republicans switched specifically because they saw how single minded racist Southerners were and realized they could get them to vote for any republican so long as part of their platform oppressed minorities. and it’s not even up for debate like “trickle down economics”, they called it the Southern Strategy and it is probably the single greatest key to their success to this day.
