Pixar Dynamics â Barley & Ian (Onward)
I wanna take the time to talk about the relationship between Wilden Lightfoot and Laurel. The only glimpse we have of them together in the film was this picture and the cassette recording of Wilden and Laurelâs conversation. In that cassette we hear a little of how they usually respond to each other as a couple.
At the beginning of the recording, Laurel mentioned to Wilden that the recording was not gonna work but she does this in a more playful manner. Wilden just rubs it off that silly comment and persisted in trying the recording while still talking to Laurel in the background. We later hear more of Laurelâs comments and Wilden calmly laughs it off but still listens to her. At the end, Laurel questioned Wilden, âIs it really working?â As she is surprised that maybe he actually made it work. Wilden playfully replied, âWell, lets find out!â
I like this conversation because we can get a glimpse of how they were together. To me Laurel is definitely the talker and assertive person in the relationship. If there is something that she thinks she needs to say or do she will not hesitateâshe has a lot of spunk is what I am saying. As for WIlden, I do see him as the more mature version of Ian. Wilden has this quiet confidence yet strong determination that what he believes will work. They kinda complemented each other. Laurel gives Wilden the playful tackles while Wilden just rolls with it. I think that was one aspect why Laurel loved him because Wilden had always surprised her with his self-confidence. And Wilden of course loved Laurel because she is the spark that makes life so interesting and never dull.
Then Wilden gave Laurel a gift of two boys:
that moment when you can feel yourself getting bad again but you don't know how to stop it so you just watch your mental state slowly deteriorate

Barley and Wilden headcanons
Wilden used to play Quests of Yore as well and Barley when he was older found his old collection and that's how he got introduced to the game.
Wilden would tell Barley plenty of stories about the past and how magical the world was.
Barley used to pull Wilden's beard.
On Halloween Wilden would dress up along with with Barley and they'd go trick or treating together.
Barley was the first to find the tape and he'd talk to it too until he gifted it to Ian.
Wilden has the same taste in music as Barley.
I love Onward because itâs not one of those stories where someone brings a loved one back and the loved on knows they passed on and itâs not their time or place so they become despondent, depressed, and not themselves. Most stories about bringing a loved one back are about the protagonists acting selfishly because of their pain, and it has consequences. Onward does have consequences for bringing their dad back, but not one where they regret seeing him again. They treasure their time, they see him again, and Barley gets to properly say goodbye. Their dad gets to tell Barley (and consequently to Ian) what he wanted to, what he was always waiting for before he died. And though theyâve loved him their whole lives, and Ian never even knew him, they arenât hateful about saying goodbye, and heâs not hateful for the time they brought him back. Thereâs just love. And it shows that grief is fucking valid.
