She could almost make a home out of her coat and the crook of Grian’s arm, the cool evening breeze on her cheeks, a thermos of tea between them. A catlike yawn crawls up her throat, tired eyes flitting from patch of sky to patch of sky, painted silver with starlight. “This is what it looked like in Colorado.” The first words of home – home-home – she’s spoken in years feel like pine-beetles gnawing her ribs to hollows. “Way up in the mountains.”
Unmentioned: that the first and last time she went, she was ten.
Unmentioned: that her father was the one to take her.
Unmentioned: she feels like she could be with him now.
Grian is not her father. Millie has to remind herself of that frequently – he’s not her father, and she is not his child, and she should not impose herself as such. (Do not be his daughter, a voice chants to the beat of her heart, scrapping, snarling, good girl gone sour.)
But like this, it’s hard not to feel like she could be. He smells the way Christopher did and his shoulders stretch just as wide. Her place at his side feels like it could have been made for her, the way she fits into it, a middle piece of a jigsaw puzzle. They understand one another in their own secret language where neither speaks but entire conversations fill the room, floor to ceiling.
Grian is not her father, but hell if she doesn’t wish with all her being he was. “We should go sometime.”
hands on her hips,
“The kind of person that would also want to be told the same? If there was?”
she wasn’t about to be embarrassed and walk around like that.
“Plenty of people would ignore it and let you go on with life, thinking you’ve got nothing on you. They are difficult like that.”
I’m not the mom friend, I’m the dad friend: tries to take care of his friends but is too distant and emotionally clumsy to be any good at it
Curiosity killed the cat …
and satisfaction murder brought it back.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT MEME repost. do not reblog.
FULL NAME: Grian Elizabeth Fife GENDER & SEXUALITY: Cis Male || Heterosexual ETHNICITY & SPECIES: European || Death BIRTHPLACE & BIRTHDATE: Limbo || 1666-thereabouts
GUILTY PLEASURES: Carving designs into his skin to experience pain, which is still such a strange and foreign feeling to him.
PHOBIAS: Drowning, taphophobia, suffocation
WHAT THEY WOULD BE INFAMOUS FOR: Grian will never admit his hand in the death of Thomas DeSimone, who attempted to rape Henry Hill’s wife, Karen. And who happened to have killed two Gambino mobsters. He was close with the Gambinos. They had him over for supper. He stayed close with them, performing additional tasks until he left Chicago.
WHAT HAVE THEY/WOULD THEY HAVE GOTTEN ARRESTED FOR: Grian could be arrested for murder, extortion, drug smuggling, providing alcohol to minors, tax evasion, stealing, and battery. Somehow, he’s managed to make it out. As long as he continues to disappear into the crowds. Eventually, people will stop looking for someone who doesn’t exist, especially if they don’t look the same anymore.
CHARACTER YOU SHIP THEM WITH: Grian’s main ship is with @teinesmuirich, but his first love was Ruth, a dancer with a god-awful cockney accent and clever wits about her. A lot of what he remembers her for is idealizing. He experienced love and she died, so there is no factual remembering. Only reminiscing. Since then, he has never loved quite as intensely. However, he continues to idealize those he does love. In his mind, they are perfect and always will be, no matter what they do, or how many times he dies for them.
CHARACTER MOST LIKELY TO MURDER THEM: Criminals, people wanting to kill, anyone really.
FAVOURITE BOOK GENRE: Fantasy and comedy.
LEAST FAVOURITE BOOK CLICHÉ: “The maid did it” whodunits. However, what Grian reads is satire of cliches.
TALENTS OR POWERS: Grian’s talents are for art and composition, much like his powers. He is immortal and capable of changing his appearance with some difficulty and pain on his behalf (eye color is changed by regrowing eyes, height is achieved by ridiculously fast growth spurts, etc.). Grian is very good at running from things that bother him (hence why he is on earth and renounced his powers as Death).
WHY SOMEONE MIGHT LOVE THEM: Grian is passionate about art, interested in human emotions, and an avid listener. He is loyal as he can be, but isn’t as loyal as some humans. Grian tries to see both sides of an argument and ends up somewhere between most of the time.
WHY SOMEONE MIGHT HATE THEM: A bit afraid of commitment. Not to mention that he has practically no actual opinions of his own. Most of what he “believes” is just stolen from other people, so when forced to actually make an opinion, he often fails.
HOW THEY CHANGE: Grian forgets who he is early on, has an ugly reminder, and never allows him to forget after that. Eventually, he learns to stop running from his fears--and the initial reason he left Reaping--and faces his own eventual end. Rippers become corrupt and die after a certain number of souls. This kills a great deal of people. From the mass death, a new Ripper becomes. Grian must face his own destruction.
WHY YOU LOVE THEM: WHY?? All-in-all, Grian is a decent earth-dweller. He cares, although he may not have proper feelings or know what to do with them, he will eventually carry on and carry out the proper end of things. It is how it must be. Meanwhile, he’s just someone to make you less lonely.
