“he might be a bit much. i’ve told him about you, though, so you’ll probably just need to say your name for him to know who you are,” she said. “…i think i’ll wait. unless he takes too long. then i’ll go into pushy older sister mode.”

she nodded slightly. “alright. i shall keep that in mind.” a pause. “he attends the prep school, correct?” she looked to misty. “pushy older sister mode? sounds kind of ... intimidating.”

he nodded slowly at his sister, then mirrored her smile when she said the word correctly. “a job well done, juni.” cestrum nodded again when she agreed that today would be Nothing Day. he laid down on the grass, staring at the sky. “the sky is not too bright that we can peer into it,” he said aloud. “i wonder what we would see if we gazed into the sun?”

“why, thank you, cesty,” she said with a small hum, nodding slightly. she glanced up at the sky as he did, tilting her head slightly to one side. “it is a partially cloudy day. i appreciate the clouds.” she looked to her brother. “can not the sun cause blindness if one peers into it?”

Rosalind blinked at her words and tilted her head. “What do you mean? He’s my friend just as you are.”

juniper blinked at her friend. “rosie ...” she spoke, tone soft. “there are different ways to be ... friends. aiwei is my friend, but ... not at all in the way that you are a friend to me. i love aiwei. i love him more than i love fairy lights.. i love him more than i love my favourite novel. i love him more than i love cherry blossom trees. i love aiwei ... i love him far beyond friendship.” she was silent for a moment. “but he is still a friend of mine. just as rooney is a friend of yours ... that doesn’t mean that there can’t be something more between you two, however.”

hershey sniffed and rubbed his eye, the epitome of expression as opposed to juniper’s blankness. he was used to it by now, and sort of liked being able to act out a little. “i hate being sick. sick-hershey is the worst possible hershey.” he pouted in disbelief but didn’t want to press it. “well…that’s good. at least one of us is okay,” he tried for a smile. “anything cool happen today?”

when hershey sniffed, the tiny caterpillar girl turned to her backpack and shuffled through it a bit. after a moment, she pulled out a handkerchief, holding it out to him. “being sick is never pleasant for anyone, i believe. it happens to the best of us, though.” aside from the land of the dead kids, of course. she nodded slightly, though her expression remained blank. “not particularly. the sunrise was nice, i suppose, but ...” she shrugged. “anything particularly splendid happen during your day?”

“Which is why stabbing him repeatedly is out of the question.” she muttered out loud, before letting out a frustrated sigh. “If I accidently trip him down the stairs that wouldn’t count as premeditated though right?” she asked. 

“well, you’re not wrong,” the tiny caterpillar girl hummed, crinkling her nose. “... not that i know of, no. it would be considered an accident, i would assume.”

She hugged her and rested her chin on Juniper’s shoulder. “I know… I just can’t help but feel that way.” She took a deep breath and pulled back. “I’ve never been so worried about someone, though. It’s kind of weird.”

juniper patted rosalind’s back, awkward. she crinkled her nose, nodding slightly. “it’s understandable, but still.” she took a small step back. “do you have feelings for this rooney, rosie?”

cestrum cracked a smile. “upelkuchen,” he said again, slowly so she could catch how each syllable was pronounced. cestrum adjusted one leg so he could tap his foot against hers. “if you allow me, i shall believe it with you. for the rest of this day, we shall do nothing. nothing needs to be done. nothing will happen tomorrow. nothing happened yesterday.”

juniper looked at her brother as he pronounced the word, crinkling her nose a bit before deciding to try it herself. “up ... el ... ku ... chen?” she said, slowly. “upelkuchen.” she broke out into a small smile, feeling proud. “... alright. nothing. today is the day of nothings.” she gave a single nod.

“…since the ball. ursula,” he added, as if it needed explanation. “i called my parents. they said i should just let it…run its course.” he’d sent them a scan of himself, diagnostics and everything, all through an email. he usually didn’t like digging through his code out in the real world but that had been inevitable. “how are you feeling after the thing?”

juniper nodded slowly, expression remaining as blank as ever. “ah, i see.” she hummed. “well, i know nothing about code, but if it is anything like, say ... illnesses. a cold, the flu --- i would say that letting it ‘run its course’ is probably the best option.” she shrugged. “me? i am fine. nothing to worry about.”

“yep, that would be him. you’d know him if you saw him. he looks straight out of a tv show from the 70s or 80s, kinda hard to miss,” she said. she flopped back in her seat, but didn’t argue. she knew juniper was right. she usually was. “probably. i just hate not knowing.”

“i will have to keep an eye out for him, then,” she said, with a slight nod of her head. she tapped her nails along the spine of her book. “well, all you can do is wait it out --- or confront him about it, i suppose.”

Rosalind sighed. “Everyone has been so sad lately, and a part of me can’t help but worry about Rooney, and I know it’s not my fault that his arm broke, but I can’t help but feel like it was my fault… I just need a hug.”

“sadness is inevitable, especially in auradon, i suppose,” she said, shrugging lazily. “however, i can assure that it is not your fault that --- rooney, was it? --- was injured.” she paused before she let out a sigh, extending her arms out to her friend, waiting to be hugged.

“positively gigantic, dear sister,” he said. “with no need for upelkuchen at all.” cestrum moved from sitting cross-legged to stretching his long legs out in from of him, swaying his feet with the wave of the grass. “perhaps you can try believing, for one day, that you are in a reality where you can relax.”

“i still can’t say that word,” she murmured, making a face. when cestrum stretched out his legs, juniper mimicked him and did the same, though hers weren’t nearly as long. “but believing such a thing is so hard, especially with the beginning of the school year coming closer and closer with each passing day.” she gave a melancholy sigh.

hershey stared at all the candy he’d laid out on the table. that had been a few minutes ago, and he hadn’t touched a single one. “i dunno. i’ve been in a funk for a while. i’m great sometimes but then when i’m not it’s like…wwuuuuuhhhh…” he made a sound like a depressed foghorn.

juniper looked from hershey, to the candy, and back to hershey, surprised he hadn’t touched a single one. “ah, i get that,” she said with a nod, bunching her lips at one side. “when did it begin? do you know that much?” she wanted to help to any extent possible.

“at this very moment? nope,” she said, leaning back in her seat. “well… actually, yeah. dig said he couldn’t tell me a bunch of stuff when we were talking last, and now i’m curious. it’s slowly eating away at me.”

juniper nodded, absentmindedly flipping the pages of her book back and forth. “dig is ... your brother, correct? dignan thames?” she’d heard of the boy, but she had never met him, herself. “hmm. he will probably tell you in time. perhaps he just has to figure it out before he does.”

“depends on which reality we’re talking about. there’s a reality i know of where i’m short, and there’s another that has me born as a mermaid somewhere so surely there’s one existing that allows you to rest.” 

juniper blinked, briefly wondering what her brother was going on about. she didn’t dwell on it for long, though. “if there is a reality where you are short, there must be a reality where i am tall,” she murmured, placing her hand atop her head, as if she would suddenly be taller than 4′11″. “--- nonetheless, i am talking about this reality, where i cannot rest.”
