Finally got around to watching I saw the tv glow and I’ve had an incomprehensible sense of dread ever since 🙂‍↕️

okay but like. everyone talks about the color grading of pink versus blue in I Saw The TV Glow, but no one talks about the yellow. How it shows up in the liminal spaces, the in-betweens, the "i don't want to admit i'm transgender but i don't want to be a boy so i'll dissociate" moments. The ambiguity.

And in the final scene? The employee uniform is CMYK colors. It's a printer's ink. It ties everything together. And the vest is yellow, it's the protective dissociative haze.

I saw the tv glow is crazy bc it’s a movie that genuinely makes you watch how your life could fall apart. Makes you watch how heavily repression can affect your life and how dangerous and sad it can be. But at the same time it’s like “hey, if you’re still alive there is still time, so keep going.”

I’ve genuinely never watched a movie that has given me so much sadness, but let’s me find a sense of hope, no matter how bittersweet, within that devastation.

i got out of the theater 5 hours ago and i'm still sitting here thinking about i saw the tv glow like the entire concept of a horror movie that's not truly a horror movie until the very last scene. the concept of a horror movie where the horror is not a literal monster or a monster as metaphor for the self the horror is literally just the self and the damage done to oneself when you refuse a fundamental part of your identity. and how part of the horror isn't just the damage done to yourself but also to the people who can relate to you and who love and want to help you. but also that little glimmer of hope in "there is still time" because even just looking into the heart of yourself in the mirror is a step forward, even if you take two steps back immediately after. like the horror in hope and the hope in horror and how the whole reason horror is even a thing is because of the existence of hope (and its failure) god this movie is SO good i need to watch it again immediately.

can we also talk about i saw the tv glow as a representation of how abuse shapes identity. i was so caught off guard going into this because i thought it was /only/ about transness. it’s also an incredibly impactful narrative about abuse and the people and environmental circumstances which prevent you from self-actualization, which of course intersects with the trans identity and experience in major ways. like. obviously it’s trans. Isabel is trans, no argument about it. it’s about oppression and repression and cissexual society and control as portrayed through the midnight realm. it’s also about dissociation and identity and the suppression of self generally, so it’s also also about abuse and trauma. a lack of safety at home and a lack of safety in your escapism. finding your way out of “the place you knew would kill you” and something. isn’t right. you’re changed. you’re not you. mr. melancholy- who can represent a heteronormative society, a forged personal block, or, in this case, the memory of your abuser/trauma (and i’m sure many other things), forcing you away from realization, recollection, processing, and healing. owen’s dad pulling them out of the tv and pushing them into the shower- the lack of freedom and acceptance- no matter how hard you scream, the person hurting you hates the real, queer you, wants you gone. maddie being hit as Owen stares, silent, downstairs, unable to intervene. owen becoming a man like his father. and it’s the societal pressure and it’s the luna juice, of course. and it’s also the man that’s forcing it down your throat yk. you are not you because you never had a chance to be. and even once you ‘get out’, that lingers. that’s not separate from this movie being trans- it’s another aspect of the same experience. and one that really hits (especially as someone who’s dealing with that cocktail of self-discovery and trauma recovery rn). idk i just saw it for the first time so these thoughts probably aren’t anything clever or well formulated but here they are!

What's a movie you love but would frankly discourage anyone else from watching?

instinctively my first thought here was i saw the tv glow. i’ve not stopped thinking about it since i saw it. i’ve been feeling guilty like am i turning the tv off?? so this doesn’t answer your question truthfully because i would rec it to people in general but i would tell [trans] eggs to only watch it if you can handle being scooped out like a box of ice cream and have the rest of you in a meltdown
