When I first started recovery I really struggled with my “past” life, and “new” life. I had friends that I just simply needed to let go. It was difficult, because they were understanding of my sobriety, but still their lives had not changed. So, being around them as a whole- was torture. Waking up to my roommates, a house full of drugs and beers, was torture. I heard so much of this topic in the rooms, and many times I heard people say it’s all or nothing. I took steps, moved out, and didn’t see my friends any more. I felt so much guilt and almost as if I had a responsibility to them. Then something amazing happened, a few of them reached out, 5 months later, and reached out hard in different ways. The side of our friendship that I had a hard time moving along from, the real piece that I thought was there, really was. Now, I hang out with a few of them in different settings. In the woods hiking, or going for walks, or having coffee and studying. I really found understanding with “past” friends, when I heard someone share in the meeting, “you can love them with all your heart, but know they aren’t good for your recovery. And to me, my recovery is the single most important thing in my life.” Also, I don’t think I’ve ever made as good of friends within the time span that I have in from the program. Our souls are aligned and I wouldn’t want to wake up with anyone else. It’s yin yang, the bad within the good, the good within the bad.
