1•2•17 World hijab day. Probably a day not many know about partially because it's not discussed and if it is discussed, society adds all of its stigmas to it. A garment which has so much hate attached to it. Women in the streets verbally and physically abused because they choose to wear it. Media saying women are forced and oppressed to wear it. A sign of oppression and unjustness. In whose eyes? The media's and those who choose to believe it. Where's the truth? Who would listen to it? The truth is in the one who wears it's heart, they know the reason of their choice, whatever they say you'll never listen. Why? Because of your bigoted sense of thinking, because you believe the media, you believe what others, who have no experience of wearing it have to say in regards to it. Well, listen up. 05/09/17 will mark 12 years of me wearing the hijab. A day that changed my life for the better. My sister's before me wore it when they saw fit. Nearly 11 years ago and I still hear society voicing their own opinion on how I'm a terrorist, how I was not born in this country because of my choice of clothing. Well, guess what. I am not a terrorist, I was born and bred in this country. You have no right to tell me to go back home, because I am home. This place, this city where you spew your hate towards me is my home. My hijab, my choice. Not yours or anyone elses. When I chose to wear it, my family supported me. Everyday, I got ready for school/college/uni I chose to wear it. I chose. I was not forced. Me wearing it does not mean I am oppressed. I wore it that day to uni, which consisted of using the train and bus, and you stated at me, you looked at me as if I was dirty and disgusting. The man next to me, smiled politely and said "ignore them." The day I sat beside you, you picked your bag up and places it in your lap as if you were gaurding it from me. You sneered at me and my family as we walked through town, shouting "go back to where you came from". Not all days were like this. I'm happy to admit there are some people who don't hold such bigotry opinions. The day I wore it to uni, a friend said "it's amazing how meticulous each fold looks", another commented "that's beautiful", another asked where I purchased it from. With all the negative comments, a positive comment balanced it. It was such a positive comment that I forgot the negative one. I stand for the hijab, women choosing to wear the hijab in a world like this where people can be rude, inhumane and unjust. I stand for the people who suffer abuse because they choose to wear the hijab. I'll stand tall as I wear my hijab. To all you who are suffering abuse, you are not alone. I feel and empathise with you, I hold my hand out for you in support and unity. We got this, we can show them what the media says about us is untrue. Stand tall, let the colours of your hijab show how beautiful the hijab is and how you as a person are beautiful. Let it empower and strengthen you. Lots of love, HMS.

How to take notes from a textbook
Knowing what to and what not to write down from a textbook is a often an issue when studying. Should I include this or is that completely necessary? Hopefully these few tips will help anyone struggle to use their textbook!
Read the textbook prior to taking notes - This helps give you a solid understanding of the material so you can summarise and shorten your notes. Have a good understanding is great to help shorten your notes, since you can avoid copying the menial information.
Highlight some key points, terms and concepts before taking notes - Remember not to over-highlight, keep it brief and minimal; key words, facts, and statistics!
Have a colour coding system - This helps to visualise your notes when trying to memorise information and also makes your notes more effective material to learn from. Making sure you’re using the same colours for highlighting your textbook and writing your notes. My colour coding system can be found here.
Use the layout of the textbook to organise your notes - I found copying the headings and subheadings really helped simplify and ensure I was learning each section. It’s much easy to find information when you’re skimming through notes. This also ensures that you can remember what topic areas relate to others, meaning you can add more into your essays under exam conditions!
Include different ways to show the information - Use mindmaps, bullet points, graphs, flow chats, and post-it notes to help visualise the content. Breaking up your notes with graphics is a good way to avoid full pages of writing and great for memorising statistics or key elements of a topic.
Supplement your notes - Use other textbooks and your own research to expand the depth of your notes. This is highly important for subjects that can require evidence, statistics and evaluations. Making sure this information is embedded into your notes is great for writing essays.
Add your own personal touch - Add doodles, acronyms, and abbreviations to help your study. Little things that make important information unique and standout will help you recall it later!
Summarise each chapter - Make a final summary of each chapter using sticky notes or flash cards. Once you’ve read your textbook, you’ll have a collection of chapter summaries ready to study from.
Each of these tips have helped me recreate notes that are well-rounded and full of brief but useful information. I hope this information helps. Let me know if it does!
