David Yates: There's something really compelling about this relationship between Dumbledore and Grindelwald. They are two men who I think had such a powerful love for each other, and you see in this movie how that love is tested and kind of ultimately broken. They have different visions of how they see the world, but you get a sense that they still deeply love each other, and one of the things I love about the climax of the third act, really, it's the end of that relationship. When I watch it and what our ambition with it is even though it's a magical kind of climax, if you like, of two men fighting, it's really about the end of any relationship. It's the end of a commitment, and you feel that when Dumbledore walks away from Grindelwald at the end. I hope that sort of resonates in that moment.

Someone finally uploaded a much clearer version of my favorite deleted scene that Iām forever obsessed with⦠so I had to share.Ā
There is a deleted scene with Albus and Aurelius in Nurmengard, y'all. š„ŗ
Wait. Albus could just turn up on Gellert's bedroom?
oh c'mon men, i saw this before

āā¦nostalgia for the only time in his life he felt fully understood.ā
Dumbledore has lived his life for over forty years, and yet the summer of 1899 was the only time he felt fully understood. The two short months he spent with Grindelwald meant more to him than the rest of his entire life.
Jude Law as Dan in Closer (2004)
Do you ever think about how Grindelwald has to navigate his sexuality? That whole being a strong powerful dark lord heās still a gay man living in 1920-1930s which is at least in the muggle world, illegal.
And donāt give me that āwizards donāt discriminate.ā The WW is still racist and misogynistic itās not a far cry they are homophobic too.
I think grindelwald is in a difficult position, I canāt imagine heād ever hid who he was but his sexuality if publish would definitely be used against by the ministry. Theres also likely some traditional pureblood men who see Gellert the as masculine ideal and his sexuality kinda shatters it.
So how would Gellert navigate it? I do think heād see homophobia as a muggle export and be a little of the reason he dislikes them so much. I also imagine if anyone said anything homophobic towards them he would not let it slide. However would he not be as open to gain followers? Would he tone down his more ādiva ness.ā So that he had more support? Iām not so sure.
What do you guys think?
This is interspersed with headcanonsā¦
The FB movies paint Gellert as someone whoās immensely self-assured. He has a thing for interacting and manipulating people (too many people to count, noticeable examples are Albus lol, Aurelius and Queenie), heās anything but uncomfortable in a crowd (literally bathing in crowd), even when heās less than presentable (Candidateās Dinner) and he also has a talent for speaking his mind no matter how itās perceived (You think youāll be able to contain me?!)
Plus, he believes wizardkind to be special and him to be the most special among them (along with Albus, everyone else is third-class). So I think he never hid what he was and if ANY INSTITUTION attempted to use it against him, heād just sneer and debate them into the ground. āUnnatural? Perverted? Please enlighten me to the pure nature of humanity ā which has just slaughtered itself in a goddamn world war ā and then we can talk. :/ā I feel like, to him, itās just what he is and heās so above normal folk that he couldnāt care less about their comments. He knows heās right, just like heās right about the Greater Good, so donāt care if you* disagree with him.
*Unless youāre Albus Dumbledore, THEN your opinion actually matters and what do you mean you donāt agree you married me you big meanie! :(
Therefore, I also donāt think heād tone down anything about his behavior. In fact, publicity seems to tease out his more diva-like behaviour (the aforementioned bath in the crowd, his tendency to fall theatrically whenever he needs to make an impressive exitā¦)
Plus, last but not leastā¦HE spoke the sentence āWho will love you now, Albus?ā out loud. In front of a huge crowd. Potentially even in front of these ātelevision sheetsā or whatever they were. Gellert seems to be very public with his affection.Ā
Yes I agree.
I do think it does bother him like in āwow why does humanity care about this and not more important things like magic.ā And it fuels his hate for muggles a little in a āwoah these people are so small minded š”ā way.
But yeah I donāt think heād ever have initialised homophobia as an adult.
Now what about teenage Gellert? Durmstrang Gellert? Does he feel differently.
Ah, we know so little about teenage Gellert and I admit to knowing very little about the period that he lived in (the Oscar Wilde trials are a prominent topic within the Grindeldore fandom, but they happened in London and way before Grindelwald had been forced to flee).Ā
What we know, from Harryās (Harry - totally not bicurious - Potter) comments is that Grindelwald was a handsome teenager. So he was probably used to affectionā¦from all sides. Physical affection, I say, because teenage Grindelwald was also already a prodigy and had very much a mind of his own, that didnāt even falter when he was expelled from Durmstrang. If the answer Albus wrote to him regarding this expulsion is any indication, then Gellert himself might have considered this a failure of himself ā hence Albus explaining to him āwhatā his mistake at Durmstrang was, but he never tried to appeal to Durmstrang and return, so one can conclude that heād cut this tie off.Ā
Anyway, what I was going to say isā¦Gellert probably had suitors and maybe even had suitors of the same gender, and he had likely found a way to deal with that mentally. Maybe he himself was even sort of bi-curious during these years - we might never know, lol - and maybe his thought process was like: āSo many people find me handsome and want to snog me, the only way this is unnatural is how unnaturally handsome I amā (*flicks blond hair, somewhere, Albus dies*)Ā
I do think that he might have been more snippy at homophobic comments (āYouāre just jealous I get all the gals and guys!ā) but he wouldnāt have let that affect his self-esteem, given that he was already aware he was talented above them all.
(hence why I think, when he first met Albus, he was neither impressed with him AT THE VERY FIRST nor was he surprised when Albus developed a crush on him. Albus fell first, Gellert fell harder, I guess.)Ā
Disclaimer: All of this is my headcanon, of course. :DĀ
albus dumbledore and gellert grindelwald flirted through reciting the picture of dorian gray (in summer 1899) canon. i know it.
1899 grindeldore:
Forbidden romance, Oscar Wilde books, hot summers, scandalous letters, the smell of sweets, kissing in fields, deep love.
Fantastic beasts grindeldore:
Angry and regretful lust, secret hotel room meetings, political arguments, icy cold winters, suits, passive aggressive letters, angry love bites, complicated love.
Afterlife grindeldore:
Remorse and understanding, reconnecting love, tears and hugs, starting again, apologies, everlasting love.
You know whatās extra heartbreaking about the restaurant scene is the fact that Gellert didnāt even know what he was there for. Albus just sent him an invite and he immediately jumped on it and showed up smiling and the first thing Albus does is suggest they get divorced. And Gellert sighs and gets real quiet and then burns down the restaurant.
"What ensues is both stark and sensual, with Law especially magnificent. Albus has been intoxicated since his youth by Gellert. We discover that they almost eloped. And weāre invited to feel the heat that still exists between the two men. Albus closes his eyes, giddy with anticipation, at the mere thought of his ex-lover.
Even in 2022, this feels revolutionary. In FB3 the top goodie is gay. Woohoo!"
