Cast Iron Blessing/Cleansing Bread

I shared pics of my grandma’s blessing bread last year during the Autumn Equinox and meant to publish the recipe too…just procrastinated awhile. So. 

Here it is! It’s a super simple no-hand knead bread! In my family Pagan tradition growing up, the term “blessing” was interchangeable with “cleansing” and that’s the purpose of this bread- it’s meant to bless/cleanse yourself before a ritual or when you think you’re hanging onto too much negative energy! Think a deeper purification than a bath- since you’re gonna eat it! Important magical aspects of this recipe: -The cast iron skillet itself: iron is good for warding off negative energy and entities. You could make this bread in the oven instead, but keep in mind it’ll be a little less potent (but I understand not everyone has a cast iron skillet large/deep enough for a round of bread!) -rosemary: a classic herb in witchcraft for purification and cleansing. -garlic: for protection (and flavor- my grandma fucking loved garlic in pretty much everything) -sea salt: also for purification and cleansing

The bread itself is meant to be pretty basic because my grandmother thought that would promote the cleansing ability of the three correspondences, but do feel free to slather it in butter or toast some cheese on slices if you like that!

Ingredients: -1 package dry yeast (I used those easy quick-rise packets because I don’t make bread constantly enough to have a bunch of yeast on hand) -2 cups warm water (test with the inside of your wrist- if it’s too hot or cold for you, it’s too hot for your yeast! Yeast is a precious baby and must be treated gently!) -1 tsp sugar (also known as “yeast-food”!) -½ tbsp kosher salt -4⅓ cups flour -¼-½ tsp garlic salt -dried rosemary (topping) -sea salt (topping) Directions: 1.) In a standup mixer (or in a large bowl), combine the packet of yeast, warm water, and bit o’ sugar. Let that yeast hang out in that bath for a bit and eat that yummy sugar until it starts foaming. This is happy yeast. Happy yeast makes happy bread. 2.) In a large bowl, sift together the salt and flour. Now add it to the yeasty water little bits at a time. You can use a dough hook attachment on your mixer or just a tough spoon (wooden is my fav). Be careful to add that flour slowly!

3.) After it’s all combined, cover the dough with a cloth and let it rise for about an hour. You can slip it into a larger bowl of warm water to help it rise if your kitchen is a bit chilly! 4.) Grease the skillet and gently put that delicate dough into it, shaping it to fit (you can use two or three skillets/batches if needed). Cover and let rise for another 30-ish minutes. 5.) Spread some olive oil over the top of the dough and sprinkle with the garlic salt, dried rosemary, and some sea salt if desired (you can skip this if you’re trying to go lower sodium, there’s plenty of salt in the bread and garlic salt to get the benefits!).

6.) Bake at 400 degree oven, in the skillet, for 16-18 minutes or until the top is a golden brown color. I let mine cool in the oven as well (i.e. turn the oven off and leave the skillet in until it’s cool enough to remove without an oven mitt). 7.) Enjoy! Visualize that cleansing energy as you eat it! It’s great for pre or post rituals and offerings!

BLACK SALT (also known as WITCH’S SALT) is used primarily for protection, banishing, and repelling.

Those uses aren’t exclusive—it has also been known to feature in baneful magics, and can be used in uncrossing rituals.

WAYS TO UTILISE BLACK SALT

To protect your property from negative spirits, people with ill-intent, unwanted visitors, and negative energy: sprinkle black salt around the perimeter of your property.

To both banish any residual icky energy that a person may have left in your home, and prevent them from returning: sprinkle black salt on the front step and sweep it away. If you’re feeling more traditional (and brave!) you can throw black salt at the back of someone that is leaving your home also.

To prevent nightmares: use in a sachet and keep beneath your pillow.

To repel negativity, unwanted visitors, and rumours/gossip: sprinkle generously across windowsills and doorways.

To cleanse your home and keep nasties from entering: add black salt to a floor wash and go ham on your floor. Focus especially on high traffic areas.

To undo a curse, hex, or other form of malignant magic that has been cast upon you: use in an uncrossing oil or powder. Learn more about uncrossing [here].

To alleviate any negative thoughts and feelings that you are carrying: add a pinch of black salt to your bath, or to an oil with a similar purpose that you anoint yourself with.

Read the Lightning

Possibly deriving from an ancient Etruscan practise, Roman augurs would read lightning as a way to determine future outcomes or events. As lightning was sent from Iupiter himself, it was a powerful sign of the will of the gods. 

To read the lighting, first be aware that lightning is super dangerous and that you don’t want to attract danger by standing somewhere in a storm where you’re not safe. Avoid high grounds and metal structures! Now that the safety notes are out of the way…

Face southward and fix your eyes on the sky. Bolts of lightning will arrive from various directions:

From the East is a favourable omen.

From the West is an unfavourable omen.

From the North is deeply ominous.

From the Northwest indicates extremely bad news.

From the Northeast indicates good fortune. 

Lightning striking nearer to you, especially if you are attempting to determine whether the gods look favourably upon you, is a good sign. Farther away is not a good sign.

A baby witch friendly spell to help with stomach pain

What you’ll need:

Tea or any soothing drink

Something to stir with

The following chant

Stir your drink clockwise while saying the following as many times as you need

“With health and luck i stir this tea, and nothing more so mote it be”

🍞Litha buttermilk bread🍞

1  cup buttermilk (if you dont have it, mix one cup of milk and a tbsp of lemon juice or white vinegar)

½ cup of warm water (i mixed some moon water with normal to add in a bit of magic)

2 TBSP melted butter (when the dough was sticking I added oil instead)

2 TBSP sugar

1 tsp salt

3 ½ cups all-purpose or bread flour

1 TBSP yeast

½ tbsp baking soda (it neutralizes the sourness of the dough. It will be sour from the buttermilk so add it in)

1tbs honey

optional: I added thyme, lavender and a bit of cinnamon since it is Litha bread.

Combine buttermilk, butter, honey and sugar in a mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, combine dry ingredients, including yeast. Whisk dry ingredients together to combine, then add to buttermilk mixture in the mixing bowl. Mix ingredients until well combined. If your dough looks a bit dry, add in another splash of buttermilk. Once you’ve achieved a good consistency,  Knead by hand for about 10 minutes (it was a suffering for me cuz it was sticking all over my hands lol. I added in a splash of oil). Proper kneading is critical to great textured homemade bread!

Once dough is done kneading, cover and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour; until dough has doubled in size.

Punch dough down and knead several times. Shape dough and place in a greased bread loaf pan. Place dough back in the warm spot and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes. 

optional:sprinkle it with poppy or sunflower seeds.

Preheat the oven to 350 (175 °C) degrees F. Bake dough for about 30-35 minutes- until top is golden brown. Let cool and slice.

After it is done, recite: “From the fields and through the stones, into fire, Midsummer Bread, as the Wheel turns may all be fed. Goddess Bless.“

Remember to fully knead. The recipe below kneads for 10 minutes and it’s worth it! Kneading dough helps to develop the flavor and texture of the bread, so don’t skimp on kneading time.

Aight so I been a practicing witch for about 6 years now, and it's almost Halloween. I know it's a trend for people to go to cemeteries, so lemme just give some ground rules and advice:

Never vandalize or deface the cemetery

Bring gifts/offerings

Don't sit/lean on headstones

Don't break into a cemetery, if it's closed it's closed

A cemetery is a place of remembrance and tranquility, NOT your hangout to get drunk, high, and to fuck around excessively

If you want to do spirit work do it safely and make sure you're protected
