I’m not a violent person. I try to have a “love all” and “do unto others” kind of view, but honestly I think one of the most empowering images is seeing riot police being hit with molotov cocktails
do you support israel?
I don’t support any state, or any form of nationalism.
c-s-a,
can you help me understand how a person can both support the Palestinian struggle and totally reject nationalism?
Hopefully :)
Well basically, you don’t have to subscribe to the ideology of an oppressed group in order to unconditionally support their struggle against that oppression. I don’t feel like the demands of oppressed people need to meet my all of my specific criteria before I offer solidarity – for example I support the right of queer people to marry although I don’t believe in that institution myself… I would unconditionally support any section of society which was stopped from voting, even though I’m an anti-electoralist myself. A good example is the Irish civil rights movement in the sixties – here are people who’s demands were wrapped up in Catholicism, nationalism and the right to participate fully in bourgeois elections, all ideologically dissonant with anarchism but of course I’d have supported them unequivocally. They were under attack. I see it the same way with Palestine - they are under attack, so what they need most from me is solidarity, not a lecture about the class struggle (if a bizarre situation arose where they asked me for one, I’d oblige, but I can’t see it , can you?). Anarchists instinctively and universally oppose all forms of domination, so when we see a stronger group is holding a gun to the head of a weaker group, we don’t need more background before we side with the latter, its a no brainer.
Just because I support the Palestinian people’s right to resist one form of oppression, national oppression, doesn’t mean that I don’t also support resistance against all other forms, including their economic exploitation at the hands of domestic capitalists. This is why I don’t support nationalism as an ideology, because at its heart is the idea that workers and capitalists have something in common, something worth putting aside their differences for. For a depressingly large number of leftists other forms of oppression can also be apparently swept under the carpet – for example you’ll see support for sexist, homophobic groups like Hamas…it’s this odd Marxist thing of choosing one form of oppression and making it the only one that really matters, suddenly sexism is ok, anti-semitism is ok, attacking organised labour is ok, as long as you’re on the ‘right’ side of the national question. I’m an internationalist, and I see it as a precondition of internationalism is that no nation should be being occupied and oppressed by another. While this is a precondition, it’s not liberation in itself…real liberation can only come from an international social revolution, which will mean the end of all national boundaries, the destruction of borders. This is why I think “national liberation” is a mystification – I can understand why people use it, but to me it’s liberation in the same way that removing the prison guard’s boot from your neck is “liberation”. You’re not suffering that particular oppression any more, but you’re still in jail.
