The Tropefest Rubric of Fun has returned. Pick a trope, sentence and object, mix and match and start your magical, mysterious, heartwrenching, death-defying, awkward or just romantic fic.

Exercise 1

We’re going to start by writing a tropey Mulder and Scully scene. Even though the scenario is overdone, try to find surprising ways to describe it. Choose from one of these prompts or go with one of your own:

The car has broken down and it’s started to snow.

The motel clerk offers them a room - but there’s only one bed.

One is cooking for the other.

Swapping gifts.

Hello! I see your a Xfiles fan and I was wondering if maybe you’d be interested in possibly doing a rp? Or if not maybe you could help in beta reading a fic I started on, or can you direct me to fellow fans that would be interested? The main focus would be on the Alien Bounty Hunter as he’s a favorite side character of mine in the series.

There are a heap of talented writers, giffers, artists and meta critiquers here who all love the show. I’m not sure about RPers but there maybe people out there who do this.

To build up your following and really find your feet here, you might like to investigate the @xfilesfanficexchange and the @xfpornbattle, send asks to bloggers, write and post fic and tag your favourite writers, share fics you enjoy and just join in all the discussions and fun.

Autumn XF Fic Workshop: Saturday 24 October 8pm Eastern

Let’s write some Halloween fic, some autumnal fic, some heading into winter fic (even though it’s spring where I am, lol). 

I’ll provide the prompts, you provide the words. These workshops fun, friendly and interactive. They are open to anyone who writes XF fanfic, with any level of writing experience, but there’s absolutely no requirement to share your work during the session. 

The workshops usually run for two to three hours and are hosted on Stinto.

Exercise 3

Put Mulder and Scully into a setting, using the words from the first exercise, as a starting point for description. Pick from one of the following, or use a setting of your own:

A bedroom

A forest

A carnival

A tropical island

A toy shop

A wrecker’s yard

A train station

Exercise 2

Let’s mix and match mood and setting to create an interesting or surprising atmosphere. Try not to go with the obvious, so maybe add some joy to your angst or fear to your erotica.  Pick one word from each column and write for 15 minutes. Think about what you’re trying to say, the atmosphere you’re creating for the scene and the reader.

Exercise 1

Pick one of these photos and describe it in ten words. Think about the words you choose in terms of what the reader will pick up on, the mood of them. See how they feel in your mind, on your tongue, together or separate. Remember -  unique, dissonant, emotional, prominent.

Lockdown XF Fic Workshop: Saturday 16 May: 7pm Eastern

While we’re all in isolation feeling a bit tense and miserable, let’s look at mood, tone and atmosphere in writing. We’ll think about settings, word choice, description, tension and create the right ambience for the piece. 

With @msrfanzine currently open for submissions, the prompts might result in a piece for the magazine! Find out more about submissions with @spookydarlablack.

Mid Winter XF Fic Workshop: Friday 24 January from 7pm

Let’s rug up and write some wintery xf fic. Imagine Mulder and Scully in front of a roaring fireplace in a mountainside cabin. Or trying to find ways to keep warm on a stake-out. Or driving the rental car in freezing rain on a grey winding road.

Come along and use the prompts to spark your creativity. Chat and get feedback from fellow writers and fans. The workshops are fun and friendly, safe and inclusive, and are open to writers of all levels of experience.
