Latvian Currency Rebrand Based on my dissertation, titled 'The Effects of Commercialism and Modernism on Logo Design, and How that has Impacted on the Logos of Modern Businesses', I wanted to explore the idea of currency symbols being the most powerful and recognised logos in culture. The direction I wanted to explore in this project was to chose an existing nationally currency and redesign it in such a way that the imagery could compete with such world renown currency symbols like the dollar sign. Looking through existing currencies I chose the Latvian Lat to focus my project outcome on. In early 2014 Latvia was finally able to convert to the Euro and this gave me the idea for the concept behind a redesign of their currency. That concept being that instead of converting to the Euro at the start of 2014 they instead decided to re-establish their currency in a more culturally fulfilling way. I went on not only to design the new symbol for the Latvian Lat, abbreviated as 'Ls', but also to redesign the currency notes based around both Latvian culture and modernist design.
Penguin (Book Cover) This brief was to create a new book cover design for Jonathan Coe's novel What A Carve Up! for the Penguin design competition. Tasked with the concept of creating a cover that reflects the richness of Jonathan Coe’s writing to appeal to a contemporary, discerning, literary readership. My final concept reflects the feel of an early chapter in the book that describes the protagonists' cluttered room after living alone for years without visitors, the design mirrors one of the many videotapes that scatter his musty flat. Representing the narrative of the protagonist, in his own self neglect, but also the 'cut and paste' style of the books structure. The final design showing the duality of the hand written spine and the clean modern graphics of the videotape cover, representing the struggle between the protagonist and the Winshaw family that he came to loathe.
National Trust (web & mobile app) In answer to the brief I have come up with a new way to advertise the National Trust Foundation to its newly desired target market of 25-40 year olds. Breaking away from the National Trust's currently perceived image and creating a new exciting, enthralling and accessible one. Doing so by making use of their more contemporary logo but dropping the logo type from this image, thus enabling a widespread use of brand identity without old public ideas holding the campaign back. The new campaign focuses on a newly developed app, which can both be accessed online and by the use of mobile devices. On top of this the new tag line 'Step into adventure' is used in advertisements for the app and also on the website, this tag line works together with concept of the app to both inspire awe and to show people how close National Trust Foundation locations are to them. A long with this replacing the existing use, of a rather regal purple, with a new blue shade which represents freedom, knowledge and clarity. The app that has be designed is to easily show and access National Trust Foundation location to the user. It is clear and simple to use, providing information and photos on all of 567 available locations. With both versions of the app giving users the ability to customize its appearance, letting them save their favorite locations but also allowing the user to change the background image. This background image can be changed to their favourite, or randomly selected, National Trust Location. And also allowing the change back to the new blue for possible increased ease of access.
Haigh Show (logo & poster) Commission to create a logo for Haigh Show, they wanted a design that both represented the heritage of the show but that was also contemporary and accessible. On completing this I was then asked to also create a poster for the show.
Amber Tide Final major project for my second year. Asked to create a full corporate identity from a number of different types of companies, the one I chose being a microbrewery. The outcome of this project was to come up with a name for said company, create a logo, stationary, and a brochure.
The Creative Behind The Design Self promotional video created in the style of the trailer for movie The Place Beyond The Pines. Using footage of myself playing in my band Esoteric Youth to create a feeling of passion and drive that I feel represents the energy I put into my work as a designer. (video footage by Alana Nabulsi)
Viral Ad A collaborative project with Chris Cottam to create a viral ad to advertise the creative courses offered at Blackpool and the Fylde College.
Pen Pals (Roses Creative Awards) For the Roses Creative Awards I chose the Pen Pals brief out of the 10 briefs presented to me. Tasked with creating a way to make the idea of having a traditional pen pal an exciting one, I created a new company by the name of Aventure. Along with creating a company I designed a pen pal stationary starter pack and a series of posters. All binding together to promote how exciting it can be to get to know new people and learn about their interesting lives.
Bio For the brief I chose for Starpack I was asked to design packaging suitable for a form of cleaning project, using nature and biology as means for inspiration.
