Let's start saying no.
While I wait for the ongoing series, I've been watching a few different completed Thai and Japanese BLs.
One of these was Your Sky, the first series from Thomas and Kong. I was really enjoying it and I thought the two leads had great chemistry. I probably won't make a whole post about it, as I don't have much to say. However, I can say that I'm looking forward to their next series.
BUT! I'm currently watching the dreadful episode 11. I don't know why, but this episode is getting on my nerves. I really hate the 'my parents are homophobes' plot for the obvious reason, but what's triggering my anger in this case is the lack of reaction from anyone. The grandpa was on board with their relationship and showed support. The mother was shocked, but she came around. The sister was there from the beginning. BUT NONE of them have opened their mouths to put the father in his place. Even if I could get past the lack of reaction from everyone else, I cannot get past Kong's character's lack of reaction. You don't have to fight or scream — you just have to say no. 'No, I'm not going to break up with Thomas.' No, I'm not going to eat dinner.' No, I'm not going to school with you.' No, I don't want your help.' No, no, no!
Writers need to start creating characters who say 'no' to their parents. You're writing about adults living their lives. They decide whether to date A, B or C, and whether to go left or right. Since they're adults, they can say no to their parents. We need characters who can set boundaries and stand up to their parents' bullshit. I want to see a character say 'no' to their parents. I want a character who actually gets angry, stays angry and doesn't just forgive and forget. I'm kind of sick and tired of this lack of reaction to parents or people who try to control these characters.
I don't know whether it's a cultural thing or if people are just raised this way. Either way, it's one of the things that annoys me so much in any series!
So let's learn how to say no to these people!
Sorry for the rant!
