A Response: "Miley is Punk As Fuck" by Dan Ozzi

Click here to read the original Noisey article. I'm so enraged by this article, I decided to write a response on my blog.  It's rare when I take the time out to organize my thoughts like this, but this article is absolutely absurd.

Here lies another "trendy" article trying to diverge from the mainstream viewpoint.  In this article Ozzi tries to explain to us all how "punk" Miley is, his main defense being that she doesn't give a fuck.  He explains that her carefree nature justifies her videos and performances, and that we're all just too dumb not seeing how important that is.  A lovely quote is, "you’re not grasping the concept of not giving a fuck. Not only does Miley not care about your overly high-minded theories, she won’t even accept the premise. Fuck you!"

While Ozzi is basically bringing up a point we already know, only in the second to last paragraph does he get to the actual music.  Isn't that interesting?  He spent seven paragraphs defending her antics revolving around her music, yet doesn't feel the need to, I don't know, mention the actual music.  Even better, when he finally gets there, he addresses "Can't Stop", saying "I’d say I’ve watched the video five dozen times and I can’t even tell you how the song goes."  This is fucking infuriating.

That in and of itself is my issue with Miley Cyrus.  I won't argue if she's sane or racist or what.  Fact of the matter is she's simply a spectacle, not an artist.  If your music has nothing to say then it doesn't matter how ridiculous your antics are, nothing is valuable in that other than more money in your pocket.

Not to mention she only had the opportunity to shake her ass on TV or get naked for a video because she was privileged from the start.  She has always had a financial cushion from her parents, and then when she was rich enough she had her chance to "be punk".  And you want to know why?  Because she knows she'll always have something or somewhere to fall back on if it doesn't work out or if the public turns on her.  That's the least punk thing I've ever heard.

I'm really tired of hearing people tell me how empowered or great or rebellious Miley Cyrus is.  Shit is fucking ridiculous.
