Mei picked up on the subtle changes of their face. It was rare that anyone could actually reader her. Most simply accepted her smile as is, failing to notice the annoyed undertone that lingered there. “Do try not to choke on one,” Mei had now dropped any attempt at seeming to honestly care. What use was it now? At least she didn’t have to pretend anymore. Doing so could be tiering.
Their comment made Mei’s eyebrows rise. “Binary,” there was an amused note in her voice as she said the word. It was always a discussion at the hospital when people were admitted. Mei didn’t care what you identified as at that point, she needed to know if you were male or female — and only then because it affected how she needed to administer treatments. Coming in and announcing you weren’t either only prolonged the entire issue.
“Oh, I’m sure I’ll be fine.” Though they noted the change, Juniper continued with a chipper and too-pleasant tone. “I’ll cut them into bite-sized pieces if I have to.”
Their brow furrowed. This woman was rude and judgmental; Juniper didn’t need her criticism or disapproval. “Listen, doc, you’re not my physician and you’re not treating me; so what’s in my pants doesn’t matter to you. And even if it did, one would hope you’d have the decency of respecting your patients.” They took a step back. Surely if she had been going somewhere when they almost collided she would want to continue her walk without further altercation.
