âMy dad proposed to my mom there,â James said nonchalantly as he and Regulus walked down to the Hogwarts boathouse, gesturing to the gently-rocking dock that was floating on the water.Â
Regulus blinked, looking towards where his boyfriend was pointing. Itâd been a long day. Receiving a letter from his own parents had left him feeling hollow and hopeless, and no matter how many times James had assured him that he would be okay, that they would figure this out, that they would stay togetherâŠ.he couldnât find it in himself to stay positive.Â
Still, he humored James with a question. âWhat, he brought her back or something? Years later?â he muttered, trying to find it in himself to care.
This got his attention a little.Â
âWell, not the first time. He proposed for the first time when they were, likeâŠ.fifteen, I think? Did a terrible job of it,â James beamed, obviously remembering a funny story as Regulus stood, shocked. âHe was nervous. Fell right in the water and he obviously didnât have a ring. But the second time, the day they graduated, he did better. Made it official and all that.â
Regulusâs heart was hammering in his chest. âThey were so young,â he whispered, fingers trembling. But fuck, why did he feel so hopeful? Why did he feel likeâŠ?
âTheyâve been together for thirty years and are still happier than ever. They knew what they wanted, Reg. Iâm like them in that way,â James said casually, shrugging and looking down at him with so much fondness Regulus considered bursting on the spot.Â
He waited to perhaps become engaged. Or die of anticipation. Or maybe just faint.
âI wouldnât do it without asking,â James said softly, pulling him close, causing his body to fill with a mixture of relief and, oddly, disappointment. âButâŠmaybeâŠsomeday soonâŠIâm asking to ask?â
Regulus couldnât decide what to do as he inhaled Jamesâs scent. âShit, James, thatâs insane,â he breathed.
âBut youâre not saying no.â He felt James smile against his hair.
He smirked a little as well, because as always, James knew him too well. âIâmâŠnot saying no,â he relented.Â
