Shiro had a really bad chronic illness (not sure if it was terminal but I’m thinking something like MS)
Because of this illness, the Garrison and Adam wanted to ground Shiro
but piloting was everything to Shiro
he NEEDED to go on the kerberos mission
it was his last chance before the disease would make it impossible for him to fly
Adam was angry that Shiro would go on that mission
the kerberos mission was going to be a year minimum
shiro said he only had a few years left in peak condition
and he wanted to spend one of those years on a moon of pluto rather than with his fiance
I can understand why adam would be mad about this
he probably felt like shiro wasnt prioritizing him over his career
he was probably worried that the mission would be too strenuous and make his condition worse
he was probably worried that by the time shiro got back, they’d be out of time
so instead of dealing with that, being the lover left behind, adam called off the engagement
maybe on some level he believed shiro wouldnt go on the mission if it meant losing adam
maybe he thought shiro would return after the mission and they could try again
Imagine Adam hearing the news that the mission failed due to pilot error
you can understand why they would blame pilot error
they let a man with a chronic disease pilot it. they would blame him and his illness without a second thought
adam would feel responsible for not stopping shiro from going
even after months being on the mission and a year in galra captivity, shiro was still in “peak condition”
he was fighting and flying without physical issues
I think Haggar cured Shiro’s illness with quintessence
that would explain why part of his hair was white since s6 confirmed that exposure to quintessence would have that effect
the clone body would be healed as well, because why would haggar want a clone with a failing body
Shiro is now heading back to earth, a little worse for wear from all he’s been through
but he doesn’t have that physical illness now
Adam is there on Earth and when he sees shiro for the first time after EVERYTHING he’s going to rush back to him and never let go of shiro again
and they’ll have YEARS together now, because in some fucked up way, going to space and fighting in this war has prolonged Shiro’s life
