Honestly next to theatre classes, color guard and marching band has got to be the most overrated and obnoxious thing to come out of schools everywhere. Plenty of people on this site love to bag on things like sports teams a lot but I have never met a group of people more annoying than color guard/ marching band students. Why color guard or band is so popular on tumblr I will never know, it’s honestly full of people who think they’re unique or are contributing to their schools. Think how much money we’d save if we could cut them from schools everywhere.

Imagine how much money schools would save if they didn’t have to pay for numerous completely separate specialty buildings for athletes. Imagine how much money schools would save of they didn’t have to buy new equipment and uniforms every year for tens of athletic teams. Imagine how much more accurate grading would be of teachers weren’t fearful of a star athlete getting taken out of a game for their grade not being up to snuff or being afraid that a coach would yell at them for taking out a player because the student wasn’t competent in a class. Imagine how much better test scores would be if schools could hire real, good teachers that actually care about the subjects that they’re teaching and are aware that those results could affect their job instead of hiring coaches thinly veiled as educators who have no regard for their students’ educations because they know that they won’t get fired because of their coaching status. Imagine how much better a school staff would get along without these untouchable coaches who generally have a God-complex.

Now take a moment and realize that athletes think that they are far more special than any marching band kid does. Realize that the athletic department has a much larger budget than any arts program does. Realize that students who play an instrument or have a musical education have generally higher grades and test scores than those who do not. Realize that band is the only place that some people can find friends. Realize that most band programs create their own funding. Realize that lots of color guard and band members pay for their own equipment. Nice try, though.

I think my favorite part about watching drum corps shows is the ending. not because is the big hit at the end or anything like that. Its because of the faces the performers make at the end of the show. Some people cry, some have a sense of pride about them, some have a stupid cheesy smile. The list goes on and on. I just think it is beautiful.
