      He nodded, satisfied with the fact he’d even thought of it. But there was a creeping sense of curiosity. amy settles into her own corner of the patchy couch, hooks her feet up under her haunches. she’s pretty sure it’s a paradox, that she could feel at ease here (is john not at least half the reason for all the – ?), but she does, and tries to even when she doesn’t.

there isn’t a better word for the particular kind of restlessness that comes from being expected to live a normal life when most everything in your head is very far from normal, but there should be.

A faint smile pulls at his lips. Despite the dynamic change, he can’t help but like Amy. He gets his buddy’s interest, but he’ll just have to get used to her being around. Hopefully, she won’t be another case of Jennifer Lopez where Dave just stops seeing him as much, stop wanting to hang out, stops wanting to deal with the haunted bullshit around them. That’d hurt much more than he let on. He’s much closer to Dave than he is his own brother. 

“Hell, I don’t blame you. Who wants to stay here all day?” Granted, Dave’s place does look a little less like an atomic bomb went off. Either she’s been prompting him to clean a little more or she’s been helping out.  Either way, the place looks habitable.  “There’s apparently some hot yoga class my girlfriend’s doing. Or something like that. Maybe you two could do that together?” He’ll offer at least.

another sigh rattles up from the webbing of their trachea and larynx, pronged tongue swiped over their lower lip, briefly. 

‘ now, your weapon, please. we find it rather tiresome to make civil conversation with humans who are set on killing us. ’

a darkening shift in tone flashes their teeth, now not in mischief but in warning, bristling rows, hunger sharpened by the noxious cloud of displeasure. 

‘ you understand, there are others who would have far less tolerance for the man responsible for the wholesale slaughter of their progeny. i suggest you mind your tone and sit down. is that quite clear? ’

Tension is coiled between his shoulders, and it’s one of those moments where he wishes Dave were here with him, back to back, with a sawed off shotgun just so he can feel a little less scared shitless.  They’ve been through a lot, bumbled through saving the people of UNDISCLOSED a few times, but what he’s looking at right now defies a lot of their regular kind of weirdness and falls more in the Shadow People category. And it’s in the middle of his apartment which sits even LESS well with him.

It takes him a moment to catch on to what this thing is saying, and his grip slackens on the bat slowly. Did he really think he could do any real damage with the Bible Belter? NO, not really. Not against something like....whatever this thing is. John carefully sits the bat down, leaning it against the slumped over, broken arm chair he ends up sitting in.  “So. . .I guess you’re pissed about that.” Probably an obvious statement. “I’d say MY BAD if I’d started that fight, but I didn’t go dickin’ around in their universe first.” Hell, he only wanted to get high that night where all this bizarre bullshit began and managed to pick the reality altering, multidimensional space syrup.

            mack definitely wanted to go after that. but they knew better than to keep pressing john on it. they knew a lot more than john thought they did already, it wouldn’t be that hard for mack to sneak through dave’s belongings one of these days. they had years ahead to plan it out. used to? if it the three of them had only used to be paranormal investigators, than why was mack still facing the monsters they’d supposedly knocked back into the void or wherever they’d come from? that wasn’t fair. in that moment, they hated john, and dave, and pasha for whatever it was they’d pulled mack into. “i’m hungry.”

     Maybe he should find this sudden conversation segue weird, but then again, what kind of spawn of Dave and Pasha Novak would they be if WEIRD was not a part of the general description? A chuckle rumbled in his throat and he reached over, ruffled their hair. “You’re definitely Dave’s kid.  But I’m not the cookin’ type, Mack. We know this already.” There had been an incident with him trying to deep fry a turkey for Thanksgiving once and he managed to just walk away with a few third degree burns and another ruined holiday under his belt. “So, you pick the place, and I’ll buy.”

          snoring from all sides and birds chirping just on the other side of a window. pulled blinds and a scattering of trash on hardwood flooring – such is the atmosphere of a morning after partying, when the world seems to be asleep. iris is just another unconscious addition to the scenery, and she’d be hard pressed to find herself awoken by a stranger.

     It was too early in the morning for this shit, but if he wanted to pay rent this week, he might should leave and go to work. A stop was made on the way over to the bed, a cold slice of pizza consumed as breakfast-on-the-go from an open box on the floor. Usually he would leave the dead to the world to their comforts out of courtesy, but his jacket was trapped under her---and presumably his keys.       “Okay. . .’scuse me here, Sleeping Beauty.” He gently pushed her shoulder, hoping maybe she’d roll over on her own, and that this wouldn’t require any extra manhandling.

       her concurrence comes out on an exhale, sounding a lot more tired than she should be – and isn’t that the god’s honest truth. people are exhausting. ( even the ones she likes. especially the ones she likes, maybe, with all that energy being put into getting along, putting them at ease, being likeable – )

                                     she catches the shadow skimming around john’s eyes, recognises it from her own when she’s been thinking about too much, and it threatens at her convictions to avoid the beer. even though she was the one to bring it up in the first place. truth is : she’d kind of been hoping he’d forgotten.

                     ‘ … fine. but – ’ her voice halts a moment, something jolting softly in her stomach at the playful prodding to her shoulder, the tiniest of scarcely audible hitches in her breath. physical touch always goes one of two ways : either a shrinking away, or the reminder of an ache for affection she keeps forgetting is there. keeps forgetting that it gets neglected. she wonders if it should be troubling, that john seems to pretty consistently wake the latter, even after the time apart, even after never really being that close. probably. a finger lifts, gently warning, and though her lips find a slight smile, there’s something deadly serious ( a mother hen, alpha wolf sort of nature he’s not encountered before, from her at least ) in her eyes. ‘ when i say you’re cut off, i mean it. no ifs ands or buts. ¿entiendes? ’

      It’s difficult to keep a true mooching lowlife like him distracted for long. After all, alcohol had been a part of the invitation inside, and John is all too happy to sink into his regular bad habits. The sad reality of the situation is he doesn’t really even view it as a problem. The addiction has been so ingrained into his life that it’s as normal as getting up to take a morning piss or lighting a cigarette. He just doesn’t think about it anymore outside of ‘Need X amount of money for beer’ each week.         Well---he doesn’t contemplate it as an issue until she presses the ultimatum. Surprise rocks his expression for a moment. Nobody’s tried to limit him before, and it’s a bit of a trip honestly. 

     “Uh...sure. That’s fine.” It’s not a perfect recovery, and honestly there’s still a hint of questioning in his gaze. For now, it’s probably better that he doesn’t press the issue unless he wants to get shooed out of her place completely. “I capiche, Godfather.”

     “Oh, alright then. Maybe just being prepared in case something shows up? ” It seemed difficult to trace how one actually deal with the situation around here. “Seems like that would be a pretty useful weapon to have around, easy to carry and effective. ”

    “What?” It takes a couple seconds before he gets it. “Oh, NO. I mean. . .I think I was in the bathroom for most of that.” Naturally, crushing up a few pills and having a quick snort before hitting the floor again. “I was lookin’ at your hair actually.”

             What had initially seemed like a wise idea had begun to show its flaws as the corn syrup and fluffy cake worked its way slowly through my body. Why did I get a double stack? Why had that seemed like a good idea? I took a long drink from my coffee, forcing myself to pretend it would help.

            “Um…” That’s not how you say ‘yes’, Dave. That’s not how you make it stop. I mean, it was a joke though, right? Was I really trying to tell my best friend, one of the few people I gave an actual shit about, not to joke with me?

                                                 But I didn’t actually believe this.

             I realized we’d gone real quiet. “Why do you send them?”

     "Well. . .” How did he even begin to try and explain this? On his end, it had creeped from bromance into the Land of Questionable Sexuality. The main problem in this was...he couldn’t gauge how Dave would handle this. Granted, did any guy really know what to do in this situation when it was his best friend?       “I guess a couple of times were for shits and giggles.” He pawed at one of the remaining pancakes on his plate, cutting it into fourths and then into eighths. That was truth enough. It’d been tear inducing hilarious at first. “Then you know. . .” He shrugged his shoulders, couldn’t quite look at Dave. “It got sort of. . .GAY.”

The disc was already in the DVD player in anticipation of his arrival, so I flipped over to the right AV channel, pressed play, and immediately tossed the remote to the side. It was relieved of all further duties until it was time to watch a new disc.

“Okay, Kitchen Nightmares. Sounds pretty much straight forward.”

As the show came on, John surrendered his attention briefly, hand halfway to his mouth. By the looks of it, it would be BRUTAL in gross out factor but exactly to his liking. But this would be the point where he shoved as much food into his mouth anyway. He wouldn’t fail to eat in the face of what would make most people gag on just principle. 

“I’d put money on maggots,” he mumbled through half chewed fries that were quickly washed down with healthy slug of soda, followed with a satisfied sort of hissing AH. “Doesn’t he have like...a hotel show, too? Man’s got his fingers in a lot of pies.”

did that come out a little too brisk? probably. she’s banking on john not reading much of anything into it. all amy knows for sure is that she doesn’t want to hear any details about how they know each other – which is weird on its own, given that she doesn’t really care what john does, or with whom, so long as he’s not being completely stupid about it. so long as everyone’s safe and happy, and whatnot.

and she’s gone before he can say anything else, returning a few moments later in a fresh shirt, tossing the old one directly into the washing machine on the way. (really, she should probably shower, too, but that can wait for when she doesn’t have company.)

‘ so – anyway. what’ve you been up to? ’ … it hasn’t been that long since she last saw him. not even long enough for there to be anything newsworthy. talk about awkward. ‘ same old, same old? ’

Small indeed though. Most of the girls around here, he knows one of three ways: high school, work, and dating. He probably has more awkward run-ins with ex-girlfriends than most guys his age do. But he’s never been great about holding down anything that might be good for him outside of Franny Rivington. But that’s a new development. 

John finds himself a nice little spot to prop up against, gets comfortable while she’s gone to change. His shoulders rise and fall in answer to her question when she returns, but it’s getting easier to be in her company without feeling so at odds with how things are changing in their close knit group of weirdness.  “Work. Sleep. Fight a few creepy crawlies on the way.” Drink a little too much, sleep too little, but details schmetails. “You’re on summer break now, right?” Dave did say she’d been taking classes. At least, he thought that was what he told him. He’s never had the most reliable memory.
