s owner, ready to give him a high five.
He was nowhere to be seen so she turned her attention back to June and gave her a bright smile.
“Hello,” she beamed. Normally, Lucy was rather shy when meeting someone new, but she liked to think that she knew June already given how much Julian talked about how great she was. If she wasn’t so sure that the two of them were destined to get married and make cute little blonde babies, she might have even been jealous of how close the two of them had grown.
“He probably left before I got here to save face. You know, when I get into all the drunk stories and everything,” she chattered on before nodding at the woman’s question, her ponytail swinging behind her.
“Course, let’s go!” she said. “I can’t remember the last time I went shopping in the city. The crowds usually freak me out too much to go by myself and I don’t have a girl friend to go with me. Two guy best friends and a brother are great when you need someone tall enough to change a lightbulb for you but not so awesome when you need an opinion on a dress.”
She grinned at June, already liking her. Yeah, she would definitely do for Julian.
Being in the company of Lucy was already finding itself to be comfortable. With her first words, June instantly knew there would be no intimidation, not unless she decided to drill June with endless questions such as the who are you really, what are you doing with my friend but she didn’t feel an interrogation right off the bat. Her work made it easy for her to detect it and read people even though there were still people who could weasel their way under the cracks.
June’s eye widened with glee as soon as Lucy mentioned there were stories, not just a story, but stories.. plural, more than one. Her head perched up on her shoulders as a sly smile drifted across her lips. “Stories, you say?” June tried to mimic the most innocent voice mixed in with a hint of curiosity. She knew she would take it upon herself personally to try and get at least one out of Lucy. She supposed it was a pro to having a friend that knew Julian, rather than the opposed. At least she could have something in common with the blonde right off the bat rather than being thrown in blindsided.
“I honestly can’t decide if I want to hear them now or have you wait until we are in his presence to see his reaction.” he sly smile reappeared on her face, given the depth of some of the stories, getting his reaction in mid story would have been priceless.
June soflty nudged Lucy’s arm as she walked towards her, setting her path towards the door, “you do now.” She knew she would like Lucy. She seemed to carry a personality that was a rather nice refreshment from the attitudes she has to put up with at work on a daily basis. Julian was great too, but sometimes you just need quality girl time. "And you’re telling me. there is only so long you can run to a guitar playing neighbor until you reach a topic that can’t exactly be discussed with men without losing your sanity.”
June allowed Lucy to pass her through the doorway, closing the door gently behind her as she locked it, placing the spare key that Julian usually left for her in the hiding spot just above the door frame. Occasionally she smiled at the thought of how the two grew to become friends. From yelling at each other in the middle of tehi night to basically sharing apartments with each other. Their friendship was the epitome of character development.
“How long have you know Julian anyways?” She asked, she knew that if June was to get to know the blonde, she had to start somewhere and where better than on the topic they both shared in common? Though with the tables turn, June didn’t really know how exciting learning about her own back story would be. A classic country raised woman turned to executive assistant living int he big city. It wasn’t anything she was ashamed of though, if anything, her childhood as a whole is her fondest memory.
“When he gets tto start talkin’ about you, it’s near impossible to get John- Julian, to stop.”
you paid all your dues and you're not on second fiddle || june & lucy
Aside from her newly formed friendship with Julian, it was safe to say June did not have many other people to count on or turn to when moments would come to pass of needing someone to talk to. She even had to admit to herself, there were some things she didn't feel comfortable talking to Julian about. He was great, that she could peacefully admit but there was only so much that a girl can discuss with a guy friend, or at least she thought. To her luck though, through her friendship with Julian, she seemed to adopt the potential to develop a friendship with his close friend Lucy. June had heard endless things about the woman, knowing that if Julian took it to himself to have her as a friend, it would easily be someone June would want to befriend as well. Especially given the endless good things he had spoken about her. Even though June want necessarily one to have many female friends, most of them passing by her without even giving her a chance, making her more bitchy to people than she should. She had easily been accustomed to people leaving by the second she would try and start conversation. Julian was nearly lucky June gave him a second chance, no matter how impromptu and unintentional it had been, but she was damned glad she did. Her second go with Julian gave her the grace to let her guard down a bit and agree to a shopping trip that Lucy had proposed. Meeting at Julian's apartment , June wandered in without bothering to knock. She glanced around the room realizing she hadn't arrived yet. It was one thing to meet Julian's family but now she was meeting a friend. It almost seemed even more intimidating. But as soon as Lucy walked through the door, she automatically seemed bubbly and hardly like she was here to scold or break June down which was an automatic refresher than what she was used to with most women. June stood up from the couch, straightening out her jeans as they had bunch behind her knee from being bent. June smiling genuinely at Lucy, usually she would have given a handshake but that seemed too formal for their introduction. "Thanks for meeting here. I figured it'd probably be the easiest." The tone of her voice was oddly calm, "that and tormenting Julian would have been easier but he left before I got here." June's eyes widened, nodding towards the door. "You ready?"
and i will take the chain from off the door // june & julian
Julian simply nodded as June explained the situation with her boss. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d been in any kind of regular, paid employment that wasn’t pitched to him as, ‘Do you have an hour to do backing vocals on my track?’ or ‘Are you and your mates free to do a gig this Friday?’. Therefore, Julian had no idea if the dynamic June was currently explaining was regular, acceptable rapport between a boss and their employee. He had to assume by the steady tone of June’s voice and her bright smile that it was. His stomach twisted slightly as he considered the latter, before quickly repressing those thoughts with a ‘Don’t go there, bro.’
“Yeah, well. That’s what you get when you grow up with a musical theatre obsessed sister. Sondheim was God in our household.” he said, tittering with laughter at his own reference before realising June might not necessarily understand. He flapped his hand back and forth in midair, as though to wave off the reference. As he did so, the subway gave a lurch and he was forced to take ahold of the overhead handle once again for fear of falling, flailing his hand rapidly in midair and hitting a stranger in the shoulder before regaining his balance.
“You definitely shouldn’t trust me.” he directed these words at her, a withering look on his face. “Heels or no heels. I’m rhythmically challenged.”
An unruly snort of laughter escaped him, causing him to gain a few dirty looks from the surrounding passengers. He shook his head at June fondly. No one, in his entire twenty four years on planet Earth, had ever described lanky Julian as a superhero. He was pretty sure the dude - not even the superhero - who played Steve Rogers could snap him like a twig.
“You’re a dork.” he teased, giving her hand a gentle squeeze to show he was only playing.
The journey wasn’t particularly long, so the two only had to suffer in cramped conditions for a few stops before Julian was once again pulling June into the subway station. The walk was even shorter, practically around the corner and before Julian knew it he was pulling June (he seemed to be doing this a lot) into the theatre, shaking off the cold and shivering simultaneously. Julian had barely a moment to turn to June and explain to her where they were going before he heard the loud shriek of his youngest sister, her voice reverberating loudly off the walls.
“IS THIS HER?!” Lizzie bellowed, skipping up to her brother. She jumped up to kiss his cheek excitedly before taking June’s hand and giving it a quick squeeze. Irritating, little-sister bony shoulders pushed him out of the way, forcing him to let go of June’s hand. He scowled at Lizzie, but she was too interested in June to realise.
“Her? I didn’t say I was bringing a her.” he nearly growled, his accent automatically thickening in the presence of his family.
“Lucy.” Lizzie deadpanned, in that annoying knowing way sisters tended to do. She turned back to June, smiling happily. “You’re June, yea?”
June raised her eyebrows at Julian, pretty sure that she had the classic deer in the headlights look when he made a reference that she clearly didn’t understand. Everything about theater and musicals and anything else associated with it was nearly a foreign language to her. The closest thing she knew was The Lion King and how every New Yorker she had passed always said ‘that’s one thing you have to see on Broadway!’, but she never had. She saw the movie and thought that was damned near enough. “Sod-a-what?” Her eyebrows furrowed as she spoke her works out loud, her mouth contorting as her confused tone matched her face. June blinked rapidly, shaking her head to the side, allowing the confused moment to pass.
“Yeah, well tough shit.” She joked, knowing she would have to trust him by now if she hadn’t before. He was taking her to unknown territories in her eyes. She had been in New York for a while now but the only place she know how to get to with her eyes closed were to work and to home. “Trusting you sounds like it could be added pressure. I thrive to make people pressured.” She grinned, she knew she probably made that point evident by the very first time she met Julian.
It didn’t take long for the two to find themselves resuming their scurry to the theatre. June practically felt like she was walking a dog that was much too excited to get where they were going, the kind of dog that leads you rather than the other way around, that nearly walked too fast and made you want to kick your walked up to a job before you tripped over your own feet. “Slow down there, puppy.” She teased, trying to keep up with Julian. By now, she was over ecstatic she wasn’t wearing heels.
As soon as the two entered the building, she felt incredibly small. It was already much bigger than she had imagined it to be. If Julian wasn’t with her, she probably would have left simply just from feeling overwhelmed. But luckily, he was still by her side. And it apparently didn’t take long for more than one Argent to be in the vicinity.
When a girl appeared, that June assumed was his sister, June’s eyes widened and a smirk started to form on her face. As she felt a little squeeze on her hand, June kept her face to face the woman as her eyes drifted to look at Julian through the corners. Yep, definitely related. She wanted to chuckle and all she knew was that she was going to like this girl. She definitely seemed like she could give June dirt on Julian if she wanted to. June instantly made a mental note to befriend her.
But June couldn’t help but hold a little curiousity inside when she heard the woman ask Julian if she was her, like they were expecting her. She didn’t think he would have really told anyone about her. Maybe it was spur of the moment and somehwere in between, Julian sent someone a text saying she was coming. June never really saw herself as someone a friend would run off and tell their family about. As far as she knew, she was just the type of person that was there.
The idea of them expecting her caused her to blush, but she couldn’t really pinpoint why. Maybe she was flattered? Surely she couldn’t have been more than that.
June happily smiled, every sense of nerves that she had before meeting his family washed away instantly. “June, I am.” She nodded, keeping a polite smile on her face. “And you are...?” June glanced from the woman to her friend standing next to her, hoping that between the two, at least one would give June a name.

Julian’s features screwed up impressively at his female companion’s use of the term ‘theatre virginity’. It was a kind of crude terminology that made Julian feel deeply unsettled whenever it was used, reminiscent of his own (admittedly awkward) first time. Not to mention, it conjured up images of miscalculated fumblings in the dark. Perhaps it was an apt use in relation to the theatre, after all.
“Not a good enough reason to use the word ‘virginity’.” he insisted playfully, throwing a grin her way and digging his bony elbow into her exceptionally slim waist. He insisted this as the two clambered down the stairs that led to the lobby of their apartment building, and eventually to the street.
He found himself inclining his head toward her to make sure she could be heard over the rabble of the street and late night commuters, amicably hanging on to every word she said about her boss. Julian had never met the man himself, but there had been multiple times he’d come home to find the blonde with her workload spread across his coffee table, or balancing her laptop atop her knees. Times like these, Julian tended to politely ask what she was up to, only for the explanation to go way over his head. What did June even do for a living, anyway? Nevertheless, It sounded difficult.
“Are you not, like, mates with your boss?” he questioned, wincing over his stereotypically Australian use of the word ‘mate’. Julian tended to avoid Aussie stereotypes at all costs, where he could afford the luxury to. There was also his teenage girl use of the word ‘like’, which he was too overlooking.
The warm smile across June’s face, sent in his direction and only for him, made Julian feel oddly warm and happy. He smiled back, knowing he’d cheered her up or alleviated her nerves a little, at best. Tightening his grip on her arm, he gave it a soft squeeze in replacement of a hug, which would have most likely been dished out had they not been making their way into the entrance of the subway.
“It’s a musical.” he explained, amusement playing across his face as the woman hit him with a barrage of questions. Her repetitive manner of asking whether it was a play or not might have annoyed Julian when it came to other girls, but on his friend he merely found it incredibly endearing.
Moving through the station, Julian made a bit of a commotion attempting to get his subway card out of his pocket without unlinking from June, gaining a huff from the woman behind them. He glowered at her rudely, swiping his card and half-dragging June through the turnstile before she had time to do the same. It was a tight squeeze to do so, and Julian faintly wondered which unspoken rule of the Subway he’d broken whilst doing so. It seemed a pointless worry at that moment in time.
“I got this one.” he breathed close to her ear, laughing as he pulled her in the correct direction. He knew the Subway around this time would be busy, and his worst suspicions were confirmed when he stepped onto the platform and through the automatic doors. Finding it easier to cling onto June this way, he slid his hand from where it had been nestled in the crook of her arm and wound his fingers through her own, before gripping onto the overhead handle.
“How much do you trust me to keep you upright, given my self-confessed terrible sense of co-ordination when the floor isn’t moving below me?”
For once in her life, June was pretty pleased with the idea of not wearing heels. By now, due to work, she had already mastered being in heels and walking all over the place all day long, but on her days off, she always opted to not wear them. Every now and then it was nice to escape it, and with how much her and Julian seem to be walking already, she silently praised herself for wearing brown boots. She was almost to the point of not caring if she was dressed adequately for the event she was impulsively going to with Julian.
"I mean," she shrugged, not really sure of how to word it. Her and her boss shared a unique relationship. He was hard on her at times but they also had moments that they knew they connected. Due to being his associate, she knew him probably better than anyone. June knew that he would be a lost puppy if she wasn't around. They joked when he wasn't swamped with work, but when he was swamped, she knew to only bug him when it was absolutely necessary. "He's tough, he wouldn't admit out loud that he likes having me around. He's basically in a puddle of denial." She grinned, still looking out on the path ahead of them. "We're not 'mates', but we are at the same time, if that makes sense."
"Can you tell I know next to nothing about these kind of things?" She joked, knowing that her obliviousness to it could borderline be annoying. Who knows, this kind of night may have been just what she needed to understand what Julian was singing or talking about half the time.
As she walked with Julian, the crowds just kept getting bigger and bigger, more clustered by the second and she could tell the patience of others started to grow slim as the crowds increased. And it certainly didn't pass by June to hear the woman behind them let out a deep sigh. June literally had to clench her jaw shut to avoid her from saying anything to the woman. But it was nearly like Julian could read her thoughts, tugging her away from the woman before she could act. She was more than ready to turn on her heels and tell her to chill out.
Instead, June let the thought slip away. Instead, she let her thoughts drift towards the happier side as she smiled thankfully at Julian. "I'll get the way home." She nodded.
"Well, when you say it like that, how could I not trust you?" She teased, letting a completely mastered, clueless look dance across her face. "I mean — I?" She sounded dumbfounded, teasing between the two seemed to be a work of art the two pick up and play off of each other constantly. "Just be happy I'm not wearing heels, otherwise you would probably want to rethink that question."
"But, I'll trust you to be my Steve Rogers tonight." She grinned a big cheesy grin towards Julian. "Are you sure you're willing to take on the challenge?"

Julian couldn’t help the over-dramatic scoff (punctuated with a well-timed roll of his eyes, it seemed he’d learned something from his actress best friend after all) that he let out upon June’s comment. He held his palm up in front of her as though to ask her to stop, behaving as though it actually physically pained him to listen to his friend go on.
”Puh-lease, Bonilla." he insisted, dragging out his words as he spoke in an exaggerated, teasing lilt. "I’ve visited Lucy at work. I know for a fact some men wear make-up, and then go out of their way to pretend they do- wait, did you just call me attractive?”
He attached himself to what was probably a generalisation about the attractiveness of all men, laughing to himself gently as he did so. The relationship he had with June (and he even felt a little uncomfortable calling it that. It was a friendship, more than anything) relied heavily on a teasing back-and-forth that he was only too happy to partake in. Julian often believed intelligent people had the best humour, not that that was a comment on his own intelligence at all. June certainly knew where and when to pick out his words and use them against them. And she was certainly smart. And sexy. Not that he’d ever say that to her face. Not in those words, anyway.
"We don’t have all day!" he said, mockingly placing his hands on his hips. Unfortunately, Julian was all lanky limbs and skinny legs, and this particular position only accentuated this. Clapping his hands together, he ushered her along. "Yeah, of course. We’ll be in the theatre. Have you ever been to a theatre? It’s dark.”
He could tell that June was a bit jittery, and wondered which circumstance had led her to be so. It was weird to see her in that frame of mind, because she was usually so on it. He simply waited for her to put on her coat, before moving alongside her and nudging her gently.
“‘Course they’re gonna like you.” he said, dropping his tone a little in fondness. It all seemed a bit weirdly intimate, and Julian supposed that was what led him to clear his throat and add, “Everyone likes you. You’re cool, girl.”
He linked his arm through hers upon prompt, checking he had his keys and his phone nestled in his pocket (he should probably stop putting those together) and dragging June out of the front door. The way they were interlinked made it a giggly and hazardous trip down the stairs, but Julian refused to let go on principal.
"Come on then. Subway." he insisted, dragging her in the direction of the station. He kept her close to him, not wanting to lose her in the busy New York crowds, as he had learned it was so easy to do.
June playfully rolled her eyes, shaking her head away from Julian. "Puh-lease Julian." She jokingly mocked back at him. June batted her eyelashes at him. She would be the first to admit she doesn't take five seconds to get ready no matter how hard she would try to. Instead of answering Julian's question, she smiled and shrugged her shoulders towards him, playing the clueless card.
"Okay, okay! I'm going!" She scurried on her feet, her poor future husband is going to have to deal with her making them both be late. "Let me just-" But before she could get another thing done, she could feel Julian tugging her in the opposite direction.
"No, actually I haven't. You're taking my theater virginity. How does it feel?" She knew the second she was in the presence of his family she would have to be on her best behavior. It wasn't like she was meeting a significant other's family but it was still important to her to at least leave a good impression on them, especially if Julian and June shared a friendship well enough adjusted that they practically buy groceries for each other.
June hugged her coat close to her, ready to face the cooler, crisp weather that New York was famous for. She loved New York but man, did she hate the cold. "Ha, yeah. Try telling that to my boss." She was certain her boss would be the last person to call her cool. She was always testing him, trying to outsmart him and when she did, he would get frustrated as all hell... it's what made her good at her job and why he kept her as an employee. She shared a love/hate relationship with her boss. He loved her work and loved having her around unless she did something to out smart him.
"But thank you." She smiled warmly at Julian. It wasn't often they shared soft moments like they just did. It was mostly filled with sarcasm and playful banter but every now and then, the change in tone was refreshing.
June happily linked her arms in with Julian, not finding it uncommon or a weird thing to do. It started to become habit to feel as comfortable with Julian as she did. He carried the kind if persona that just made it easy to do so.
"What's the thing about. It's a play right? Are we going to a play?" It was painfully obvious that June had no idea what she was even talking about. She vaguely recalled him saying that the production was called Wicked but that's about all she knew about it. One minute she was ready to lounge in her apartment and the next she was headed towards a theater to meet Julian's family. She wasn't sure if it was the warmth inside her coat pockets or of the nerves of meeting his family that made her palms start to feel sweaty.

The minute the door opened to reveal the blonde standing behind, Julian psyched himself up for whatever sarcastic comment she would throw his way, knowing that expecting a ‘hello’ to such a loaded question would be a little too much to ask for. The woman merely raised her eyebrows in a way that made Julian know he should expect some kind of sass from her, which rather than bothering him, he tended to find amusing. He wrinkled his nose in mock annoyance, giving her shoulder a quick shove.
“Har de har har.” he said, words laced with sarcasm as he followed her into the apartment. The door gave a satisfying thud as he kicked it shut behind him. The Australian gave a loud, long-suffering sigh of exasperation as she immediately headed for the kitchen instead of off to get her coat, as he’d expected her to do.
He couldn’t complain for long though, as he watched June dip into her fridge (which he was already well acquainted with) and toss a soda in his direction. Unfortunately, the department in which Julian failed more often than not was in motor skills, so when she lifted her arm to throw it at him, all he could do was shake his head vigorously. Finding himself too late though, he attempted to catch it with flailing arm motions, only for the can to land on the floor with a metallic ‘thud’.
He leaned down, retrieving the can from the floor and wrinkling his nose for a second time. Gingerly, he set the soda down on the counter as though it were a ticking time bomb, tapping the top once and leaving it well alone.
“I’ll open that later.” he said, with a vague hand gesture. “My sister is in a production of Wicked that starts in about… forty-five minutes?”
He gave her a passing glance over as she gestured to her outfit, knowing he was dressed in a similar state. His family tended to dress up for Vicky’s performances, but he also knew if he wanted to get to the small theatre in time, that he and June wouldn’t be able to get changed. Besides, they’d be sat in the dark. He huffed a little, shaking his head at her.
“You look gorgeous.” he insisted, taking her by the shoulders and spinning her around abruptly. He raised his knee to give her a gentle kick in the bum, giving her a shove toward the coat closet. “Get your coat! Say you’ll come, please? I can’t go alone. They’ll excuse my lateness if I bring a guest.”
He gave her a bright smile as he did so, pressing his hands together in a pleading motion.
“Especially a guest as pretty as you?” he flattered her, hoping it would convince her to come.
June felt like she knew Julian well enough to know that no matter what her answer could have been, if it was a no, Julian would somehow weasel her answer into a yes. She honestly had no objection to the idea of going, but the idea of going in what she was wearing made her weary. To her luck though, it was winter, she had the opportunity to cover herself slightly in her coat. She felt the comfort of knowing Julian would be present almost in the same manner as her, though.
"Well, at least you are a guy and hardly have to do anything to look attractive. Women have to deal with hair and make up, which by the way.. men have it too easy on." She teased.
She couldn't help but feel a blush as soon as Julian told her she looked gorgeous, especially since gorgeous was about the last thing she felt at the moment. She didn't know if he was saying it just to push her closer to a yes but it still made her butterflies rise slightly. But as soon as he mentioned her appearance again, she felt a laugh rise, letting herself know that he was all in all, just trying to get her to attend. They were friends after all, and friends did this kind of thing.
"Okay, okay... calm your horses." She rattled off, not harsh like how she would have upon their first meeting, but her tone was filled with a teasing sense. "Please tell me it'll at least be somewhat dark so I don't appear as a complete hobo to everyone else there?" June generally wasn't too worried about her appearance. She always seemed to find a way to dress for the proper occasion and it was spur of the moment events like this that caused her to slightly panic. She never drive herself for anyone's approval, she didn't care how other people saw her, but this wasn't just anyone, it was Julian's family.
June couldn't understand why she was so nervous. It's not like she was about to meet her in-laws for the first time or attend an awkward family dinner, it was simply a friend's family... and it terrified her. She tried to hide it from Julian as well as she could but she wasn't entirely sure how well she was succeeding.
She eventually grabbed her coat from her closet, trying not to waste any more time if the two were really on a crunch for time. "Let's just hope they don't dislike your guest too much." Unfortunately, her voice cracked with nerves, exactly what she didn't want to do. She knew how the first meeting between her and Julian went and it wasn't god, which she would admit was at the most of her fault. She just truly hoped his family wasn't destined to have the same first impressions.
June took in a deep breath before glancing to the door, then Julian and smiled. "Shall we?"

Julian had no plans on moving for the rest of the day. It seemed a drastic decision to make so early into the evening, but when Julian insisted that he had no plans to move, he sure as hell meant it. The musician was in a comfortable position, his guitar within reach if he were only to extend his arm, his earphones in. He was aware he had plans with June later that evening, but with sleep seeming to be a constant companion, the man could hardly stop himself from continually drifting in and out of an uncomfortable sleep. He was forced to lift his head every now and again to play back songs he missed, the low hum of Johnny Cash filtering in through his ears. It was a new addition to his iPod, which was otherwise filled only with rap music and the original cast recording of the musical Wicked. It was an odd combination, but Julian took pleasure in knowing someone would have difficulty pinning him down if they were to scroll through his iPod without knowing him.
As for his plans with June, they didn’t necessarily interfere with his plans not to move for the rest of the evening. He was far too used to June making casual use of his apartment to get up and greet her every time she burst in without prior notice. The two had developed an odd kind of back and forth since the night he’d accidentally crashed on her sofa. After not having her key on hand to give back to her after he’d taken it home, he’d merely swapped it for his own, so that they were on equal footing. This had led to Julian bursting into June’s apartment at random intervals to steal milk, or pester her when he was bored. In retaliation, June would burst right back in to his own to steal back the milk. It was a weird kind of agreement, but so far, it had worked out perfectly fine for the two of them.
The man felt himself falling asleep again when his phone gave an irritating buzz, the ‘ping’ his iPhone made ringing loudly in his ears and making Johnny fade away. Julian wrinkled his nose in irritation as he lifted his phone so that it was placed strategically over his face, hoping to God he didn’t drop it and accidentally have a collision with his already massive nose. He didn’t need to know what that would look like after being broken.
It was a simple text from Lizzie, and Julian squinted to make out the capitalised words: WHERE ARE YOU EVEN? XO
Confused, Julian attempted to recall where he was ‘even’ supposed to be tonight. It was important enough that Lizzie had bothered to text, and she was the least reliable of all his sisters. He frowned, opening his iPhone calendar and wondering if he’d at least bothered to write it down before it came to him. He jolted up suddenly, his phone falling from his hand and landing on the ground next to him with a sickening thud.
The man looked down at himself, wondering if it was ok to show up at his family occasion in jeans, plaid and a strategically placed beanie. He scrambled over the blankets that had tumbled to the ground, opening the door and crossing the hall to bang loudly and ungraciously on the door to June’s apartment. He bounced up and down on the spot, and was still doing so when she answered.
"Hiya!" he insisted, so jovially it almost bordered on creepy. "Do you wanna accompany me to a family function I ungraciously forgot about?"
Looking back, June couldn't help but laugh to herself to see where her friendship with Julian had started to where it had lead to. She never would have thought that the obnoxious two A.M. guitar playing neighbor would have lead to be one of her closest friends, let alone... owning a key to his apartment. If anyone were to see how the two function around each other, anyone would have easily assumed they were either married or siblings, especially since half the time they didn't buy the food they would end up consuming. It'd become a regular enough habit that if June were to run out of something, she would prance to Julian's apartment and steal it, all knowing if he needed something as well, he would do the same.
But June drifting to his apartment today wasn't at the reason of food. She had already promised him to listen to his music, venture into what he likes a little more, in trade he had been listening to Johnny Cash more often, always cause June to smile when she would hear him hum a tune in her presence. Though, if he were to hum another song in his long song library list, she would probably end up looking luck a puppy with her head tilted to the side out of confusion.
June heard a loud, nonrhythmic knock bounce between where she stood and the front door, already becoming accustomed to the sound of that kind of knock, June instead knew it had to have been Julian, even though more times that not, he wouldn't knock. June answered the door, swinging it wide open with a grin on her face. Though instead of replying a hello to his greeting, her eyebrows raised, head tilted to the side and a smirk played on her face. "Taking me to meet the family? Shouldn't you at least buy me dinner first, Johnny?" She teased, her voice faking the best baffled tone she could attempt.
June motioned for Julian to step inside as she spun on her heels, walking back into her apartment, still managing to giggle every time she saw her baseball bat near the closet, still not gaining the motivation to put it in it's proper place, even though the rest of her apartment was tidy.
"What kind of family function that you so 'ungraciously' forgot about for?" She asked, curiously over her shoulder as she grabbed a soda from her fridge, tossing one to Julian.
At this point, she was hardly dressed for any kind of function. Her attire consisted solely upon bare feet, jeans and a rolling stone t-shirt. "Besides, when is it even? I'm hardly dressed to be going out anywhere spiffy." She motioned from her head to toe with her hands all while giving Julian a do you really want your family to see me like this look.
Don't forget my name when the morning breaks us || June & Julian
jcargent:
Julian seemed almost confused when she said she hoped he still retained the thought she was nice when he was sober. Of course he would think that. Why wouldn’t he think she was nice? His head felt hazy, but he was warm and slightly, well, very deliriously pleased with tonight’s outcome. It had had the ability to go extremely badly, but the outcome had turned out to be a lot pleasanter than initially expected.
"I’m still going to think you’re nice in the morning, silly." he chuckled to himself, giving June a sleepy smile. She was hardly comparable with the same woman who’d yelled at him for his insensitive actions a week or so before, although he was sure if he was to repeat his behavior that same woman would come back to yell at him. Justly so.
Opening one eye to glance at June through, he raised his pinky finger to wind its way around June’s. He gave her finger a soft squeeze, the action both childish and sentimental as he gave June a lazy smile.
"A promise only counts if you pinky swear it." he explained. "So you have to pinky promise not to threaten to hit me again."
He relinquished his grasp as she leaned over to gently ram her shoulder against his, and he chuckled, shoving back with as much effort as he could muster. Instead, he found himself leaning more heavily against the back of the couch, resting his cheek against the back cushion and closing his eyes.
"Thank ya, June." he insisted, the end of his words being muffled as a yawn escaped his throat. He could feel himself falling asleep, tiredness washing over him. And while part of him was aware that it was really rude to fall asleep in her apartment, he was really, really tired.
"I’m tired now." he said, his voice low and whiney.
It wasn’t a secret to June that she knew she could be tough at times. With her work, sometimes that is all she knew how to be. When she got off work, at times it was rather difficult to leave her work state of mind still at work. Coming home to unwind, relax served more of a struggle some days, she just hoped that she wouldn’t have that kind of attitude towards Julian again. He just happened to cross paths with her in the past when his disturbance triggered work in her mind, kicking her into a hostility temper. He didn’t deserve that kind of attitude, that much was clear to her.
"I hope so." She smiled, her words pouring nothing but honestly. Hearing she was nice was refreshing, to hear it coming from someone that wasn’t family. Sure she had Spencer and Hazel to count on, but it was nice to hear it from someone who she knew she wasn’t the kindest to before. Suppose people deserved second chances, but she never thought of herself as someone who should deserve it too.
June giggled, feeling his pinky wrap around hers. Julian was adorable, June could see herself really appreciating having him around, if he decided she was worth sticking around. June grasped her pinky to his as well, instead she brought her hand up to eye level, bring his up with it, showing him he would pinky promise. “I, June Bonilla, pinky swear to never threaten to hit you again.” She smiled behind the hands that she brought up, then gently let loose of his pinky, letting his hand fall back to his side.
June had a feeling Julian would be hating himself in the morning, with the sense of an inevitable headache. Part of June worried that he wouldn’t remember most of their conversation, but maybe then it was for the best. Julian was turning out to be a great person, someone that June didn’t want her personality to corrupt him. He was laid back, goofy, June… wasn’t. She could be, but it took time.
"Here," she said, bringing herself to stand up off the couch where she sat, allowing him to lay his head. "I won’t make you walk back to your apartment." She spoke, while turning her back to him to walk towards her hall closet to fetch him a blanket and a stowed away pillow. "Feel free to stay here if you wish." Her words became softer, slowly letting him drift to sleep if he felt comfortable to stay. "I’ll get you a fresh glass of water incase you wake up needing some."
June helped him settle, to get comfortable before allowing himself to drift to sleep. She quietly tiptoes through the living room, tried to make the least amount of sound possible all while inching towards the light switch to cut the lights. “Goodnight,” she whispered before exiting the room.
As she walked back to her bedroom, she picked up the bat she had dropped earlier that evening, quietly chuckling to herself. Was she really going to hit him with the bat? The sudden turn in events that night was amusing to June, but quiet lovely as well. She liked Julian. She wouldn’t mind keeping his friendship around, if they were to bloom into a friendship.
