this fic is for @d1strict99's event!!! wc: 969
prompt: prompt: fluff + childhood friends to lovers + "can't you just stay here and kiss me forever?" + heart-to-heart conversation + alternate universe
Even though Tenma's idol era was most certainly finished, there were evenings that felt like you could turn on the TV and see the live broadcast performance. It was after long nights of practice and weeks of tours that he would come back home exhausted and lean his head on your shoulder, his makeup getting on your shirt as he gripped you tightly. You would share a laugh, laughing at the fact that you'd have to wear a different shirt to sleep, and he would have his stupidly big grin on full display. Tonight would have to be one of those nights, but he no longer would have to smudge your shirt with his foundation. Instead, you'd almost trip over his big manager's bag, and he'd catch you. Every part of you wouldn't trade those moments for the world, but coming home sooner was most certainly better.
As you tidied the dinner table, you left his portion in the microwave so it wouldn't get cold as quickly, and so he could reheat it when he arrived. The table was far too big for a party of one, but for two, it wasn't so bad. Despite the fact that the flowers he'd gotten you sat on the far right, and next to it was a picture of the two of you when you were young, the table felt disproportionately large. You pictured him in the place he sat every day, for breakfast and dinner, and it made sense for the table to be that way- but looking at it now, it still felt a little wrong.
"When will you be home?" you texted him. You didn't want to call; maybe he was driving. Waiting for his reply, you sat yourself down on your chair. As you scrolled through social media, hoping to pass the time quickly, his contact replaced the video you were watching, and you clicked on the green button to accept his call right away.
"Hello?" his voice came through, the wind making it a bit difficult to hear.
"Mhm. I can hear you. Are you on your way home?"
"Yeah, give me… about 10 minutes, yeah? But how about we chat for a little bit while I'm on my way home? It's been a week; I miss you a lot."
You giggled. This man was so silly; he'd called you every day after all the performances.
"Sure, sure. What did you want to talk about?" you moved to the couch to sit a bit more comfortably. The way Tenma loved to share the little things was absolutely charming, compared to the intensity he had when he was still performing. According to him, he had all those thoughts he wanted to share with you at that time too, but he was too busy.
He told you about a kid he saw at a meet-and-greet who recognized him, and he said that he was training to become an idol. He'd come to see the group Tenma was managing, but it turned out that he was a huge Tenma fan when he was younger. Of course, he accepted the kid's compliments and encouraged him to continue supporting the groups that are active now. He said he'd be curious to see if the kid would be able to chase his dreams, and he'd support him if he does.
"Is this kid in an agency?" you asked, wanting to search him up. Sometimes you could get information on trainees. Tenma had a few fans more than you before he debuted, back in his day.
"I think so. I hinted to him he ought to be careful to show his full face like that in public, but he said that he was happy to meet me. He said he was training there and might transfer to my former company."
"Oh, they'd be sure to like that story," you giggled. A lot of the people at Tenma's old agency still quite liked him, and they sometimes offered him to do a special stage or MC. The money was good, but both of you agreed that he wouldn't enjoy it anymore. It was the time for another generation of idols to make their mark, and he was content watching.
"He has that fighting spirit in him. I think he'll do well. I wish I could see his performances; I think they'd be fun to watch."
"Hold on, give me a moment to search." you looked up the kid's name, and it turned out, he was doing quite well for a trainee. His company allowed him to post clips and he was careful of his public image. "I'll send you the account. Do you want to watch them together when you get home?"
The call hung up before you got a chance to receive an answer. Before you dialed back in confusion, you were lucky to hear the click of the front door's lock being opened. You got up from the couch, and in a usual chain of unlucky circumstances, your toes hit his bag and he caught you before you fell.
He brought you back to your feet, and his lips pressed against your forehead again and again and again. His palms cupped your cheeks, and his stupidly big grin told you that he surely forgot everything that had happened at work this week in this moment.
With his stomach growling, he tried to break away from you and to reach for the microwave buttons, but you hadn't had enough yet. You could still feel the impression of his lips upon your forehead, and they needed to be there now.
"Can't you stay here and kiss me forever?"
He gave you one more kiss. "How about I kiss you again after I've eaten dinner? And let's watch those videos. I want to see his skill."
little announcement! going on a short (?) break to clear some backlog off @nazukisser then i'll be back! i'll also probably change my theme i think its very due and i feel unorganized lolll

『 UP NEXT : CHAPTER 4 』
You missed how your life was just a few minutes ago when you’d started your math homework- the words all made sense and the notes explained it all. While it still was work, it at least had steady progress. The words flew in one by one, and you didn’t stop for hours just to do one small thing. These math problems stared at you just as you stared at them. Those were numbers for sure- what the hell was a formula? The formula? Even a formula? Notes? … logic? The teacher said the homework problems were doozies, but he didn’t make them impossible… surely.
You scrolled through your phone to find someone who might know how to do the problems.
If Shinbou didn't respond within 10 minutes, she wouldn't respond until tomorrow.
Despite your familiarity with Shirabu in English class, there were too many unknowns. Did he even have the same math teacher as you? Was he good at math? It would be rude to ask him for help if he wasn’t confident, right? But who else was awake? Homework being graded on accuracy on a tight deadline didn’t exactly help the need to actually take it slow and absorb the material. It wasn’t like you had many other choices, though- and giving up would mean points that could make or break your grade. It was worth a try.
As you put your phone down, you stare at the completed homework. All of that handwriting was yours, and you could explain each one of the steps you used. For something you dreaded, it was finally over, and the feeling of it being finished didn’t want to leave just yet. Even though, you put the homework back into your bag for school tomorrow and brought your laptop out in front of you.
“Where the hell are the project documents…” you mumbled as you searched your computer.
You opened the document Shirabu shared. The person who made a clean outline with clear comments stood out compared to the guy on call who mumbled about teammates who acted in their own ego. Despite those being the exact same person in reality, acknowledging that reality brought two sides of him few saw at once. Even as you answered the questions and searched the book for the quotes you needed, you could see what notes he might have written in his copy, what sentences he might have highlighted. And for the guy who listened intently to the nonsense that occupied consecutive moments of distraction, he didn’t leave much room for extra things in the report.
Everything was early on Saturday- when you woke up, lunch, and when you left was all earlier than planned.
As soon as you sat down at a booth in the back of the café, you set the buzzer for your order on the table. You held the laptop tightly as you brought it from your backpack to the table in front of you, thinking of nothing but the order you were waiting for and the half-finished project report with comments that still needed fixing. You could almost feel the stare that came from a certain player on the volleyball team if he found out you’d hardly worked on it.
“I got you a cookie.” the voice was from in front of you. Even though it was pretty obvious who was there, you lowered your laptop’s angle to see who it was. Oh, so Shirabu wears sweats on the weekends.
“Thanks,” you brought the cookie towards you and took a bite. “Oh, it’s good.”
“You said you liked this flavor in class.” he pointed at the cookie.
“Oh,” you didn’t remember saying that, but he wasn’t wrong at all.
The look in Shirabu's eyes wasn't quite a lecture, but it wasn't carefree in the slightest- not that he was ever carefree, but what thought did he have this time?
"How many days in a row have you slept late?" ah, disappointment. You stared down at the keyboard. The soft glow provided no comfort.
"I dunno…" you didn't dare to face him.
"You've been tired for a few days now. Drink this before you go to bed and no screens right before. Read a book and drink tea. It's good for you and you'll get sleepy." he slid a small bag across the table, a reusable one. Tea and a plushie.
"Why a plushie tho?" that wasn't part of a normal package.
"You have a few of them on your bed. They wouldn't be there if they didn't help you sleep, right?" You laughed at his statement. It wasn't illogical, but that was a rare statement.
"Sorry I'm late," Azuma set down her bag. "I'll start the topic report now and I can probably finish in a couple of hours. English isn't too hard for me. Do you guys have the analysis ready?" she looked at the two of you. She was here for business. Shirabu explained that it was almost done and she could pretty much use it for her short topic report. She got to work straight away, sipping away at her lemonade while she was at it.
Ando, on the other hand, arrived right on the agreed upon time, huffing and puffing about the journey there. The energy of the group paid no mind to such ramblings in a time of focus. The cookie was long gone by the time all the work was completed.
"Alright, since I'm done with my part, I'm going to share it so you can put whatever small edits you want. Let me know if anything big needs changing. I have to watch my baby cousins, so see you guys." Azuma was gone in a flash. Even though the analysis was done, you and Shirabu worked until after Ando had left as well.
Despite having had an entire cookie and drink while working, your stomach could not stop rumbling. Shirabu blinked at you. It was just once, but you couldn't tell what he was blinking at you for. Perhaps your stomach? Because of your proximity to the growl, it was difficult to tell how loud it really was…
"Do you want to grab dinner? There's an Italian restaurant a couple of doors down." he grabbed both his stuff and yours off the booth. He already had your things, could you even say no?

You had just noticed the rain when you felt a tug from your backpack. You faced the man in front of you- Shirabu.
"I'll hold our umbrella." he put the umbrella in the hand away from the two of you and brought it towards the middle.
"Won't you get tired of holding it like that?" you took his hand regardless, and the two of you started walking away from the building where the lecture hall was located.
"I'm fine, don't worry about me." he brought himself closer to you.
"Oh, two things. I need to fix my pin and do you wanna get snacks?" you looked up at him. That smile meant a yes. His smile turned into a slight pout as you let go of his hand to fix your pin. He started walking a little bit faster.
"Lonely much?" you grabbed onto the handle of his backpack, and as you came up to him, he didn't give you his hand right away.
"There," he pinched your cheek. He took your hand again, asking which snack you wanted for today.
Beep Beep Beep Beep. One second of rest. Beep Beep Beep Beep. With the sensation of the smoothness of his alarm still fresh, Shirabu brought his hand to his eyes to rub it first, then to his forehead. Ah shit, he still had a fever. The dorm chair left a bad ache in his thighs, but he got up and stretched anyways. He checked the time- 8:15 AM. The exam was at 9.
Despite his haste, something about the picture of the picture on his bedside table didn't seem right. It was a picture of the Shiratorizawa Volleyball Club, after they had lost to Karasuno his 2nd year and the team's faces were stained with friction from rubbing their tears. Regardless, Washijou-sensei had still wanted a picture. It served as a reminder to keep going despite failures and usually worked, but for Shirabu at that moment, this was the wrong picture. It was the same as always and he had never changed it, so there was no logical reason it should have been incorrect.
Yet, where was the picture of the two of you on your first date at that cafe just outside of campus? He remembered so much- the frame you'd decorated with felt and paint, the round mahogany table holding the boba order you always got and supporting his hand that held his face- he couldn't stop staring at you that day. Yet, despite remembering the taste of the coffee he'd bought that day and the number of times you mentioned "steak" that afternoon, the proportions of your face and what haircut you had and the exact components of your outfit slipped away. He squinted hard, trying to recreate the image, pretending the picture and the frame were both what it was supposed to be.
"I don't have time for this." he forced himself into the bathroom. He washed his face was quickly and roughly. 8:30. He put on the first outfit he could find, stuffed his backpack with everything he needed for the exam, and rushed out the door. The wind blasting in his face as he ran certainly messed up the hair he he would have fixed that morning, but it felt surprisingly good- he knew you wouldn't care for it all that much. Without much sleep or confidence, he had no choice but to look for comfort in you.
Having rushed into the exam hall, the first empty seat he could find was in the 4th to last row. He set his backpack beside him and took out his calculator and allowed cheat sheet. An exam was handed to him, and he hoped to scribble on his name before the timer started.
"You may now start the exam!" The professor gleamed, taking a seat by her assistants. Shirabu wished he had that energy and confidence.
As soon as he flipped to the first page, his mind was blank. He scanned each question. He was pretty sure about which formulas to use, but pretty quickly, he could see what was wrong. He didn't have time for this kind of uncertainty. He flipped to the second page and the third page, hoping for easier questions he would have studied last night. He was unsure about every question.
Despite that panic, Shirabu knew he had to simply try each question, and if he failed such an exam with his best efforts, it meant he didn't prepare well enough- which he already knew. Regardless, there was no other choice but to try.
As he attempted each problem, he looked to the pen that wrote smoothly for every exam and soothed his worries about malfunctions- there hadn't been any with this pen. The gel ink ran smoothly across the paper, leaving him with nothing but his thoughts to worry about. Yet, between questions, the pen's clover theme did nothing but distract him. This was your pen; it was among the numerous writing utensils you took out before every exam, and you'd lent it to him once. You told him he could keep it.
Yet, before the last question he'd attempt for this exam, there was nothing he could think to himself but the truth: it was rumored to be a good pen, and he'd gotten it on sale. It worked as expected, and he'd been able to work distraction-free numerous times with it. There would have been nothing more comforting for Shirabu to rest in your arms after the exam, for how his tears longed for your fingers and cheeks craved the sensation of your embrace. One drop landed on the page, and he wiped the tears away. One question echoed his mind against his will: where are you?
On the way out of the exam, Shirabu wanted nothing more than to return to bed. A part of him wished to see you again, as he did this morning before his scrambled preparation for the exam he most certainly bombed. But even if you didn't come to him when his face hit the pillows, he simply didn't want to think of you anymore, because where are you?
Shirabu trudged through the campus one step at a time, the books and miscellaneous items hitting the front and the back of his backpack as he walked.
That tug. He turned his head around. You weren't there. His headache throbbed as he stood in the middle of the path. He knew. He knew everything but reason dictated your your absence. With reason, the only wisdom he knew, he could not win.

AHHHH, I saw the post late… THANK YOU!!! Clarence is so perfect, and literally in the first paragraph I was already agreeing. I haven’t been able to progress much in the main story bc I’ve been busy, BUT EVEN IN THE VERY FIRST WORLD, THAT QUALITY OF HIS SHINES THROUGH. Did MC know him reallyyy personally? No. Did he believe MC’s words—or at least the urgency in her voice? Hell yeah.
Everything written in this post is so tooth‑achingly sweet that I don’t even know what to say 🥹 (Okay, that’s a lie—I could yap on and on rn, but this ask is already so long, so I’m holding back)
Seeing Alkaid as the runner‑up made me think back on the details I wrote, and yeah… it makes sense. Quite a few parts in it “matched” with the things Alkaid does. Esp the whole photography and gardening
