The "enemy." One's enemy. Enemy nation. Entire nation against the other entire nation. One people exulting the suffering institutionalized on another. The enemy becomes abstract. The relationship becomes abstract. The nation the enemy the name becomes larger than its own identity. Larger than its own measure. Larger than its own properties. Larger than its own signification. For this people. For the people who is their enemy. For the people who is their ruler's subject and their ruler's victory.

KNOW ANYONE WHO LIKES POETRY BUT IS ALWAYS BUMMED OUT BECAUSE MOST POETRY IS GENERALLY SHITTY?
TORCH BALLADS
by John-Vincent Greco
Tell them about this one.
John-Vincent Greco’s Torch Ballads is one of the best things we’ve read all year. A goddamn riot of ideas and story and life, it kicked our ass and made us rethink a lot of big things. Total stunner. Total rule-breaker. Solid throughout. Unlike a lot of poetry (these are more like urban folk tales as verse), Greco’s work gives you a lot of substance and delivers it in a clean, smart, unpretentious way.
Across these densely-packed 64 pages, no word is wasted and you come away feeling like you’ve just read eleven Great American Novels. Excellent character writing. Big, visual, richly emotional while retaining a good sense of humor.
Here at Pioneers Press we don’t read a lot of poetry. Or more so, we don’t come across a lot of poetry that’s all that satisfying and we most definitely don’t carry much of it in our catalog (almost as a rule). But then something like this comes along that just bowls you over and changes everything. Outstanding
"Eleven novels? I don't know about that, but..." - Sheriff Joe, my best friend and 3 time roommate
"Not better than Star Wars will be" - my godson
"I like the match thingy" - his sister
i say check out a copy for yourself over at Pioneers Press. and thanks to everyone who keeps spreading the word on this zine. new stuff coming this year... Jv

young coroner: no, self-administered acute poisoning brought on by a heavy combination of barbiturate & alcohol consumption upon witnessing tourists on a Segway tour in a major metropolitan city

A poetry festival in Miami is going to provide me with a budget to protest their poetry events, with poetry. Weird. I’d love to include as many writer friends of mine in this project. Consider us co-collaborators if I use your stuff. Please help spread the word, I plan on putting a good amount of effort into this thing to (hopefully) make it great.

I was 23. Not a man. Obsessed with personal freedom and unwilling to say yes to anyone and mean it. I would have gnawed my own leg off to get out of promises I made. The only courage I had was facing a 12-foot wave with a surfboard. Braver, and more dumb, if you consider at that point I had spent my entire life in a land-locked state and was now surfing winter swells. But any idiot can drown in the ocean. Being a decent person is much harder to learn.
