I haven’t written a year-end recap long-form in four years?! My plan now to sum up 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016 in one fell swoop is quite the daunting endeavour, albeit necessary, considering that my baby lettuce memories are starting to wilt in the crisper.

Environmentalism and water issues are my main foci but transportation has always been an enlightening and equally debatable topic, especially now as we enter the eerily exciting age of self-driving electric vehicles (SDEVs).
How will we program the moral code into SDEVs for unavoidable collision dilemmas? This question and a host of others have been scrutinized by numerous tech and journal research articles. For instance, will there be cheaper insurance tiers for owners who select “Minimize loss of life, self-compromising”? What about family plans for newborns in the back? Will we be able to choose from premium, standard, or basic self-driving algorithms in the agreement?
On a separate note, cars will remain horribly inefficient (since the backseat is almost always empty) but streamlining ride share programs appears increasingly feasible with autonomous vehicles...
Perhaps one day our massive fleets of SDEVs will be the perfect storage batteries for intermittent large scale wind power...
And hey, and how do you charge your EV at home when there is a blackout?

Once you realize the wall is a metaphor... it becomes a door.
“I got thinking about the window seat: how special it is and how it can be taken for granted. These expansive views can be very humbling. Everyone is fascinated by flight, and for now, airplanes are how we get to experience it. At some point on each flight I’ve been on, I think about sitting in a chair in the sky, and it seems crazy every time.” - Jim Darling on his ‘Airplane Window’ series

Just over a year ago in Belgium I felt safe to learn, grow, and explore; there was even potential to stay back to work and live as well. Multiculturalism thrives there just as much as here in hometown Toronto.
Which is why it’s still so difficult for me to comprehend, if I had remained there or if I had started my program a few years later, any edgy nerves or hesitation when switching trains commuting to class or showing traveling friends around touristy crowded landmarks.
The 2014 Ottawa shooting was an attack on our soil that hit home hard. And now, the fact that a Belgian national was the provocateur behind the Paris attacks and has fellow conspirators in the Brussels region is heartbreaking and upsetting.
It’s bizarre - almost as if my life as a box with ‘I love Belgium’ on it filled with fries, waffles, chocolate, and beer, is being flipped upside down on cold wet jaggy cobblestone.
Well, in that case, I’ll save the beer first. Everyone knows it’s terrible to spill beer.

Approaching eight years now - the number of years the core Lim family have since lived under one roof. I uprooted for university when I was 17 and continued to study abroad until last year. Mom and the sister have moved back to Toronto, Canada where I have tentatively set up camp as well. Meanwhile, Dad is still in China as our chief breadwinner. This summer I will be home alone in the suburbs for six weeks while Mom and the sister keep Dad company in an opposite time zone.
As I watch CX829 on FlightRadar24 touch down pixel by pixel... there is a deep exhalation of relief... and the bizarre feeling of homesicknesses in my very own house.
DAT STANCE. Boy, do I miss hitting a ball...
