"Clarity is an intoxicating drug, and you spent almost two years without it, believing you were losing your mind, believing you were the monster, and you want something black and white more than you've ever wanted anything in this world." • "Fear makes liars of us all." • I spent today finishing this book and then seeing this movie. I HIGHLY recommend them. They are not only great but important. I devoured the novel by sleeping less and was on the edge of my seat in the movies by myself yelling at the screen because I was so immersed. Each story was a fantastic representation of how someone can be made to feel like they are the problematic person in the relationship by the actual abuser. • It was a stark reminder of friends, family, acquaintances, and personal circumstances that were deeply affected by psychological and physical abuse. Some that have been acknoweldged, some are currently being identified, and some that are likely continuing to happen and no one would even know. That is the nature of emotional manipulation and psychological damning forced on people by those who want complete control and for others to feel helpless. The ramifications are endless. The lasting effects are ripples that bump into every aspect of their lives forever. If there's one thing you can do, it is listen and believe people when they insinuate that someone in their life is less than they seem on the surface. • I was genuinely surprised that neither book nor movie offered resources for those who might be in or even suspect that they are in a violent relationship, and with the recognition that it is difficult to access resources when someone intends on controling every action, here are some easy links, just in case. If you are in or just out of an abusive relationship, coming to terms with something that happened in the past, or trying to find a way to help someone you love, hate, or know, hopefully these can help.
