the instant I saw Peridot and Pearl interface with gem technology like the hand-ship’s control bridge and the escape pod, I was reminded of the datastream.
basically, BSG’s datastream functions as a transmission and storage medium for a race of sentient machines (of which there are twelve models). they interface with it by making physical contact with the “stream”, which establishes a neural link between their minds and the technology, allowing them to pool their intellects, store and access lived experiences/memories, and control said tech.
and, I mean–it remains to be seen if “accessing the gem datastream” is a function/ability that only pearls and peridots are capable of (though that’s doubtful, since Rose’s armory and the Kindergarten control room had ““archaic”” control panels that seemed to function similarly to the advanced/modern gem tech Peridot and Jasper journey to Earth with)–but I can’t help myself, my thoughts are racing over all the possibilities for gem culture…or what gem culture has become during the 5000+ years the Crystal Gems have been in exile.
a way for gems of the same model to commune, share experiences, and interact with one another without words! a form of communion/conversation that resembles fusion more than it doesn’t, and is more socially acceptable(?)! (the remove associated with mental communions/collaborative learning for utilitarian purposes and the physicality of trusting one another with your light and creating/sharing a body and a new self!)
gem libraries being massive data banks that gems can access via touch! gem education consisting of accessing the data stream and getting information vital to your model/function in the empire uploaded directly to your mind!
and just…if there was a time before Homeworld was utilitarian…the sheer breadth of culture and lived experiences that could have been archived…perhaps kept at high clearance levels now. all the things that have been lost, their heritage, kept from them….
an archive for Diamonds in their equivalent of a temple!?
