KIDS ARE SO RUTHLESS
âYou look slow and easy to killâ
Jeremy didnât come to playÂ
L: Iâm asking if you know the difference between right and wrong.
Light: I discovered at a very early age that if I talked long enough, I could make anything right or wrong. So either Iâm God or truth is relative, and if either case, booyah.
L: Oh interesting. Because the average person has a much harder time saying âbooyahâ to moral relativism.
It is CRUCIAL that Light initially thinks of the Death Note as a prank. He doesnât think itâs real. He berates himself for how far he is taking the mental experiment on who to kill because heâs not actually of the opinion anything will happen.Â
Thatâs normal teenager behaviour.
Donât tell me âoh no, thinking about who to kill is super creepy and normal teens would neverâ. Just go on reddit and check the bazillion threads of âif you head a Death Note, who would you kill and why?â and watch people debate about irl murder. Go on supernatural forums and read about teenâs stupid experiments in summoning demons, raising the dead, cursing people, whatever.
Itâs normal. And the reason it is this normal is because most people donât think anything will actually happen. Itâs a thought experiment, though a malicious one, and a lot of people make it. Light finds what he thinks is an occult prank and he gets curious to try it - thatâs something thatâd occur with a lot of teens. The seriousness of his thought about it is more of a testament of how chronically bored he is intellectually - heâs turning it into a mental test for himself to ward off boredom, not because he thinks anyone would actually die.
And thatâs why his initial reaction to confirming the notebookâs power is pure horror. Because he wasnât expecting this, because he was playing a game with himself when he wrote that first name.Â
And that changes him.
Like, duh. If you accidentally kill someone, thatâs not something you walk off like âoh yeah that happened, this will in no way affect my mindset as I keep going on with my lifeâ. Thereâs nothing âsupernaturally corruptingâ.
Itâs just like any origin story. Innocent person - > death of some sort - > innocent person changes, becomes edgier in some way, gains different moral views.
Letâs talk about the fabulous aromantics out there
