Still the freakiest fact about him is that despite being as tall as a person or more, he banged out these beauties in a day or two at most (and smaller ones ina matter of hours). The longest he spent on a painting, at age 81, to make his largest ever painting, was TEN DAYS:

It is 2.9×4.3 meters large. That’s 9'4"×14'1" for people in other measurement systems. It’s HUGE. There are artists out there that spend years on paintings much smaller than this. He was not one of them.

He also didn’t only paint the sea, but he MOSTLY painted the sea. Very few people could draw light filtering through waves the way this guy did and apparently it was tied into his layering technique that allowed him to paint so goddamn fast.

He is obviously my most favorite painter ever.

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), Medicine, 1900-1907. - The Klimt University of Vienna Ceiling Paintings, also known as the Faculty Paintings, were a series of paintings made by Gustav Klimt for the ceiling of the University of Vienna’s Great Hall between the years of 1900-1907. In 1894, Klimt was commissioned to paint the ceiling. Upon presenting his paintings, Philosophy, Medicine and Jurisprudence, Klimt came under attack for ‘pornography’ and ‘perverted excess’ in the paintings. None of the paintings would go on display in the University. In May 1945, it is contended that all three paintings were destroyed when retreating SS forces set fire to the building they were housed in. i think anne magills paintings and Edward hoppers are like .. exact opposites. hoppers has the distinct clarity to it, a sharpness in the lines and the angles that contributes to an overwhelming sense of loneliness in almost every one of his paintings. even in his paintings that dont portray isolation there is a feeling of separation

loneliness vs. aloneness

magill, on the other hand, has this haziness to her paintings that emanates a warmth even when the subjects in her paintings are alone.

both paintings feel so comforting, and even in the second one where the girl is alone she is still in the presence of the visceral world around her - there’s a familiarity in magills painting that she captures nicely.

i guess i just think it’s interesting because hopper and magill are two of my favorite artists and they paint similar scenes with very different tones -

I’ve always thought that hoppers paintings are a snapshot of urban loneliness - the distinctness of it, the use of cool colors, the stark contrast between the people and their settings - whereas magills paintings seem almost like memories - their use of haziness and blurriness is exactly how someone wild remember something, indistinct, full of feeling and lacking detail

Peter Chan’s “For the Love of Gold” at Galerie Youn.

A selection of works from artist Peter Chan’s recent exhibition “For the Love of Gold,” which had been virtually on view at Galerie Youn in Montreal, Canada.

Within many of Chan’s paintings, we see characters enthralled by golden objects, inspecting them, meditating on them, measuring their worth.

Chan hopes the viewer will question their own attraction to the mesmerizing metal and will consider gold’s immutable power to buttress civilization through currency, commerce, and conceptions of cost.

Most importantly, “For the Love of Gold” demonstrates Chan’s astounding ability as a painter of texture and light; of surface and refection. It establishes him as a prodigious talent, effectively achieving the tricky task of replicating and communicating the spellbinding beauty of gold.

With this exhibition, Peter has earned his place among the illustrious artists of history, whose paintings have been celebrated, discussed, and valued down through the ages.

Close ups of the pieces surrounding the abstract Jawbreaker piece I made. I chose some of the more interesting objects I collected.

The codes are: BRK=Broken things. CHI= General childhood memories. MEM=A specific memory. And not pictured; DAD=Items related to my father.

The skeleton glows in the dark and used to be a keychain. It was my brothers and I always wanted it. He finally gave it to me when I was about 13. The D is my brother's initial.

The dinosaur is a wind up toy I bought a few years ago. I used to wind it up and watch it walk across the table when I got anxious. That's what the A stands for.

The sheep is a plastic toy that is probably as old as I am. One leg broke off about a year ago and the other has been missing for years. The 24 is my brother's age now, the sheep originally belonged to him.

The rocking horse is an old bath toy. The 5 for my young age when I would play with it.

The bracelet was made by my brother when he was 4 in play school. He made it for me when I was a baby.

The wings broke off an angel statue that I no longer have. It was a gift from my grandaunt's friend from Tipperary that my friend broke by accident. I threw away the angel but kept the wings? I'm not sure why I did that.

I found the stretchy man sans head while I was looking for objects for this project. I have no idea how long it was in my room for. My family would go on little holidays to Clare when I was younger and we always took the ferry. There's a little shop where the ferry lands in Clare that sells these stretchy yellow guys. That's what the C in the code is for.

The Luigi doll is one of those string keychains you can buy at the stalls in Killarney. I used to keep him in my pocket for when I got anxious when I was about 17. One day I skipped a mental health talk group session because I was too nervous to go, so I sat in St John's Church in Tralee for an hour waiting to be picked up. A woman asked me if I was alright and gave me a medallion. I put it in my pocket where it got wound around Luigi's neck, and I never took it off.

Jawbreaker

My suitcase project installation. I collected objects that are old, broken or seemingly meaningless to put in my suitcase. I created codes for these objects and tagged them to make them seem more important and like they are artifacts in a museum.

I focused on a year old jawbreaker for an abstract piece in the middle for the studies of some of the other items to go around.

These objects are all in some way important to me although they might look worthless. That is what I wanted to explore with this project.

Dan Lam’s “Sweetmeats” at Hashimoto Contemporary.

Currently virtually on view at Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco, California is artist Dan Lam’s solo exhibition, “Sweetmeats.”

Returning for her third solo exhibition with the gallery, Lam’s organic sculptures are at once reminiscent of candy colored desserts and toxin laden sea creatures. Each work lures the viewer in closer, at their own peril.

Continuing her exploration of the push and pull of opposing ideas within her work, the works in Sweetmeats embody the allure of beautiful confections and their propensity towards over indulgence and sickness. The soft, oozing textures of the work are sensual, “something to be savored,” while also hinting at hidden dangers. Capturing a sense of movement and organic growth, each form spills forth from a hidden internal structure or spring waiting to ensnare the viewer.

Dan Lam’s work continues to evolve utilizing new materials and processes to create new forms, textures and color. This body of sculptures incorporates a slower, more methodical resin technique allowing the artist to “spend more time with each mark” within the works. New glazing and finishing techniques create new depths and riots of color, adding to the ever present sense of experimentation, curiosity and play within her work.
