-Emmerdale Mackenzie Boyd and John Sugden Au fanfic
summery: Mackenzie has a harsh reality for John
John let out a long, dramatic sigh as he pulled the van into the isolated wooded area. He cut the engine and turned in his seat heading out to the trapped door of his bunker making his way down the dark damp stairs.
"Alright, let’s try this one more time..." He said cheerfully, like he was explaining something obvious to a child. "I hit you with an arrow. Then I dropped a boulder on you. And yet-somehow here we are."
He leaned in closer completely invading the Scotsman personal space. "At this point? I'm starting to think fate just wants us together." He smirked.
The Scotsman replied bitterly as he moved on his makeshift bed. the cellar was cold and unforgiving, water dripping down on occasions adding to a damp cold feel to his clothes heightening the misery.
John raised a brow, feigning hurt at the bitter response.
"Ouch, Mack. I'm just trying to look on the bright side. You know, silver linings and all that." He leans against the wall, studying the Scotsman with a mix of curiosity and amusement.
"You know, for someone who's been through what you have, you're still awfully snarky." He crossed his arms, smirking faintly. "Kind of admirable, in its own messed-up way."
Mackenzie just scoffed despite the situation he was in he couldn’t help himself.
“I’m sure your husband’s not far behind figuring you out..”
John's smirk falters slightly at the mention of Aaron, a brief crack in his composure. He quickly masked it with a scoff, raising a brow. "Oh, I'm sure. Aaron's many things, but a detective isn't one of them." He pushed off the wall, pacing slowly, his voice casual.
"Besides, I'm pretty good at covering my tracks. Always have been." He stoped, turning sharply to Mack. "I do hope you're not banking on him coming to save you."
Mackenzie just gave a humerless laugh causing John’s smile to fade completely.
“oh I’m pretty sure he’s got something or should I say someone more important on his mind..”
John went completely quiet all his early gloating and irritating arrogance stood to a Hault. Mackenzie smiled even more enjoying getting under the maniacs skin. John's casual demeanor dropped, replaced by a tense cold intensity as he processed the hidden meaning behind Mack's words.
"And what exactly is that supposed to mean?"
There was a warning in his voice, an edge that hadn't been there before. He took a step closer, studying the Scotsman's face in the dim cellar light.
“Did you really believe he’s actually been staying clear of Robert? you’re clearly more delusional than I thought Johnny boy.”
John scowled, the comment striking a nerve. He stepped forward, closing the distance between them, towering over Mack.
"You don't know anything." His voice was low, dangerous. "Aaron and I are solid. We always have been." He paused, narrowing his eyes.
"And how would you even know about Robert?"
It was more of a demand than a question. Mackenzie just chuckled, seemingly unfazed by John's intimidating presence. He shifted positions, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
"Oh, just a hunch. Call it my spidey-sense. Or maybe I'm just better at reading people than you give me credit for." He smirked "Besides, it's just fun to watch you think that even after all the effort. You’re delusional enough, to think Aaron would actually choose you”
John clenched his jaw, his frustration mounting. He crossed his arms, staring down at Mack.
"You think you've got it all figured out, don't you? You think you know everything about me, about Aaron. But you don't." He scoffed, shaking his head.
"You're just a nosy, annoying thorn in my side. And trust me, I've dealt with thorns before."
Mackenzie gave him harsh stare sitting up more to make eye contact straight to his face as he replied.
“What just like you did with Nate.”
John's entire demeanor changed at the mention of Nate's. His eyes hardened, the cold rage and guilt rising to the surface.
"Don't." His voice was a dangerous whisper, the tension in the room instantly spiking. "Don't bring him into this." He took a deliberate step closer, looming over Mackenzie. "You have no idea what happened."
“I don’t need to know yeah whatever you didn’t mean to kill him, but let’s be real here you’re still a murderer and Aaron will finally know who no what you’re. It’s only a matter of time Johnny boy. It might not be today but at some point he’ll be back with Robert ..and you’ll be behind bars”
John's eyes darkened with anger, his hands clenching into fists at his sides. He was dangerously close to losing control, the mention of Aaron leaving him for Robert a knife twisting in his gut.
"You have no idea what you're talking about." He took a deep breath, trying to rein in the fury threatening to boil over. "And you sure as hell have no idea about me and Aaron. We've been through hell, and we're still standing."
"You're just trying to get in my head.”
Mackenzie watched as he took himself off storming out the cellar the door clanging shut. Clearly Mackenzie harsh reality too much for the manic to handle. Mack smirked to himself at getting under his skin. Moments later the reality of being kidnapped return when he was alone.
The clock was ticking … Mackenzie knew that. Hopefully soon someone was coming because he didn’t know how long he could be here.
