B.Ed My theme for the movement project based on the movement of fashion on the human body, how the clothes move to create a cohesive design and show how the fabric moves against the lines of the body.

Sketchbook work:

Working from a photograph I took of my friend, I drew a sketch of her wearing a red dress. Using alcohol markers, coloring pencils and paint markers I drew in the details of the dress and the ruffles.

I added a bow to this page using paint markers and colouring pencils.

This was my first time attempting to draw blonde/highlighted hair and I found it particularly difficult. My friend ended up looking ginger in this particular drawing!

Sketchbook work:

Working from a photograph I took of my friend, I drew a sketch of the way the dress fit her body. Using coloring pencils I drew in the details of the dress and the ruching.

I don’t like the outcome of this drawing but I do like the vibrancy of the coloring pencils and the original sketch I drew.

Ceramics:

Using clay I tried to recreate the different movements of fabric, the ruffles, fabric hanging, pleating and silk that has been bunched up.

I don’t really like how these pieces turned out except for the bunched up silk one ( top left ), I feel that they don’t look as aesthetically pleasing to the eye as the imprints that I made previously using all different types of materials.

The clay was very pliable to work with but the pleats that I attempted to create did break and cracked a bit when drying. I enjoyed working with the clay but didn’t like the outcome.

Ceramics:

Using different materials, such as lace, flowers and bows, I imprinted the following items on pieces of rolled clay.

For the bow, I disassembled a bow clip and pressed it into a rolled out piece of clay and rolled over the bow and the clay to get the imprint of the folds and creases on the clay. Then I cut out the shape surrounding the bow imprint.

For the lace, I found a lace trim that I had used in a previous sewing project and rolled the piece of lace ribbon into a piece of rolled out clay. The imprint came out brilliantly and is very clear to see the designs that are on the lace trim. I then cut out the ribbon from the slab of clay and curved it into a lettuce trim curve.

For the last piece, I trimmed a clipping of baby’s breath flower and pressed it into a slab of clay to imitate floral patterns usually found on different fabrics. The imprint came out beautifully and the different lines are very visible and detailed.

Work in progress:

Studying the pictures I previously took of my friends where I looked at how clothes move on the body, I decided to paint one of the pictures where my friend is wearing a ruffles dress.

I decided to use this photo as the ruffles on the dress create movement when the person is wearing it. In this picture, my friend is moving around and it shows how the dress moves on the body.

First I started off with a quick sketch to mark where I start colour blocking, then I blocked in the background with a black acrylic paint marker, then I blocked in the colour of the dress with a red acrylic paint marker.

Figure painting:

1st we were given 3 colours of acrylic paint, red, yellow and blue. We had to mix all three together and I got a dark brown colour. Then we had to take 1/3 of the dark brown and add white to the mixture to create a mid tone, then we had to take 1/3 of the mid tone and add more white to create a light tone.

2nd we were given a flat chunky square brush and were told to use one colour and sketch a rough outline of the model.

3rd we were told to fill in the walls, floor and body with the appropriate paint tones depending on the lighting of where we were standing in the room with the view of our model.

4th we were told to create more depth with the direction of light on the floor and walls.

5th we were then allowed to add in the shades of light to our paintings of the models body

I enjoyed the process of being able to paint so freely and paint what I saw, however I do not like the outcome of this painting and believe that I made the poor model look a bit like a snowman. I need to work on body proportion and how to properly shade using acrylic paint.

(I do not have any progress pictures due to protecting the privacy of the nude model)

Etching and Chine Collé:

Using my acetate sheet that I had etched the design of the bow onto it, I traced the shape of the bow onto tissue paper and cut it out. Then I added the tissue paper to the acetate sheet where the ink had seeped into the indents I had made when etching the bow into the acetate sheet and added powdered glue on top of the tissue paper to stick the paper and tissue paper together. I then added a damp sheet of paper and rolled them through the rolling press and it worked. I am really happy with the outcome of this piece and my study of accessories in fashion.

Etching:

Using my previous mono print to trace, I started to etch the design of the bow onto a sheet of acetate using an etching tool. Then I added ink to the acetate sheet and rubbed off the ink with a cloth, leaving ink in between the indents made with the knife. Then I got a damp sheet of paper and rolled the sheet of acetate through the roller with the damp sheet on top of the acetate sheet. The damp paper absorbed the ink when it was rolled through the rolling press and imprinted the design onto the sheet.

Mono printing:

For these mono prints I decided to look at the movement in accessories that I had photographed previously.

First I rolled out oil based ink onto an acetate sheet, then I added a sheet of paper on top of the acetate sheet and began to draw on the sheet covering the ink rolled acetate sheet. After completing the drawing, I carefully peeled the sheet of paper off of acetate sheet to reveal the shaded version of my drawing.

These weren’t my favorite prints but the end result of the bow mono print was my favorite.

Primary research:

Looking at this photograph I had taken of my friend in a ruffle dress that showed great movement while she was wearing it, I decided that if I turn the image into black and white, that I would be able to see the shadows and movement more clearly. After turning the photo black and white I was surprised to see that it did in fact appear to have more of a look that the dress was flowing, so I decided to play around with a negative filter on the picture and a pink filter on the picture and these were the results. These images are great for me to understand that movement involved in this dress.

Primary research:

To capture the movement of fashion on the human body I asked my friends to model some outfits for me to use for my project. We played with the movement of all types of clothing such as dresses, skirts, tops, jackets and more. To capture the movement of accessories we added handbags, leg warmers, jewellery and bows. They both have consented to having me use these photographs in my project.

Secondary research:

I decided to create a collage of different ranges of models photographed in old vogue magazines that I have collected over the years. I carefully selected the right images that I think would fit this project and showed the movement of fashion on the different models body shapes. Then I cut these images out and carefully layered them to create this collage. I took pictures and zoomed in to create the first image as seen above and edited them to make each picture of each model stand out.

I really like the way the collage came out and it is probably one of my favourite images I have taken in my time at lsad.😊

MOVEMENT:

Primary research:

First I started off my research by making a brainstorm with ideas that I could develop going into the movement project for semester 2. I looked at 5 different possible ideas to base my project on and decided to choose the movement of fashion and accessories on the human body to develop further for this project.

Secondly I started to take notes on how I could develop my idea further and the steps I should follow and artists to research.

Display:

I added all of my pieces to the wall to display my journey throughout the duration of the assemble project. I chose the theme baking for this project and this display showcases the work I’ve done over these 10 weeks.

Printmaking:

I cut up an old milk carton and brought it in to etch baking utensils onto it to make a print.

First I drew the utensils on the carton with a sharpie, then I got a knife and traced the lines I had drawn. Then I covered the carton in black in and rubbed it off to add to the printing press.

Printmaking:

I cut out letters and an outline of a cows head that I had previously photographed out of textured wallpaper from the printing room. I then rolled oil based ink onto a sheet of acetate and added the wallpaper cut outs to the sheet of acetate. I rolled them through the printing press onto a piece of card. Unfortunately I again forgot to place the word milk correctly so I rolled it through the printing press correctly a second time. This created two pieces that look like they have been mirrored.

After creating these pieces I found out that kilm is actually powered milk used in Kenya, by one of the lecturers who had lived in Kenya.
