ITS NOT ABOUT YOU ITS AROUND YOU

I explored the theme "its not about you its around" through found objects from bags, my own and others. Creating prints inspired by airport security scanners as I find it interesting how many people have items in the bottom of their bags that are often forgotten about, I also like the colours and non organised placement of these items in security scanners so decided to show my found objects in a similar sense.

ASSESSMENT SET UP

The prints I decided to choose to hang for my assessment was one of my prints from when we first started the found object process as I really liked the outcome of this print and to show where my ideas had originally stemmed from. I also decided to choose three prints from my most recent found objects prints as Im very happy with how they turned out and feel as they show what I had been working on for the last few weeks of the project.

Carrying on from Monday I kept going with my found object prints, I decided to mix up some different colours that were slightly similar to the colours used before to see if they would change the outcome or the overall look of the prints. I finished up my canvas print which I was very happy with the outcome of. I also created a print with my found objects that resembles a bag to show what these objects would be typically found in.

Im very happy with my project overall for the time had to develop my concept and learn new processes, I really enjoyed the found objects process and this is something I will definitely try to create more work with in the future.

On the Monday after Easter, I went back to making my found object prints using the same objects as before and new objects I had collected over the break. I experimented with overlapping my silhouette prints with the plates that had the imprints from my silhouette prints, using both the same and different colours, Im very happy with the outcome of them as I feel they add more character and depth to the silhouettes. I also like the contrast between the pink and blues when I have decided to incorporate them within the same print.

I also started printing on a square of canvas which I enjoyed doing as it gave me more space to place bigger objects compared to the A3 pages I was working with in the week before Easter.

Jillian Mayer combined various materials and objects to create sculptural assemblages intended to be photographed from the monitors perspective of the X-ray security scanning machines. These have been in use for several decades, they came into regular usage after the September 11th attacks. She reanimates this apparatus by making aesthetic rather than utilitarian images through its lens.

What I really liked about the work Jillian made was how she laid out the objects used in certain ways, which I pulled inspiration from when creating my imprints onto my plates to then later print these imprints. I really enjoyed looking at these works that Jillian made and they inspired me in aspects of my work.

For my secondary research the main thing I had looked at that really inspired my work was airport security scans of bags and the contents within the bags, the reason I found the most inspiration from these was the overlap of different colours and how certain items show up as a denser colour to others. I also like how the items are show exactly how they are in the bag and all jumbled up and not placed in exact spots from being carried around. I definitely pulled a lot of my inspiration from these scanners throughout my project.

For my primary research I took photos of the contents of bags two of my housemates would use typically for nights out and a picture of my bag I would use everyday for college to show the difference in the contents but also how some of the contents overlap and are the same in each bag. I noticed that my college bag would contain things I use everyday while in studio but also items I would collect throughout the day and decide to throw into my bag and forget about. The two going out bags contain items you would typically pack purposefully before heading out but also have items you may have found or popped into your bag while out.

I liked the contrast of the reasoning for certain objects being in everyday bags compared to bags for going out and wanted to incorporate these both within my work.

Blazo Kovacevic's project 'Case' explores the access to an unobstructed view of our transparent lives, it points to something that usually goes unnoticed: the slightly presentation of our everyday belongings on security inspection screens.

In Blazos works he shows personal objects and even musical instruments carried around in the intimate interiors of cases, bags, purses and backpacks which reveals the complex aesthetics of the private and cherished, offering clues to our individual identities.

I really like the work Blazo has created as I find it very interesting how the contents of a simple everyday bag can vary so differently from person to person. I also like his style of security scanners which is something im interested in exploring in my work so I will definitely be looking to his work for inspiration.

In the week before Easter I went back to using the process of found objects to create prints, Im very happy with the overall outcome of these and the variation of colours used. The found items I used were items found in the bottom of my bag and to me these prints look like the scanners used in airports, I find this concept very interesting and have decided to make more work based on this concept so I have started collecting items from the bottoms of other peoples bags to show how objects vary from person to person.

Week 3, We explored electroetch which is an eco alternative to using acid to bite the metal to help create the print we had previously etched onto the plate. We started off bevelling our plates and etching onto them, we also coated our plates in soy sauce which we then washed off before placing it into the electroetch for 15 minutes.

After I had spoken to Susannah we decided I would move away creating abstract work and try to tie in a bit of realism into my work, which is something I wouldnt usually do but decided to give it a go to step out of my comfort zone. I decided to create a plate with images of items I would typically have in front of me or on my person when getting ready to go out or when Im out on a night out. Im happy with the outcome of these prints, I didnt particularly enjoy stepping out of my comfort zone with the type of work I was making but Im glad I did.

To finish up week 2 we made some woodblocks with Des, we based these off of a linear space we had seen in the studio to help get us thinking more about the brief. I had yet to work with woodblock before this I enjoyed the process but it was very different to work Im used to making as it can be a bit of a slower process to the way I would usually work. We also used the letter press to ink up and print our blocks which was interesting and definitely a way of printing I would like to explore and use more in the future.

I had another look at the theme of our brief "its not about you its around you" to try and develop my concept for the next few weeks, one of the main ideas I had decided to work with was going out culture for young people and looking at objects you would typically use for getting ready and unready, also things you would typically have in your bag when you decide to head out for the night. I wanted to use this as my concept because I find it interesting how the objects people use to get ready and unready are all typically the same but could vary slightly from person to person, the same goes for things you would throw into you bag for a night out.

Later on during the week we then went back to our found object and block prints and worked on trying to incorporate the two processes together on the prints we had previously made the week before. Im happy with the outcome of these as I like the overlapping of the different methods in each print and Im happy with the colours I had chosen as I feel they work well together.

In week 2 we made work using anthotype, which was a new process for a lot of us. We mixed up a dye using turmeric and alcohol to paint onto our pages before placing them into the UV lightbox to transfer images onto the pages, we also tried a method of leaving found objects on our stained pages in the sun to use natural UV to transfer the shapes and images. I enjoyed this process as it was something I had yet to try and I will definitely want to use this process in future projects.

We continued the day in the print studio, where we chose three of our line drawings from the morning to base our work off of. Des showed us how to create solid shapes and lines by using masking tape before inking up your plate or creating a stencil to place of your plate before inking. We did four passes within each print using different colours shapes and overlapping shapes we have used before. I found this really interesting as it showed me how to build up different layers within one print without making it too "heavy" or "crowded".

On Thursday morning with Des we drew up 5 line drawings of places where two planes met to give us a base to work off of in the print studio later on in the day. I found this helpful as it helped me look zoom in on certain parts of a large scale item and scale it dow to just a specific part of the item.

On the tuesday after St Patricks day we started printing with objects we had found or brought in from home, I really enjoyed this as it was a method I hadnt used before and found it interesting how the objects transferred onto both the acetate and the paper when put through the press. When printing these my favourite object to use was the corset I had brought in as I liked the details that came off when I had put just the corset through the press and the look the print gave when printed from the acetate.
