“This one’s for me, this one’s for me, aaaaand,” Todd planted a kiss on his husband’s cheek as he passed him his mail. “This one is for you!”
“Thanks.” Neil reached for his reading glasses, and turned the letter over. Seeing the font his address was scrawled in made him freeze up, breath caught. He would recognise that handwriting anywhere.
“Is everything ok?” Todd leant over, one hand on Neil’s shoulder. Neil took a deep breath, grounding himself.
“It’s my father. I’d know that handwriting anywhere.”
Todd seemed equally as disturbed. “How’d he get our address?”
“I don’t know. I don’t even know what he wants.” He could have found that out by just opening the letter, but for the first time in a decade or so, Neil felt truly scared. Chilled to the bone scared. He wasn’t sure he wanted to open it.
“You don’t have to open it. Or you can read it, and then throw it into the fireplace.” Todd patted Neil’s back comfortingly. “You’re an adult, you’re not seventeen anymore. You don’t owe him shit.”
“I’ll read it. It could be important.”
“Nothing that man has to say is important.” Todd was fuming, filled with rage. Understandably so. Mr. Perry was a vile man.
So Neil opened the envelope with shaking hands, concerned by the sheer length of the letter. It had to be at least three pages long.
“Do you need space?” Todd, supportive as ever, went to leave the room. Neil shook his head.
“I think it’d be better if you stayed.”
Todd obliged, taking a seat next to Neil on the couch.
Neil read certain quotes aloud, mainly mumbling. Todd read along silently too, but didn’t say anything.
“My mother’s ill.” Neil looked over at Todd, tears welling in his eyes. “My mother’s ill, and I’m not welcome to visit her.”
“He can’t stop you from visiting-“
“He can. He can, and he will. He said if I make any attempt to communicate with her unless exempted by him, he’ll press charges. What monster presses charges against their own son for trying to see his mother?”
“Is your mum’s condition bad?” Todd knew just as much as Neil did, he was just trying to give Neil some sense of control in the situation.
“He said he’ll make arrangements when it becomes fatal.” Neil’s voice was breaking. “Not if. When. It’s going to kill her, and he knows it. But he still doesn’t want me there.”
“I’m sorry, Neil.” Todd felt helpless. He could never help Neil. Not when Neil’s father was involved.
“S’not your fault. It’s just shit. She doesn’t deserve it. God knows he does.”
Todd threw an arm around Neil, giving him a hug. It was a little childish but Neil accepted the gesture, and cupped his head in his hands.
“We’ll find a way. We always do.”
“I want to say you’re right.”
“You’re legally obligated. Married, remember?” Todd flashed his ring.
Neil laughed. “Right. I’ll have to write back.”
“And if does get to it, you’ll have to come with me. I can’t deal with him, especially if my mum-“
Todd nodded. “Husband magic. I’ll give your father hell if he so much as looks at you.”
“We’ll be fine, right? Everything will turn out fine.”
