Post 14: The Last

As this semester comes to a close, I feel that this course has opened my eyes to a new literary genre.  This class has definitely exposed me to a literary genre that I would normally not read.  I feel this is trough the sometimes comical, sometimes serious, but all ways thoughtful input of both the students and teacher.  A few questions remain though; on the review sheet it says “how is the cart symbolic?”, does anyone have any thoughts about this?  Any help would be appreciated.  As this is my last original post, I would like to thank both the students and Professor Clark, for making this class fun and informative.

Hey man it has also lead me to believing that reading is not bad lol. I did not despised reading at all but it was something that I was not used to since I was a child. But as I grew, obviously the demand for having a goood solid reading comprehension skills increased. But still I was not comfortable reading any fictional books. But then I realised that you have to get outside your comfort zone inorder to achieve something (this might be a quote I read somewhere but oh well) and so I did got out. I started going to the library and read some easy reads. Then progressively I went on to read relatively harder novels and then here I am taking a literature class on Postmodern Literature. As I mentioned in my other post, Litworts has been a great class and especially because of our great professor Ms. Clarke. After a great class does start with a great professor. So yeah it was very fun to discuss all the books with the bunch of students and I will definately miss this class. Good luck to you for the future and to everyone else and to Professor Clarke.

Oh hey wassssupp!

Finally the last post of TUmblr. very sad becasue it was actually fun to write your own thoughts and feelings you had whenever you read a book that you just loved more than you dog or read a book that, well, made you want to hunt people and torutre them in the most sadistic, cannibalistic and dehumanizing way. I am not saying I got those feelings by the way. But really the tumblr posts from everyone were great and yes they were challenging as it is a wiritng assignment but they were still very fun. It is sad that most of us would never see each other again on day to day basis but no matter what it is safe to say that we will always be united by the great literature wizardry class (Litworts) and we will miss the headmaster of this instituiton, Professor Clarke, very dearly well I will atlest. She was great at professing and very kind whenever I needed help. Thank you professor  Clarke. But it is sad that this is the last Tumblr text post and i just hope that maybe we should have a Litworts class of 2012 reunion some time when we are old or something. But other than that I will see you guys on the finals day and all the best with your future and all the best to Professor Clarke too. Tis a good by for now....

Classes are just about over and I’m so happy I’m done. I’ll be graduating this semester so I’m really anxious to get finals over with. After going over the review for the final and rereading the books a bit I feel really good about this final and I hope it won’t be too hard. I really enjoyed this class more than I thought I would and I’m glad I took it as my humanities three option. I wish everyone good luck on the final and a good, safe summer break. This class was a lot more fun than I thought a literature class could ever be and I’ll always remember it. I have to say my favorite book out of all 4 of the novels was A Visit From the Goon Squad because I really liked the time progression how it jumped everywhere every chapter.

Congratulations on your graduation and also to the rest of the fellowship warriors who are graduating to after having defeated the evil eye of you know who. I agree with you completely that this literature class could not have gone any better since I thought when deciding for this class during registration, oh man literature contemporary too, it is going to be so hard reading all the books. But thankfully it turned out to be the exact opposite. the class was relaxing, only two papers to right, and an open book midterm. No but seriously the class was great because we actually did group discussions on the books we read, rather than writing papers, which really helped out to understand the books better and to gain analytical skills for the future. I think Ms. Clarke was an exellent and very very very helpful professor and just handled the class perfectly. THe tumblr assignments were great to keep in touch with everyone. My fav of the books was the postmodern literature (I might have said another title in my older posts but oh well) because everytime you read something different and very interesting. Good luck to you as you graduate and move on forwards.

T2 the judgement day

Hey all you people. hey all you people wont you listen to meeeeee (special reference to a cartoon nickelodeon cartoon) I want to dedicate this post to our lovely literature class whihc has tought me so much in regards to why reading is important and why it can really make a difference. I was glad the class had functioned as giant book club which ms clarke said it was supposed to be because discussing the books we read and hearing about different students' different perspective can really enlarge a book and extract out its meaning. doing this helped me to be a better reader because i can now know what to look for when reading different books and how I should think when analyzing a book that I do not understand at all. The elements of fiction were great tools for this. Other than that Ms. Clarke did an outstandingly exceptional job at professing our mix and matched awesome class. So all in all a class which gave me plenty of understanding of postmodern literature but also a class that was also easy going, fun and unified to have more fun.

Post 14

This Literature class has taught me more than what’s on the inside of the texts.  Not only do I have a greater understanding for Postmodern Literature, I have a few new favorite authors.  Laurie Anderson, a little odd, but it is what makes her stand out.  She was ahead of her time.  Also, I thought The Road was going to be completely awful.  However, I enjoyed it.  I did not like how it was depressing, but I liked the language and the syntax of the novel.  Now when choosing a novel to read, I know postmodern novels are ones I will find interesting.

Definitely it has taught me to read more books lol. I am not that much of a reader but taking this class made me realize that having a good strong verbal fluency and heavy bag of vocabularly can make you stand out in an instant. And its also not about glory and standing out from the crowd but you also get a sense of accomplishment that you can write, read and communicate fluently and accordingly to different environment. for example reading the armied of night or armies in the night (do not know the exact title) made me feel stupid as a you know who (not voldemort people.) I did not understand the big message at all until ms clarke clarified it and even then after rereading it I still couldnt quite figure it out. So in the future I hope or I want to be able to atleast improve my verbal communication so it can help me write better essay. Sorry for the rant but i dont know what else I could write about.

Thoughts

Hey everyone so I want to write about what my thoughts were for this semester. It was a very interesting semester mainly becauseat first it was crusising like a cruise ship (pardon the horrible similie) but then near the end it seemed as if your tied to the train tracks and your clone is tied upright in the next train track and youre cut to pieces slowly by the slow moving train and you also feel the pain of being hit by a freight and surviving (cause if you die you will die instantaneously and therefore feel no pain). I am not saying it was awfully depresing but it was just tough to get around with all the reports and projects and the finals and playing pool all at the same time. But the one positive thing I got out of it was that I learned to get my priorities straight and be better at time managing. Becasue lets face it, in college being a upper grad will be a lot more demanding especially youre all by yourself and have to find ways on your own. So this semester was both fun and insanely challenging at the same time. It was a great experience.

Movie

I liked the movie. It was a lot better than I expected it to be. Normally movies are on another galaxy, with little similarity with the book. I think the movie filled in some gaps or things I wondered while reading the book. For example, his wife. We got to see more of her in the movie and a little of what things were like before the world changed. For me, while reading the book, it was hard to imagine some of the camp sites. So to see that they really did sleep in the rain and cold like that was hard. It was hard to comprehend because I can not identify living like that. Thinking about the book now, I think it gave me a greater appreciation for the world we live in, especially in the United States. So the book was not really THAT bad.

Yes the movie did help clear some things. I particularly did not grasp the bunker in the book very well and the road itself but the movie gave a glimpse as to what it was like. The road did not seem like an actual road itself I thing most of you would agree. But I guess it does not literally mean the road (or it may I dont know) but something symbolizing our will to carry on or persist on a certain path or belief. That is what I got out of the movie but yeah the movie was not that bad infact it was ok lol. I also got that same feeling of appreciation after reading the book and watching the movie, that we take our world for granted (forgive me the people that dont) every day and do not realise that there is so much peace and beauty gathered in a harmony of the earth. But I think we definitely will one day when guys and gals would eat guys and gals.

Road!

The Road movie was not amazingly great but it was ok I thought. I think that the movie gave away some stuff such as stating at first that there was cannibalism going on rather than letting us interpret that. But other than those minute things that movies cannot possibly include because it is a movie and it cannot be ten hours long, I found it to be semi thrilling. I liked the part where the dog walks over the top of the bunker. It seemed pretty terrifying becasue of the sound it maked. I know I would be freaking scared as ... But lets talk about the boy. Well the age of the boy in the movie was sort of close to what I imagined, about 2-3 years younger, but Ms. Clarke made a good point as to why they did that, even though the boy's age in the book is not give, and that was to make it realistic. The house scene also was pretty intense and I liked how they changed the scenes to give it a more chilly thrilly effect. Overall rating... a movie that I would watch maybe twice.

All Done

I am happy to have finished this book. I did enjoy the ending, but I think that is only because the rest of it was entirely too depressing. Because of this book, however, I am considering making a bunker. Not for me, I would be dead in the first day, but for the brave little troopers out there. Its awesome that we are coming to the end of this semester! Except for the added stress of finals. I have really enjoyed exploring the pomo genre and realize that there are several books I need to read this summer, including some Truman Capote.

That is a really good idea. The bunker should serve well for many if any survive. This class was really great because all the discussions got everyone involved. The readings were great and my favorite was The Road because of that end of the world, apocalyptic and terrificly scary world. Just that thought about how can you possibly survive make me kind of want to join survival camp or something but lets hope we dont need that. This semester has been really vigorous but at the same time it has been fun so I dont want to complain. Really looking forwards to the summer and that nostalgia which will kick in straight after school is done. So all in all go POMO!!

getting mugged by the goon!

Yeah the semester is coming to a close. Time really does fly by fast (Pardon the cliche.) Having done with The Road I have got to say it was a really exciting read. It seemed like a live zombie apocalypse except that there were not many zombies and the conditions were more horrendous than what you see in the movies. It was a juiced up version to describe it in the best way. But it really was entertaining and I like the parts where the Papaa and the son had to escape or were involved in a fight. There were lots of action filled events and to me that is what really kept me to read it further. Also it was an easy read so that always helps I guess. I do not what else to say really but all the books that we read were great and the goon squad was the toughest to get through becasuse its just that type of a book. But yeah thats about it for now.

Goon Theme

So, for a long time (while I was reading the book), I tried to figure out what the title had to do with the book. Of course I eventually understood it. I got it around that chapter when Stephanie and Jules talk to Bosco. I kept waiting for there to be more of a storyline and these characters to somehow tie together to tell a story, not how every one in the world knows each other. But, this did make the book more realistic. Not every one has a happy ending, or the idea of a perfect life. It taught me a very important lesson about time. We only get to live this life once, and how would you spend it? If you started heading down a bad road, would you change your lifestyle and make healthier decisions?

Very true on how not everyone has the happily ever after ending. I was reading the book and first I thought well so I have a bunch of characters and their awes and miseries shown to me. What next. Well we find out about more characters and their stories. So then I thought may be this is what the book is really about. Which of course. It really. Is. Right? But I did find this book really exciting because its not your typical book. It was fun to read about so many different characters, challenging ofcourse becasue of the broad unformity that is not seen unless you zoom out, and to really learn about the value of time. Time is money in a sense. It can make you or break you. It shows you to respect time and be aware that time is there always looking at you. So it was a good read and certainly a unique read. I would make healthier decisions by the way.

Road to Road!

Hey everyone. Glad that some of you really like this book. I for one however have mixed feelings for this book. Part of it is exciting but part of it makes me, I wouldnt say not want to read it but it just seems I am not seeing any progress. But I understand this is a post modern literature class and therefore you should be accustomed to not seeing progress. However the book does pack a good old cannibalistic punch. Always fun to read about some tearing and slashing of the human guts right. Well not really but for me those scenes with action really make the book exciting. Its almost like the father and son carry on and boom in comes the horde of raging degenerated surviors. Then they carry on and boom a house of degenerated sruvioros. Speaking of sruvivros, it is really interesting the fathers theory of surviing and how he doesnt want to kill himself or his family but survivee and fight the odds. Lets wait and see on what the end holds for us.

Oh SNap

So, I can not believe how fast this semester is going by. I am almost done with the book! This book is pretty cool. On one hand it shows real people with real problems, and on the other its like— wow, can someone have a life this jacked up? I love how everyone’s life is so different, but how they all seemed to want the same things at the beginning. I forgot to put this in my last post, but I wished Scotty’s life would’ve turned out differently. Although I don’t care for him in the book, I wish he would’ve beat those statistics and had a life better than fishing out of a nasty river and eating string beans every day or whatever. I also hated that whole article by Jules. He is a sicko. I wonder if Egan had to ask guys what they’re are thinking when they talk to women, or something. That part is defiantly my least favorite part of the book. In the beginning, (during Stephanie’s section) I felt bad for him. Now that I knew the thoughts that were creeping in his mind he’s a labeled sicko.

I too cant believe at the lighting rate at which this semsester is passing by. It seems like weeks are nothing and weekends are just equivalent of few hours. But about the book, I actually like the chapter of Jules' report on Kitty Jackson. I think it goes to show you that all of these serial killers, rapists and other horrible people may once seem to be just "normal" people that we are. But on the inside they are completely different or even just as normal as we are but just did that one thing that he or she shouldn't need to. So it was quite interesting at the end of that chapter to see what Jules was really thinking, it was sick, but to him it seemed normal. I sort of sensed that Scotty and Bennie would not have good relations at all after Scotty wrote to Bennie because they were times and status apart and all that other stuff but am waiting to see what the end is really like.

Its a goon!

Well after having nearly caught up with our reading for the A visit from the Goon squad, I have to say it is quite a unique read. At first it does seem like reading new stories in every chapter but the connections Egan makes amongst these stories is quite fascinating. So far the best chapter for me has been the one with the Safari. There is so much going on in that chapter and the drama in it is very fun to sense. But I always get this impression that being close to the end of the book, and still there really is not anything being compacted as in finishing the book with ending, I feel that it will all be just a sudden conclusion of all the stories. Reading all the details but in the end it is all the sudden the end.

Whaaaat....???

While reading the excerpts in POMO, I was beginning to question my intelligence. I sometimes find myself confused or lost. Sometimes I just feel like I am reading the words, but not retaining anything. And I have to read it more than once, in case there is a quiz! So, I am glad to know there are others who do not understand every thing that is going on in the passages. I agree with others, if there was some type of background information, I could probably figure out the significance of the excerpt better. But, I guess that is what makes it POMO. I do like that the passages are abstract, so the reader has to gather clues from what he or she has read to have a better understanding. It is more like “active” reading, I guess.

I am with you on that. It really is completely different type of reading where you want to blow your brains out. But it does really challenge your comprehension of the text. I too had trouble at the very first with comprehending but then I got use to the fact that this is the only way to read so I refrained for banging my head against the wall. I think this is the same type of reading we did for SAT's and ACT's where you were given an excerot and you had to comprehend in a flash. So some things just never quite leave you but thats ok. Anyways, I think we are nearly done with POMO, I think but maybe not. If we are than I dont know whether to feel happy or sad becasue some readings really are interesting.

Hey

Out of the last three reading we did, the Generation X was the most interesting one since it did two things for me. First it was a strange type of story, it is always good to read something strange, and second it was presented itself as a clear example of postmodernist literature. At first the excerpt did gave me this fairy tale idea where everyone is happy, or somehwhat happy, but still happy in the end and things all turn out to be good and in their place. NO! The book excerpt did exactly the opposite and in the end the girl actually dies while her lover escapes Texlahoma. So this is what made it interesting is the fact that it paralled reality and showed things are not always in their place and everyone does not live happily ever after. The class discussion made this idea clear and I am going to read this excerpt again for the final yeh.

Comic Strip

Although we have not started on any new novel YET I did enjoy reading some of the short stories in the POMO. Although short I really liked the comic strip The Surprise. It was really dark but I liked how it touched on subjects that people tend to stray away from because they fear the answer. Or do not want to hear what others think.( I am talking about religion). I thought it was also nice how she had a little girl who was questioning about the presents of God because normally it isn’t until you are older and a little more wiser when you begin to form your own opinion about things.

Yes the POMO book is really getting better and better the more I read because all of these interesting concepts and ideas are really good to hear about. Come Over Come Over was really surprising becasue of the little girl. What got me was the fact that from our class discussion, the seriousness of the comic strip. At first I just read the whole thing and never really even thought about it being a comic strip. I completely ignored the fact that it was a comic strip and read it as though it were a novel. But I guess that is what the author is trying to convey to us is the seriousness. I just hope that the POMO book keeps getting better and better because it unlike anything I have read till now.
